beck_liz: Kitten stuck in a toilet: Woe (Woe by Cluegirl)
Decided to take the opportunity to use the cute woeful kitten icon on this, because I haven't used it in awhile and both I and my cat are kind of woeful.

I have had workers in my home 5 of the last 7 days, and they're due to come again on Thursday, and then more yet to be determined. The things they are doing have required me to keep my cat Nova contained while they're present, and we have not enjoyed having her freedom of house restricted.

( Cutting for exciting (hah) details of home repair )

On top of the above fun times, work has been stressful the last few months as well. ( Cut for details )

In the middle of all that work stuff, my Mom had major surgery that stressed us all out. She's absolutely fine, and was only in the hospital about 24 hours, but it was to clean a blockage in her carotid artery, so I call that pretty major no matter what. I traveled to be with my parents for a long weekend, and my dad and I wandered around the hospital for awhile because there was some bureaucratic confusion about where her room was going to be for the post-surgery recovery, and we went back and forth and all around and basically got our steps in for the day. But she was able to go home for lunch the next day.

So, yeah. Infodump city up there, and most of it not great. Things could be worse, though - I still have a job, and a home, and the repairs being done to me home won't bankrupt me. So... happy 2024, I guess? It can only go up from here? I hope?
beck_liz: Wei Wuxian & Lan Wangji from the Untamed back-to-back (Untamed-Wangxian)
As per usual, it's been awhile since I've posted here. There's just something about this big white posting box that makes me feel like I need to fill it up, even if I don't really have all that much to say.

However, as Twitter (not whatever That Guy insists on calling it) keeps declining, I've kind of moved over onto Blue Sky, over here. I do have 3 invite codes available over there should anyone want one, just let me know in the comments.

I am still somewhat on Twitter since people are still there, but mostly just posting the occasional cat pic and RTing things occasionally. I've been fortunate enough to miss most of the unpleasantness due to my longstanding habit of keeping strictly to Lists, so I don't ever attempt to use the Following tab, which I find utterly useless (and also filled with junk, ads and other terrible things, of course). You still get ads in lists, but only in the comments, not in the actual list, so it's a little nicer, and I don't see anything from anyone not in the list unless a list member has RTd it.

And I've had this open for an hour debating on whether to add anything else, so I think I won't so I actually post something. :-)

ETA: I just posted this and looked at the previous post which was in December of last year, and I said "Keep Warm!" because it was bitterly cold then. And today, of course, many of us are sweltering with 100+ degree heat indices, so... stay cool, I guess!

Stay warm!

beck_liz: Lord of the Rings: Samwise the Brave (Samwise the Brave by Elz)
I hope you all are staying warm, and (if you're reading this) I assume your power is on, but hopefully it stays on! In Northern Indiana this week visiting my parents, and woke up to it being -7F outside (windchill -30 something something as the wind whistles past my window), and at least 10 degrees colder in my bedroom than when I went to sleep last night. Fortunately not cold enough that just keeping all of my extremities under the covers wasn't enough to keep me warm, but it's definitely chillier in here than I'd like. Today's definitely a fuzzy socks and slippers day.

I drove here, and am not planning on driving back until Monday, when hopefully things will be clearing up and it will be (slowly) getting warmer again, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit concerned over what the roads will still be like by then. We'll see how that goes.

Anyway, I hope you're all safe and warm, and that if the upcoming holiday is one you celebrate, that you're able to do so the way you want and aren't having any travel woes!

Hiya!

I am here, and I have been here reading ye olde flist and posting the occasional comment, but I am terrible about making actual posts. But with That Guy seemingly determined to blow up Twitter, I am very glad to still have a place here, and glad to see a bunch of you back here again. Not planning on leaving Twitter unless I'm forced to, but we'll see how that goes. I am beck_liz or beck-liz in most places - Tumblr, Instagram, Cohost, Counter.Social, Pillowfort, and am beck_liz#2161 on Discord. Only really using Tumblr, Instagram & Discord, the others are all for name squatting. I do, it turns out, also have a Mastodon account that I apparently grabbed back when Tumblr was having its issues 5 years ago, but I'm dubious of using it at all. Honestly, I'm dubious of all of them aside from Tumblr & Discord. (Instagram I still haven't figured out how to use aside from adding people and scrolling through the timeline.)

Am at my parents' this week for the holiday. My GPS app routed me off the PA Turnpike Friday afternoon to cut between exits due to some sort of slowdown, but did not take into account the fact that there was a snow squall in progress on that road, or that the road was of the hilly and curvy variety. Suffice to say it took much longer than anticipated, and there was much cursing and gripping of the wheel as I inched along the slick road. But I made it to my hotel that night safe, and made it to my parents' in time for lunch yesterday. Which is good, because they got another ~4 inches overnight and my car is now covered. Fortunately, it'll "heat up" into the 40s starting tomorrow, so things should melt pretty well before I leave again.
beck_liz: Wei Wuxian & Lan Wangji from the Untamed back-to-back (Untamed-Wangxian)
I'm still here, even though it's been *checks* almost 2 years since I've last posted. And I almost regret checking, since my last post was a very sad post about my cat dying.

