Name(s) in local language(s):
Mina da Batalha
Gem mine 4.5 km NE of the town of Salgadinho.
Known for "Paraiba tourmaline" (cuprian elbaite), discovered here in 1982.
6 parallel tabular pegmatites with a thickness varying from 20 cm to 4 m.
In the past, this was a tantalite-(Mn) mine, which likely supplied material for World War II, and the mine operated illegally for years, and the name "Batalha mine" came in reference to its location, which is on a hill called Batalha.
In the late 1980s, the miner Heitor Dimas Barbosa made the first major discovery of previously unseen green and neon-blue tourmalines, giving rise to Heitorita Mining, the type locality. This mine is located within the Borborema pegmatitic province (SCORZA, 1944).
The name "heitorita" was given to these tourmalines, but was later changed to "Paraíba tourmaline". However, "heitorita" is still the commercial name used to refer to the copper-bearing elbaite from this mine, which is among the most expensive and coveted in the world due to its unmistakable color.
