A former Au-Zn-Ag-Pb-Cu mine located in sec. 35, T43N, R8W, NMM, 0.3 km (0.2 mile) S of Camp Bird (town) and 2.7 km (1.7 miles) NW of Hayden Mountain (Hayden Mountain South) (coordinates of record), about 6 miles South of Ouray, on private (patented) land within a National Forest. Discovered by Thomas F. Walsh in 1896. Owned by the Federal Resources Corp. (100.00%), Utah (1992). Operated 1900 to 1990. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.
NOTE: The Yale Peabody GNIS database provides three sets of coordinates for this mine based on the levels that have tunnels exiting the mountain plus a set of coordinates for the populated place (town). NOTE: The USGS MRDS database provides 2 additional file numbered as relevent to this mine. In fact, they pertain to another Camp Bird Mine in another county.
Mineralization is a polymetallic replacement deposit. The main ore body is the Camp Bird vein, with replacement ore bodies on three other veins. The ore body strikes E00W and dips 70S at a thickness of 2.5 meters, a depth-to-top of 300 meters, a width of 380 meters, and a length of 2,000 meters. It is a tabular, fissure vein replacement body. The primary mode of origin is hydrothermal. Secondary mode was lithology. Wallrock alteration is moderate (propylitic, intermediate argillic and advanced argillic). Local rocks include pre-ash-flow andesitic lavas, breccias, tuffs, and conglomerates.
Workings include extensive underground openings with a length of 7,200 meters and an overall depth of 248 meters.
Production information: Produced about 1.5 million Troy ounces of Au to 1990. Also produced 4 million Troy ounces of Ag.
Reserves and resources data: Type: In-situ; Estimate year: 1980; demonstrated 77,095 metric tons of ore; measured 77,095 metric tons of ore; total resources: 77,095 metric tons of ore. Ag: 133.000000 grams/metric ton (1980); Au 3.200000 grams/metric ton (1980).