But anyway, I'm doing pretty well. I have a new cat, Nova, who I adopted a few weeks after my last post. Here she is:
Nova Portrait View

She really helped me get past losing my previous cat. She's a sweet, affectionate girl, though her energy levels did take some getting used to, as of course Miss Bean was mostly sleeping through her last few months with me, and Nova has a lot more zoom in her.

Still mostly over on Twitter, though I have gotten more into Discord in the last 2 years, though I could never consider Discord a replacement for Twitter or Dreamwidth or Tumblr, but as a supplement to them. I like Discord a lot, but as someone on Twitter said, it has a major discoverability problem, as you can only access things you have links/invites for. Which is good for things you want kept locked down, but less good if you actually want people to find you. Posting here now mostly because of *cough* recent news about Twitter and realizing I should probably make sure people know I'm still reading my flist here, even if I haven't been posting more than the occasional comment. Plus, I don't know, I already had trouble writing anything that felt worth a post on here before Twitter, and now that I'm used to short news bursts on Twitter, it's even harder. But I'm still here, and I'll try to post at least a little bit more in the future.

Anyway, if you're looking for me, all my various social media links are in my profile, though the main ones I use are Twitter, Tumblr and Discord, and occasionally Instagram (though again, I rarely post there).
beck_liz: My cat, Miss Bean, staring out the window (Cat-MissBeanWindow)
Those of you who follow me on Twitter know this already, but my cat Miss Bean was put to sleep on Thursday. I miss her a lot. I'd been pilling her for about 18 months for Lymphoma, and she'd been doing very well, but went downhill rather rapidly in the last couple of weeks. The vet said that's normal for Lymphoma in cats - the pills work very well... until they don't.

Fuck cancer, seriously.

Tuesday and Wednesday of this week she spent most of her time under my bed, which previously she mostly only would go to stay if she was feeling sick or scared. She spent a lot of her first few weeks with me under that bed, so I knew her spending all day under it was a bad sign indeed. When I took her to the vet on Wednesday, he told me she had a large growth and that I should consider euthanization. There was a drug that could have kept her alive for another couple of months, but it would have just meant prolonging the inevitable and keeping her in more pain. So I took her home one last time Wednesday evening, and she got one last nap in the late afternoon sun. And then I hung out in my bedroom with her most of Thursday (my boss was kind enough to allow me to take time off that day and yesterday), and then I took her and said goodbye.

I've had her since 2014, and she's been a great comfort to me during the pandemic. I told my Mom that she was a great "starter cat", as she was so polite and gentle. I needed that, as I'd never been responsible for a cat on my own before. (Which isn't to say she couldn't be curious and get into trouble.) We had a cat when I was growing up, but though she was meant to be mine when we got her when I was 8, she ended up more my Mom's cat, as I couldn't stop bugging the poor thing and of course Mom was the one who fed her. She lived for 23 years, and that was the baseline I had for cat longevity. So I definitely wasn't expecting only six years, but they were a good six years, and Miss Bean was very, very loved during that time.

I do intend to get another cat, or possibly 2 if I can find a pair together, probably sooner rather than later as I think it'll help to have something else to focus on. But not quite yet. I'm still crying even now. (Any suggestions/recommendations on getting a shelter cat, and especially 2 at once, is appreciated.)

In closing, I'm going to post a bunch of pictures of Miss Bean to celebrate her life. Farewell, my darling girl. I will always miss you.

Hi all! Been forever since I posted here, and this will of necessity be a quick update as I've got to go to work soon. Mostly on Twitter at [x.com profile] beck_liz, also on Tumblr at [tumblr.com profile] beck-liz. Also a bit on Discord, and just namesquatted over on Pillowfort at https://www.pillowfort.io/beck_liz. Anyone else namesquatting there? Any active communities anyone knows of?

Anyway, I'm keeping an eye on dear Florence. She is extremely unlikely to hit us directly, but could sideswipe us with the "more dangerous" side with all the tornadoes, and we're definitely going to get a ton of rain out of her. (Californians, you want any?) I'm relatively safe for where I am here in SE Virginia within 20 miles of the Atlantic Ocean, but I'm surrounded by areas that are much less safe, so who knows if I'll need to evacuate.

Doing pretty well, otherwise. Went to both [community profile] con_txt and [community profile] vividcon earlier this summer, and maybe I'll get around to posting about it at some point. Or not. I'm planning on going to [community profile] confabcon, and considering going to [community profile] fanworks next year which is run by some of the same people as those who ran [community profile] vividcon.

Anyway, that's all I have time for right now. Hope everyone's doing well!

Going to try giving this long-form posting thing a try again. We'll see if I actually click the button on this. :-)

This morning, I opted to sneak downstairs and grab breakfast and return to my room with it shortly after waking up instead of waiting until I'm actually ready for the day. This has the benefit of me not ending up starving and with low blood sugar by the time I'm ready to hit the door. :-D So I thought I'd take this extra time I've given myself and post a bit about VividCon.

