Get Backers: untitled (Juubei/Kazuki)
Apr. 12th, 2006 05:32 pmOriginally written for one of the prompts for the second
fornicari challenge, but I wandered a bit, and there's not even vague smut. Because Juubei isn't pathetically easy.
(I mourn for my lost ability to provide *titles,* even if they were bad ones).
Kazuki left, and Juubei was left behind. Juubei might have followed his heart, and Kazuki. He did not, because Kazuki had made his choice, and Juubei had already given up much for him. Kazuki left Juubei his wounded pride, his confusion, and hurt, and fury. Kazuki had left, and Juubei had not--and now, Kazuki stands before him, hand outstretched.
Kazuki had gone into the world, and he comes to Juubei now, changed by experiences Juubei can not know. Juubei wonders if, beyond the Limitless Fortress, someone sorrows for Kazuki as Juubei once had. It is a thought unworthy of them, and all that they have shared, but: Kazuki is beautiful, and kind, and perhaps he does not love Juubei so deeply as Juubei loves him.
And yet: Kazukiâs hand rests against Juubeiâs chest, above his heart. He remembers the feel of Kazukiâs touch, here, everywhere--and he has missed this, missed Kazuki. Kazukiâs lips brush his, briefly, and his breath is hot against Juubeiâs skin: âIâve missed you, Juubei. Iâve missed you terribly.â He leans forward, and Juubeiâs arms curl around him, finely-honed instinct.
Kazuki had left--had left *Juubei*--but he is here now, and his body is hot, and hard, and everything and nothing like Juubei remembers. Juubei hesitates only a moment before brushing his fingertips across Kazukiâs jawline, the pad of his thumb across the swell of his lower lip. He does not kiss Kazuki.
Perhaps now is his time to *lead.*
âNot yet,â Juubei says.

Date: 2006-04-15 06:00 pm (UTC)Something that occurred to me while I was reading this fic (and should have occurred to me earlier) was, why on earth didn't Kazuki go back for him? I mean, once it was established that Ginji wasn't coming back and Kazuki began to make a life for himself outside, why didn't he bring Juubei and Sakura out? Why does it take the IL to send him back? Or am I not supposed to ask those kind of questions ...

Date: 2006-04-15 09:03 pm (UTC)The most logical explanation I could think of whas that Juubei stayed behind voluntarily - that is, Kazuki asked him to leave with him, and he refused - and somehow I seriously can't see Juubei doing that.
It's also possible that for whatever reason Kazuki way overestimated the Black Thread's vindictiveness and figured as soon as he was outside Mugenjou he was a walking dead man, and didn't want to drag Juubei into it. And by the time he realized he was wrong, he thought it was too late to go back. But that's reaching. Waaay reaching.
More fanficcers need to adress these questions! That is what fanfic is for! (hint hint) ^_^
(And there's also the question - even if Kazuki didn't come back, why the hell didn't Juubei go after him? He's capable of leaving Mugenjou! Or was he already so devoted to Makubex by then that he wasn't willing to leave by the time it became obvious Kazuki wasn't coming back? Which is what I'm inclined to think.)

Date: 2006-04-16 08:31 am (UTC)Well, in the anime, Kazuki definitely says that he left without saying goodbye - so either Juubei knew it was coming but didn't know when, or Kazuki just disappeared.
And if he just disappeared, why wasn't Juubei looking for him? Wouldn't the most obvious explanation be that he'd been taken?
Yeah, by the time it was obvious Kazuki wasn't coming back, it probably would have seemed like a crime to leave Makubex without one of his kings. The kid has enough abandonment issues already ...
