This quarry, located to the West of the Franklin Pond dam, on the West side of Cork Hill Road, and not far from the old iron furnace on Franklin Pond, was used to provide limestone flux for the iron furnace. This locality is within the Franklin Mining District. The complete list of mineral species occurring within this district, as well as the official boundaries of the district, can be found under the locality file for "Franklin Mining District."
Also known as the Franklin Furnace Quarry, the Hill Mine, and the Hill Vein Mine. Located in contact with gneiss. Opened before 1868. Worked extensively in 1879 and 1880. Closed in 1882. Sometimes lumped together with the Pike's Peak mine located in Franklin Marble.
NOTE: Old specimens labeled as coming from "Franklin Furnace" are from Franklin before 1913, when the name of the town was changed from "Franklin Furnace" to "Franklin." The name "Franklin Furnace" was sometimes informally used on labels written after 1913 and the name is not a reliable way to date the labeling of the specimen.