All in all, a really great time so far. Looking forward to day 2. Club Vivid tonight!

Heading to VividCon this week! Other VividCon attendees and Chicago folks, I'm getting into O'Hare around 11:30 CT Thursday morning, if anyone's interested in lunch or dinner that day.

Not around here as much as I used to be, so probably the best way to get in touch (particularly starting Thursday through VividCon) will be through my twitter. My user name there is the same as here. Hope to see some of you soon!

I keep forgetting to post here anymore. I am at Escapade, should anyone else at Escapade want to meet up. I will be here through dinner Sunday evening (have a red-eye flight Sunday night).
beck_liz: Peggy Carter in her red hat (Agent Carter red hat by such_heights)
...sort of. I've been bad about posting for awhile now, but I used to still at least regularly keep up with people's posts and leave the occasional comment. Just lately, about the only social media I've been able to keep up with has been Twitter, though a lot of that has to do with the recent political unpleasantness about to be inflicted upon the US. Ahem. The rest of it has to do with the fact that my main two fandoms lately have been 1. hockey, and 2. Dragon Age (the video game series), which have kept me mostly on Twitter or AO3 and occasionally on Tumblr. Or off social media altogether as I play one of the Dragon Age games. :-)

Regarding the recent news (from a week or so ago) of LJ moving its servers entirely to Russia...eh. I bought a permanent account ages ago, and I have no intention of giving them any further money. Unless things start looking even worse, I don't see the point of deleting. My LJ will remain locked, though.

I'm doing well otherwise. I'm trying to decide whether to go to Escapade this year. I enjoyed last year very much and I'd love to go again. My main issue is the fact that I'm on the East Coast and my introverted self finds getting through the airport and spending that long trapped on a plane with a bunch of strangers extremely frustrating. Especially since there aren't any direct flights from here to LAX anymore. Plus there's the additional time I'd have to take off from work to allow for all that travel. So I don't know yet. Who else is going?
beck_liz: Bamboo Yellow Flowers (Default)
[personal profile] norwich36 was kind enough to give me an invite to Imzy so I can name squat there, and now I have 5 invites myself in case anyone else wants one. I have no idea what if anything I'll do over there, but just in case. :-)

I'll be traveling today, so if anyone comments I might not get to it until later this evening.

ETA: Should anyone else be interested, I have 3 invites left, but I forgot to mention earlier that I'll need your email address to send it to.

As usual, haven't posted here in forever (mostly Tweeting these days), but wanted to throw up a quick note that I'm headed to VividCon this afternoon. Especially since I forgot to throw up a note that I was going to Con.Txt two weeks ago. :-)

I hope to be there by about 2 PM CT as I want to try to watch the livestream of the Women's Gymnastics Individual All-Around competition this afternoon so I'm not dependent on NBC's on-TV broadcast tonight. If anyone's around this afternoon and wants to watch too, let me know!

In any case, quite looking forward to seeing everyone at the con. I hope everyone going has very safe travels.

Well, after not-posting in forever, I seem to have a few thoughts about last night's Sleepy Hollow season 3 finale. Spoilers, of course. ( Warning: I am not a happy camper. If you liked last night's episode, you should not click. )
beck_liz: Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back: Han Solo/Leia Organa (SWESB - Han/Leia by syliasyliasylia)
OK, so originally I didn't think I was going to be able to see the movie until sometime next week. Because my flights home to visit my parents for Christmas were scheduled for the night the movie opened on the 17th, I wasn't going to have a car while with them, and they don't really do movie theaters. However, United Airlines inexplicably canceling my Thursday evening flights due to "air traffic control complications", whatever that means, and automatically rescheduled me to fly out on Friday instead. So I decided to take the opportunity to see it on opening night, and I am SO glad I did. The first show at 7 was sold out, but there was a non-3D one at 7:45, and I wanted non-3D anyway, so that made me happy. I did finally make it to my parents', but I should have just canceled the 2nd leg of the flight and rented a car at O'Hare instead of at my destination airport, as I could've driven from O'Hare to my parents house before my second flight's scheduled departure time, and it did not leave on time. Anyway, just needed to rant a bit about my travels. On to the movie. ( Spoilers )

I had the thought while I was traveling on Friday that this movie feels very much as if it was made by a major fan who adored the original trilogy but also recognized the problems in them and in the prequels, and others have said it's like an AU or remix fanfic. I think this is all correct. This is a great movie, and if you haven't gone yet, try not to let yourself get spoiled before you do. It's worth it. And I want to see the movie more times in the theater, so I'm hoping I get to do so next week. Oh, one other thing to know about the movie is that there is no post-credits scene. I thought there was for a split second, but it was just the Bad Robot production logo.

