At Cima di Gagnone ultramafic rocks form elongated lens-shaped bodies tens to hundreds of meters in size. They are enclosed within semi-pelitic and quartzo-feldspathic gneiss. Two main types of ultramafic rocks are described; garnet peridotite and chlorite harzburgite. They represent an eclogite facies breakdown of hydrated peridotites (serpentinites). Scambelluri et al. (2014) suggest that the hydration is a result of exposure to both seawater (pre-subduction) and water from crustal reservoirs (metasediments) during subduction.

The chlorite harzburgite contains a peak-condition mineral assemblage of olivine (67%,) orthopyroxene (25%), chlorite (5%), F-bearing Ti-hydroxylclinohumite (3%), whereas the garnet peridotite contains olivine, orthopyroxene, magnesio-hornblende, garnet, clinopyroxene and ilmenite. Titanian hydroxylclinohumite occurs in both rock types but are most common in the chlorite harzburgite. In the garnet peridotite, hydroxylclinohumite is normally broken down to olivine + ilmenite during the retrograde phase.

Detailed Mineral List:

ⓘ 'Almandine-Pyrope Series'
ⓘ Cummingtonite
Formula: ◻{Mg2}{Mg5}(Si8O22)(OH)2
ⓘ Diopside
Formula: CaMgSi2O6
ⓘ Diopside var. Chromium-bearing Diopside
Formula: Ca(Mg,Cr)Si2O6
ⓘ Enstatite
Formula: Mg2Si2O6
ⓘ Forsterite
Formula: Mg2SiO4
ⓘ 'Humite Group'
Description: Investigations of "olivine" by TEM revealed humite-type layers Mg(OH,F)2 as lattice planar faults in the olivine structure. The degree of ordering of these humite type layers was not given in the reference.
ⓘ Hydroxylclinohumite
Formula: Mg9(SiO4)4(OH)2
Description: Titanian hydroxylclinohumite occurs predominantly in the central parts of olivine megacrysts. Olivine and hydroxylclinohumite are intergrown and forms irregular polysynthetic twins and cannot readily be distinguished. The hydroxylclinohumite contains up to .318 apfu Ti, and appreciable amounts of F (up to 2.12 wt %), yet still well within the chemical boundaries of hydroxylclinohumite.
ⓘ Ilmenite
Formula: Fe2+TiO3
