Azalea Cluster 1 RF-1 [BAe]
Azalea is a low Earth orbit, cluster-based, multi-sensor satellite constellation developed by BAE Systems (United Kingdom). The system is designed to collect radio frequency (RF), synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and complementary sensor data, process it on orbit, and deliver near-real-time intelligence products to users worldwide.
The mission objective of Azalea is to provide integrated Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) through the combined collection and analysis of wideband RF emissions and Earth observation data. By synchronising satellites within a cluster using intersatellite communications, the system enables precise RF signal geolocation alongside contextual scene information derived from SAR and other sensors. On-board processing allows activities of interest to be identified in orbit, reducing latency between collection and delivery.
The system architecture is coordinated by the Azalea Hub, which performs mission planning, tasking, and command and control across the constellation. The hub also allows integration of partner-owned assets, including SAR and electro-optical satellites, and ingestion of commercial data feeds. Centralised data management and analytics are applied to generate enriched information products for operational use.
At the payload level, the constellation is centred on the BAE Systems Azalea Enhanced Software Defined Radio (SDR) and data processor. Using multiple antennas and radio head units, the Enhanced SDR supports space-to-ground and intersatellite links, wide-area RF monitoring, and signal detection and geolocation. Local processing resources interface with imaging payloads, including SAR systems supplied by ICEYE (Finland), as well as on-board data storage, enabling a tightly integrated multi-sensor capability.
Azalea satellites are designed for in-orbit reconfiguration, allowing payload functions and processing applications to be updated during the mission lifetime. The open architecture supports interoperability with additional sensor types, including electro-optical, hyperspectral, and infrared payloads, as well as potential integration with allied satellite programmes.
Azalea Cluster 1 consists of three Azalea Cluster 1 RF-1, 2, 3 RF satellites and one ICEYE-X SAR satellite. All four satellites were launched together on the SpaceX Falcon-9 v1.2 (Block 5) Transporter-15 missions.