So because I'm nervous of spoiling anyone on Twitter even while using the Agents of Shield tag, I'm bringing it over here where I can freaking cut tag stuff. Spoilers for the episode airing tonight in the USA, 3x09 "Closure". ( Cut for spoilers... and language )

When does Agent Carter start, again?
beck_liz: Wonder Woman (Wonder Woman)
So... I haven't updated my icons in forever, so hopefully Jessica Jones won't mind me using a Wonder Woman icon instead. I marathoned Jessica Jones in 24 hours this weekend. I watched about 5 hours on Friday before I had to take a break, and did the last 8 on Saturday. Before the spoiler cut, I will say this. Trigger warnings for everything, people. All kinds of really terrible things happen or have happened to people in this show, and there was a point probably somewhere around episode 7 or 8 where I was considering just stopping watching entirely or at least going to find spoilers for the rest, because on top of the triggery stuff, this show is DARK. I am glad I pushed through in the end, though. Spoilers for the rest behind this cut: ( Read more... )

Hey all! I’m headed to VividCon this weekend and ConneXions next weekend. I’ll hopefully (United providing) be landing in Chicago about 6 and hopefully be at the hotel between then and 7 in case anyone wants to have dinner, though I probably won’t want to go further than the steak place right there. :-) I will be staying through Monday morning, so if anyone wants to have lunch or get together, let me know! Also, I’m hoping to be able to watch the last Daily Show with Jon Stewart *sniff* tomorrow night at 11 (or I guess 10 Central time?), so if anyone wants to join me, let me know. Wish me luck as I’m flying United to O’Hare and back, and I didn’t have much luck with that the last time I did it in February (I returned home a day later than intended).

For ConneXions, I’m not quite sure yet when I’m going to get there. I can’t afford to take any time off next week, but since it’s starting in the mid-afternoon on Friday I might be able to make something work. I definitely plan on being there all day on Saturday. Not sure if I’ll stick around for any panels on Sunday or just go ahead and drive home. Having both of these back-to-back means I might be pushing the levels on my social activity meter, so we’ll see. Still, I would like to see anyone who’s going to be there, so let me know if you will be!

Probably the best way to reach me after tomorrow afternoon is via Twitter @beck_liz.

I mostly enjoyed it. Not as much as the first movie, but I think I'm going to go back tomorrow. For anyone wondering, Joss did not add a cute end-credits scene at the last minute. There is a mid-credits scene, but it's brief and plot-related. By which I mean, plot of future movies, not this one. ( Cutting for spoilers )

Typing this into OneNote on my iPad on board a plane on the way to Atlanta for my connecting flight. I am on my way home after a very quick trip home to visit my parents and other family this weekend because it's my Grandma's 90th birthday tomorrow. ( My Grandma's Party )

Last weekend, I attended the last (sob) Muskrat Jamboree in Boston. ( Con Report )

Anyway, that's what's been happening here. No I get to go in tomorrow for what I suspect will be a very uncomfortable conversation with my boss about how he's replacing me and moving me to another position. I mean, I think the new position will be good, but who wants to be replaced?

[personal profile] thalia and I are doing our usual first night dinner, and then registration, and then con tomorrow!

The only thing that sucks is that, due to the way airlines are handling itineraries lately, it turned out to be the best/cheapest/shortest option for me to catch a flight Sunday morning at SEVEN AM, which sucks, but I'm used to getting up early. Although not that early. Bah.

Anyway, got to go finish getting ready. Later!

Well. As I said on twitter earlier, I'm grateful to be able to work from home today so I can sob in peace. For those of you who've been offline, Leonard Nimoy has died at 83.

He was such an important part of my childhood. Rest in peace, Mr. Nimoy.
beck_liz: Kitten stuck in a toilet: Woe (Woe by Cluegirl)
So, yeah. I was visiting my family this weekend for my Grandpa’s 94th birthday (and my cousin’s 40th). I was scheduled to be at home tonight. I am not at home, I am at a hotel near Chicago O’Hare, “courtesy” of United Airlines. They did at least give me a hotel voucher for my trouble.

Apparently I should have taken the offer at my originating airport to take a later flight, as I think I would’ve managed to get home tonight with that. Get home by 10-11 PM, but still, home. But I said no, because my flight from Chicago was scheduled to land at home at 4:30 PM. But my flight in Chicago did not take off on time. Some sort of maintenance issue. So we waited. And waited. And waited. Finally we boarded the flight around 6:20 PM (almost 5 hours after we were supposed to), and settled in. Alas, it was not to be. We sat there for about 10 minutes when they told us that “management” had canceled the flight, apparently because the flight crew would’ve gone over the limit. Thus we got off the plan and dashed for customer service. I got on the phone with United while I was in line and got through well before I got to the front of the line, but the guy supposedly couldn’t find any flights from Chicago to home before 7 PM tomorrow. He said there were flights out tonight to DC and a few other places, but he couldn’t guarantee a flight from there to home. So in an effort to get home before dark tomorrow, I suggested an airport 90 minutes away. So now I’m scheduled to get there by about 2 tomorrow, whereupon I will rent a car and drive to my home airport and pick up my own car and maybe, possibly, be home by 5 PM.

There were a rather shocking lot of people in the very same situation as I, not all going to the same airport. I don’t know what was wrong with United today, but it was very, very wrong.

