From the greek μαλακός (malakos=soft) because the mineral is softer than ordinary zircon (Scheerer, Annalen der Physik 1844, p. 436).
Malacon is an altered hydrated zircon with curved, rounded crystals. An alternative spelling is "Malakon" (German).
