Kaveltorpsfältet (Kaveltorps gruvor), Ljusnarsbergs kommun, Örebro län, Sverige

Skarn between dolomite-ophicalcite and metavolcanics-cordierite gedrite quartzite.

The Kaveltorp Mines (Swedish: Kaveltorpsfältet) are located in Ljusnarsberg parish (& municipality), just south of the town of Kopparberg and roughly 500 m south of Nya Kopparberg. They were discovered in 1849 by Erik Elzwik. However, production only started in 1857 due to lack of funds. Copper was the primary object, but also lead, silver and later zinc were of importance. The mines were finally closed around 1970.
Production until 1905: 3,505 t of Cu, 4,870 kg of Ag, 8,442 t of Pb and 38 kg of Au (Tegengren, 1924).

The following mines exist:
Alexandergruvan, Åkergruvan, Äng-gruvan, Auroragruvan, Björkgruvan, Elzviksgruvan, Erikagruvan I, Erikagruvan II, Eriksgruvan, Fransgruvan, Fredriksgruvan, Guldgruvan, Gustafsgruvan, Hag-gruvan, Haraldsgruvan (the oldest mine in the area), Juliagruvan, Katarinagruvan, Mariagruvan, Nya Äng-gruvan, Rostgruvan, Smedsgruvan, Trekantgruvan, Väg-gruvan, Varpgruvan, and Vaskgruvan.

NOTE: in the collection at Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet (NRM) Stockholm, there are about 180 chondrodites listed from Kaveltorp. Five more from Nya Kopparberg, but 3 of them originate from the dealer W. Anderberg, who is known to have mixed the two places (pers. comm). Flink, in his great work “Bidrag till Sveriges Mineralogi”, lists ONLY Kaveltorp for chondrodite (group) and fresh, clear crystals up to 5 cm.

Formula: CuFeS2
ⓘ Chondrodite
Formula: Mg5(SiO4)2F2
Description: Chondrodite was (and is) commonly found in skarns together with the sulfide minerals, as well-formed, fresh crystals up to 5 cm. The largest, brown-red to dark brown crystals were found associated with chalcopyrite. Smaller, lighter crystals were found with galena.

Formula: CuFe2S3
Description: First described as a new mineral, "Chalmerite" but later development in mineralogy identified it as the same mineral as Cubanite. Later testing on new material in 1924 confirmed that cubanite was present at the site. Exactly which mine in Kaveltorp Ore Field the samples were collected in is not revealed in the article by Per Geijer.