Sigh. I was supposed to work tomorrow.
beck_liz: Winter Spirit (Winter Spirit by Lanning)
We got some unexpected lake effect snow last night - it was in the forecast, but where my parents are they are frequently just out of the range for stuff like that while places 10 miles west will get hammered. Not so yesterday; our area apparently had the brunt of it, up to 4.5 inches. That may not seem like much, but we'd had the brilliant idea to drive my new car to Thanksgiving at Grandma's to show it off, and none of us really understood what the roads were like when we set out yesterday afternoon. I was driving, and I've been living in SE Virginia for the last 15 years, so I'm not as experienced at driving in snow as I used to be. (Generally when we get snow in SE Virginia like we got here, everything just closes and I work from home, so.)

So we were moving kinda slow the whole way. But we made it, and the car performed well, but when we left Grandma's, the snow was even deeper and the roads even worse, so I made my Dad drive us back. And we discovered that the antilock brakes and the traction control do, in fact, work quite nicely. And it gave Dad a chance to try it out because he's thinking about getting one - it's actually the reason I went looking at Kias in the first place, because Dad had already done a lot of the research and just hadn't gotten around to doing anything about it yet. But he wants a "Solar Yellow" one. :-)

Thanksgiving with the family was pretty good. The food was great, the people were pretty great except for two points, and my aunt has a new Australian Shepherd puppy who is soft and fluffy and completely adorable. ( Cut for picture of adorable puppy )See?

What wasn't pretty great was that apparently every single relative of mine is conservative, white and privileged enough to have really wrongheaded opinions on Ferguson and felt the need to opine upon them at length twice during the evening; once before, and once during dessert. I hid in the restroom, because there was no way I was going to try to take all that much Rush Limbaugh-ism on all by myself. I'm not confrontational enough, and they'd probably just pray for me anyway. *sigh* Food was good, though!

Anyway, I'm starting to drive it back to Virginia this afternoon after I do laundry and take care of insurance stuff this morning. I'll go to about Pittsburgh today and do the rest tomorrow, so be thinking of me!
beck_liz: My cat, Miss Bean, staring out the window (Cat-MissBeanWindow)
So I had a bit of an interesting week. I'm visiting my parents for Thanksgiving and as is usual, I drove here. I have never had any major issues when doing this, and I've been doing this fairly consistently since 1998.

( Cut for my lengthy tale of travel woes )

So I am really, really grateful that things turned out the way they did, and so, so grateful for my parents and the rest of my family. Even if I will probably have to listen to my ultra-conservative Uncle Jim talk about things I violently disagree with him on this afternoon. :-) I am also really grateful I opted for a pet sitter for Miss Bean rather than bringing her with me, because none of my stuff in the car was damaged, she might have been.

Have a happy Thanksgiving, my fellow Americans!
beck_liz: Ginger cat completely flattened against the floor (Flattened Ginger Kitty)
I am so feeling the need for this adorableness today:

Kitty cuddling stuffed animal, animated gif

In particular I had a sucky afternoon because ( Cut for animal harm trigger warning ) ETA: I realize that the cut tag could be indicative of something bad happening to Miss Bean, but she is fine, if a little cranky with me for putting a collar back on her. This is regarding another poor animal.

Then I broke something I kind of needed and which is expensive to replace, so I had to run out to the store for some superglue, and then I proceeded to fail to get it to stick several times and get superglue on the tips of my fingers. No worries, I didn't get my fingers stuck to anything else, and it's mostly off, but UGH. And I have no idea if the superglue is even going to work to fix the thing in question, because it's something that will have some pressure exerted on it. Meh.

I really feel like I've adulted enough for one day.

So something else I've had open for over a week that's been making me feel better is Mr. Sebastian Stan: ( Cut for pic )

So enjoy that, everyone, and thanks ever so to [livejournal.com profile] destina for bringing it to my attention.

And I just realized I've bookended my post with an adorable kitty and a hot guy. :-D Priorities!
beck_liz: Bruce Banner and Tony Stark from The Avengers (Avengers - Bruce & Tony)
The first Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer (links to YouTube), released officially by Marvel because someone leaked a crappy version earlier today. This was supposed to be aired with next week's Agents of SHIELD, but I don't think any of us really mind it being released early.

Marvel's reaction to the trailer leak: Dammit, Hydra.

So at least Marvel's not, like, trying to remove all traces of the trailer and trying to shame people for watching it, right? *eyes BBC Doctor Who folks*

( So here's the embed of the trailer if you'd rather watch it here rather than on YouTube, also some minor spoilers for it )

Speaking of Agents of SHIELD, I am really enjoying this season, particularly ( Read more... )

And my favorite new show of the season is The Flash, because it's fun, happy, and Grant Gustin is freaking adorable as Barry Allen. There are still some things that they need to fix, but I have hope that they'll settle in nicely as the season carries on.
beck_liz: Twelfth Doctor smiling slightly, from his first episode (DW - Twelfth Doctor)
There's a post-a-day thing going on this month, and while there is no way I could ever do that, I figured I should at least post a little bit this month, especially since I haven't posted since Vividcon. At which I had a great time, and I really meant to post more about what vids I liked and may yet do so, but... eh. We'll see. I will be posting a personal post locked after this one, so if you can't see it and want to, let me know.

