So I've been sort of absent from LJ/DW. Only sort of, because I'm still reading my flists and making the occasional comment here and there, but yeah. It's been awhile since I've made an actual post. I've been mostly on Twitter & Tumblr, where posting feels like less of an... event, I guess. Not that I still don't love LJ & DW and wish they were busier, but it is what it is.
So what's up with me? This weekend I was not feeling up to driving 30 miles to the only local theater carrying Veronica Mars, so I opted to watch at home. Although I had that Flixter free download code, I couldn't get there in any browser and I wanted to watch it on my AppleTV anyway, so I bought it (and yes, I have heard that the WB is refunding people who paid because they couldn't access Flixster, but I can't be bothered). What did I think? It was a very enjoyable double-long episode! I haven't rewatched the actual episodes in a very long time (and have no intention of ever rewatching S3), so my memory was really hazy on a lot of the tertiary characters I was pretty sure I was supposed to know, but I thoroughly enjoyed it anyway. The only thing that really threw me out for a bit was Logan in a naval uniform. I- really? I'm glad to see that other people were side-eying that. I was so surprised I totally missed the fighter pilot explanation, too, which is even more ridiculous. As someone else said, I can't see Logan's smart mouth letting him get through officer training, let alone anything else. But for all that it was super-enjoyable and I'm glad I helped with the Kickstarter.
I also recently marathoned nearly all of Season 1 of Hannibal (with the exception of 1x10, which I bailed on less than 5 minutes in) and am currently caught up on Season 2. So here's the thing. I mostly have kept away from serial killer shows, even ones that are theoretically focused on the good guys trying to catch the serial killer, because it has always felt ... wrong to watch it somehow. This started with Profiler with Ally Walker (wow, over a decade ago) and has continued through Criminal Minds and Dexter, although I watched a great deal of CM before I decided I was kind of over it. Hannibal, for all that it's one of the (if not the)goriest shows I've ever watched in my life, is different.
serrico put her finger on the reason why a week ago or so: respect. This show doesn't forget that murder is a terrible thing that is done to people, or that Hannibal is really freaking evil. So, yeah. That's how I've made it through the show I thought I'd never watch. Although I still will never actually watch it live. I need my fastforward button for this show. :-)
And finally, thanks to various people gushing about the show (including
killabeez, who was the one who finally shoved me over), I watched 7 episodes of the BBC's new version of The Musketeers, and just finished watching episode 8 earlier tonight. I like this show. I was going to say it was Merlin-esque, and it is a bit, but at the moment I think it's being handled a bit better than Merlin ever was, as much as I loved Merlin. Actually, I think one of the things I like best about it is Peter Capaldi's Cardinal Richelieu. While no one will ever say that this Cardinal Richelieu is a good guy, unlike some of the movie versions of The Musketeers that I've seen, he is not cartoonishly evil. (Please note that my first experience with the Musketeers was with the 1993 version with Chris O'Donnell and Tim Curry as the Cardinal; now that's a cartoon. One I enjoyed very much at the time, but.) And he's demonstrated to be a pretty good chief minister who'd probably be even better if he wasn't grasping for power so much.
Which isn't to say I'm not also thoroughly enjoying the Musketeers themselves, even D'Artagnan, who I was a little bored with in the first episode. I've come to appreciate him more, though I did still want to smack him around in yesterday's episode. But he's young and stupid, what can you expect? And of course pretty pretty Athos has manpain, and Aramis and Porthos are just awesome. And the women in this show are actually really great, too. I'm really enjoying Constance, and Queen Anne, and Milady de Winter, and the single episode character Ninon De Larroque in 1x06 was pretty great, too (I wouldn't mind if she came back). So, yeah. New fandom, I guess. :-)
Finally, I'm hoping I will get some sleep tonight, as I have an informational interview first thing tomorrow with someone for a possible new job in a different department at work. It would be pretty different from what I'm doing now and I'm not sure I want to change jobs, as I really like the people I'm working with now, and my boss is awesome, but I've been doing it for 6 years come the end of next week, and... I don't know. It's definitely time for something to change, I'm just not sure it's my job. So if you would, please think of me and send your best wishes and/or prayers for good judgment.
