Although it was the discovery of silver-lead ore, in 1849, which began interest I this mine. In history the mine became better known for copper, after a block of malachite weighing approx 1 ton, taken from the mine was displayed in Adelaide, sometime during 1858.
The original lease was held by the Chambers Brothers, who (it is believed) held the mine until just prior to or until 1868. The mine name was changed to Ben Lomond in 1868, by the Ben Lomond Mining Co. and worked until 1870. One final record shows the Coromandel Syndicate began mining here in 1888. However, by 1908, the mine had been abandoned for several years.
Very little in the way of production records exist for this mine.
A young boy became trapped at the bottom of a shaft after he and his friends crawled into one of the adits, during the 1980’s. As a result, the adits and shafts of this mine are now back-filled.
The main part of the property is now a housing estate, thus very little evidence of this mine remains.