There have been two whole episodes of Doctor Who I enjoyed this series - the Robin Hood one, and yesterdays, which was especially enjoyable. I can't remember the last time that happened. And I actually had no issues or complaints at all with yesterday's episode, which is even rarer. I'm afraid to hope for a more general uptrend in enjoyable episodes, but I'll take the good ones if they've got them.( Cutting for spoilers for Time Heist )

Let's see, what else. After someone mentioned it on twitter (and after seeing Ken Burns on The Daily Show) last week, I decided to watch Ken Burn's The Roosevelts: An Intimate History this weekend. I didn't know what I was getting myself into - it's 7 episodes, almost 2 hours each. But PBS has made it available online, via the web, Apple TV, and Roku among others, which has made it very easy, and it's very good. If you're a history buff at all, you'll enjoy this. Also I just found out that Meryl Streep and Paul Giamatti are among those lending their voices to this, so that's neat.

I am also watching Outlander, which. ( Cutting for spoilers for 1x07 )

Let's see, what else am I doing fannishly. Still majorly into MCU, particularly Captain America, and still majorly into Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes. But for whatever reason, even though I'm really into that, unlike other major pairings of the past, this doesn't keep me from enjoying other pairings involving Steve and/or Bucky. *shrug* I'm just really into this particular one right now, and possibly forever. I am both looking forward to and dreading the next movies because of all this.

Still sort of in Teen Wolf, and marathoned the last season in 1 day (well, more like skimmed through episodes) so I could watch the finale live. I'm still sort of eh about the season as a whole, but there are several things about the finale that I thoroughly enjoyed: ( Spoilers for Season 4 finale )

Finally, I've gotten into Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries in a major way. It's Australian TV, so it's a little hard to get, but it's about an independent lady of 1920s Melbourne and the mysteries she solves and the trouble she gets into. I'm going going to say it's perfect, because it's not (it's got a few rather glaring racism issues in a couple of eps, for example), but it's got a ton of different awesome ladies being awesome in different ways, and the male characters are pretty great, too. You can see all the Miss Fisher posts I've reblogged on Tumblr here, but here's a good pimping post. Season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix, and both seasons are for sale as DVD sets on Amazon, but I just recently found out that Acorn TV (just Google it) has both seasons for online streaming and they currently have a 1 month free trial offer. Go forth and enjoy! Season 3 has just been greenlit, and I'm looking forward to it a lot.
beck_liz: Battlestar Galactica: Kara Thrace - SQUEE! (BSG - Kara Squee by snoggingpicard)
I sat out most of the 9 o'clock hour mostly because I'd seen the playlist for the last hour and knew I wanted to conserve some energy for dancing then, but there were some songs I couldn't help but dancing to, no matter how tired I was feeling. The vid show was amazing, all vidders are awesome, and the person who put together the vid show was awesome, and everyone dancing was extremely awesome. There were some really great premiering vids last night, but I don't want to talk about them until I have the list with the names on them. :-)

Everyone looked amazing; we had a lot of superheroes - I saw multiple Wonder Womans, Captain Americas, and Winter Soldiers, an Electra, and... at least one other superhero that I saw, but I can't remember which right now. Also someone in a free ball pit costume (from Dashcon meme fame), which was amazing and for which people occasionally had to catch stray balls, and a whooooooole bunch of glitter and sparkles. I wore a dark purple dress with glitter on the top which was surprisingly comfortable and would have been entirely so if not for my sunburn. My high heel shoes would have been comfortable if I'd not been standing/dancing in them for 3.5 hours, but my feet survived the night without wanting to kill me, so I count it as a plus.

Then after we went to [personal profile] gwyn's room for [personal profile] talitha78's Captain America room party, which was great. Saw a number of vids, including the following (that I remember):
- [tumblr.com profile] limnetic's recent & amazing Marvel vid;
- [personal profile] talitha78's Bucky/Steve vid Problem;
- our hostest [personal profile] gwyn's Orange Crush
- and premiering at the party, the sadly unable to attend the con [personal profile] kuwdora's 25 Miles, which was AMAZING (I'm using that word a lot, but it was broadly applicable last night)

Then we stayed and watched Captain America until 2 AM. I ended up next to [personal profile] serrico, who had never seen the movie before although she'd seen enough gifs to be thoroughly spoiled, and technically still hasn't seen the movie because it mostly wasn't loud enough to be heard over the sound of fangirls chatting away. I'm honestly surprised we didn't get a knock on the door a number of times asking us to be quiet. :-)

So a fun night was had by all, and I really need to get in the shower if I'm going to make my first vid show at 11.

ETA: Showered, and found at least one of the premiering Club Vivid vids: [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu's Sleepy Hollow vid In The Dark, music by Fallout Boy - My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light'em Up) - a great vid both to watch, but also to sing and dance to.
beck_liz: Battlestar Galactica: Kara Thrace - SQUEE! (BSG - Kara Squee by snoggingpicard)
So I realize I've been twittering all over the place about this, but (mostly?) neglected to put it anywhere else. (I think I may have mentioned it on LJ/DW offhandedly months ago, but.) This weekend, I'm attending my first Vividcon! Yay! \o/ This is the first year that I can afford the time off for more than one con - most of my time off is spent on visiting my parents and other family. :-) I'm really looking forward to it.

I got in early yesterday and bravely took the Blue Line into Chicago and walked and walked and walked over to meet [personal profile] thalia at Navy Pier to have lunch, and took a boat tour of the river and lake, and then wandered around the Art Institute for awhile. Great fun! Today I have ring around my neck sunburn and my legs want to stiffen up anytime I sit for too long, but it was worth it.

Anyway, if any of you are also at Vividcon, I'd like to see you! I'm wearing my same badge name, and will have a sticker of my default icon, so I should hopefully be easy to spot.

Con.txt!

beck_liz: Battlestar Galactica: Kara Thrace - SQUEE! (BSG - Kara Squee by snoggingpicard)
Con.txt this weekend! So looking forward to seeing everyone. Anyone coming that didn't say so on my last post? My new boss has been kind enough to allow me to a) work from home this morning so I can b) take the afternoon off, leave from home and drive up there this afternoon, which is a relief, because the original plan was to fly in and not get there until after 9 PM. My previous job had a major event today/tomorrow which I needed to be at. Naturally, after everything else changed, that major event? Moved out to next week anyway. :-D Ah, well.

Anyway, planning on leaving between 11-11:30 and so hopefully will be there by 4 at the latest barring any traffic issues. Planning on meeting up with [personal profile] thalia tonight, and hopefully I can meet up with a bunch of the rest of you this weekend! I'm excited!
beck_liz: Battlestar Galactica: Kara Thrace and Laura Roslin hugging in joy (BSG - Kara&Roslin by icequeen3101)
So I am very much looking forward to Con.txt in a few weeks (who all is going??? I want to meet you!), but I have questions about Vividcon. I've signed up to attend Vividcon for the first time ever, and I'm trying to figure out long I should plan on being there.

First, should I come in early? Anyone in Chicago want to hang out a bit that week? (For those not going to VVC, it's the weekend of August 8th.) Also, what's the Sunday schedule look like, usually? Trying to figure out when I should travel back.

===============

In other news, I'm exhausted. I'm starting my new job on Monday - I don't think I mentioned I'd decided to take it? But I did. It's really great, and I'm excited and nervous and really sad to be leaving my old team to the point that I'm really just done with people coming up and telling me they'll miss me because I tear right the fuck up every time. *sigh* And it's a terrifically quick turnover, and thus I've spent the last week finishing what turned into a 26-page manual for my job and trying to make sure my current department has everything it needs before I flee. I've barely been on social media at all this week - about all I've been able to handle is reading a lot of fanfic on my Kindle.

Speaking of which, I spent most of yesterday reading this great post-Captain America: The Winter Soldier fic. I had a really hard time putting it down for things like, you know, work. Even though I've been super-busy at work. It is actually a series on AO3 but I decided to go to the trouble of compiling it into one for my Kindle. It is Your Blue-Eyed Boys by Feather (lalaietha); Steve/Bucky. It feels like a very true and realistic telling of how Bucky slowly put himself back together again, with Steve's help. It also has some great secondary characters including Tony, and very unexpectedly, Betty Ross, who I loved in this. So yeah, 100% recommended. ETA: I should note that the tags say "psychological trauma" and "trauma" and they should be paid attention to. People with triggers should tread carefully.
beck_liz: X-Men First Class: Erik and Charles with blue background and X between them (X1C - Erik/Charles Blue)
I had Friday off work, so I decided to celebrate by seeing a movie Thursday evening. X-Men: Days of Future Past (to be henceforth referred to as XMDOFP because good grief) was showing later than I wanted to be out that evening, but there was a Godzilla showing at 6 PM. Then my plan was to see XMDOFP early Friday morning and then Belle after that. Unfortunately, when I got there Friday to pick up my tickets, I was told they "hadn't received" Belle and that the showings of it were canceled. So I've no idea what was going on with that. I'd still like to see it, but I have no idea if it's still showing anywhere locally. So I'll just be talking about Godzilla and XMDOFP, Godzilla first because I have a good deal more to say about XMDOFP.

( Spoilers for Godzilla )

Now for XMDOFP. ( Read more... )

Anyway, what did you all think?
beck_liz: Natasha from The Avengers: "Thank you for your cooperation" (Avengers - Natasha Cooperation)
So I enjoyed both of the superhero finales this week, for Arrow and Agents of SHIELD, but before I get into that, I want to add a link to the trailer for the new superhero show on CW, The Flash, which looks far more interesting (and entertaining) to me than Gotham. But then I've been growing steadily more tired of grimdark in my superhero media, and Gotham just looks like more of the same.

First, AoS (I refuse to type out the whole thing anymore): ( Read more... )

As for Arrow, ( Read more... )

Oh, and while I'm thinking of trailers for new shows, has everyone seen the one for Galavant? It will be either amazing, terrible, or terrimazing. It's a medieval fantasy comedy musical. On ABC. Next fall. I am amazed that the pilot got green-lit, let alone a series order. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with this.
beck_liz: Captain America: Steve & Bucky (Captain America - Steve/Bucky)
So I've been reading a lot of post-Captain America 2 fic of various stripes lately. There's one I like in particular that I'm going to rec, but as it is spoilery for the movie I'm going to put it under the cut. ( Read more... )
beck_liz: Captain America: Steve & Bucky (Captain America - Steve/Bucky)
Having seen Captain America a second time, I have some follow up random thoughts after my initial reaction post. ( Cut for spoilers )

Going back tomorrow!
beck_liz: Captain America: Steve & Bucky (Captain America - Steve/Bucky)
Firstly and without spoilers, people. This is a Marvel movie. Don't leave at the credits, and don't even leave after the first scene in the credits. Stay to the end. Trust me, it's worth it. Honestly, I don't even with people getting up and leaving at the credits, or after the first scene. How many of these have we had by now, for pity's sake?

Secondly, in the nearly twenty minutes of trailers before the movie, they pretty much had all the Marvel movie trailers ever (X-Men, Spiderman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and I think there was one more I'm forgetting???? I've lost track of how many bazillion Marvel comics movies are upcoming) plus Scarlett Johansson's movie coming out in August, Lucy, which looks like it could be wonderful, horrible, or some combination thereof. Also there was a promo in the "First Look" stuff before the movie for Agents of SHIELD's Tuesday episode. You know, the tie-in episode? So basically it was Marvel-icious in that movie theater.

Anyway. ( Major spoilers for the movie )
beck_liz: Alicia & Kalinda from The Good Wife (Good Wife - Alicia & Kalinda)
So it's been a few days, so everyone who was only an episode behind has hopefully caught up by now, but those of you who are more than one episode behind on The Good Wife? You probably want to catch up now. Especially since it looks like even the episode blurbs for the next episode are spoilery. Major, major spoilers happened on Sunday night's episode, which makes it that much more annoying that the show is on Sunday nights and therefore frequently starts late due to sports events - it started around 45 minutes late Sunday night. I usually DVR it, especially with Neil DeGrasse Tyson's Cosmos conflicting with it, so my solution lately has been to DVR both it and The Mentalist even though I no longer watch The Mentalist just to be sure I don't miss anything. Annoying, though.

( Cut for major spoilers for the March 23 episode )
beck_liz: Ginger cat completely flattened against the floor (Flattened Ginger Kitty)
So I've been sort of absent from LJ/DW. Only sort of, because I'm still reading my flists and making the occasional comment here and there, but yeah. It's been awhile since I've made an actual post. I've been mostly on Twitter & Tumblr, where posting feels like less of an... event, I guess. Not that I still don't love LJ & DW and wish they were busier, but it is what it is.

So what's up with me? This weekend I was not feeling up to driving 30 miles to the only local theater carrying Veronica Mars, so I opted to watch at home. Although I had that Flixter free download code, I couldn't get there in any browser and I wanted to watch it on my AppleTV anyway, so I bought it (and yes, I have heard that the WB is refunding people who paid because they couldn't access Flixster, but I can't be bothered). What did I think? It was a very enjoyable double-long episode! ( Cutting for VM spoilers )

I also recently marathoned nearly all of Season 1 of Hannibal (with the exception of 1x10, which I bailed on less than 5 minutes in) and am currently caught up on Season 2. So here's the thing. I mostly have kept away from serial killer shows, even ones that are theoretically focused on the good guys trying to catch the serial killer, because it has always felt ... wrong to watch it somehow. This started with Profiler with Ally Walker (wow, over a decade ago) and has continued through Criminal Minds and Dexter, although I watched a great deal of CM before I decided I was kind of over it. Hannibal, for all that it's one of the (if not the)goriest shows I've ever watched in my life, is different. [personal profile] serrico put her finger on the reason why a week ago or so: respect. This show doesn't forget that murder is a terrible thing that is done to people, or that Hannibal is really freaking evil. So, yeah. That's how I've made it through the show I thought I'd never watch. Although I still will never actually watch it live. I need my fastforward button for this show. :-)

And finally, thanks to various people gushing about the show (including [personal profile] killabeez, who was the one who finally shoved me over), I watched 7 episodes of the BBC's new version of The Musketeers, and just finished watching episode 8 earlier tonight. I like this show. I was going to say it was Merlin-esque, and it is a bit, but at the moment I think it's being handled a bit better than Merlin ever was, as much as I loved Merlin. Actually, I think one of the things I like best about it is Peter Capaldi's Cardinal Richelieu. ( Cut for spoilers )

Finally, I'm hoping I will get some sleep tonight, as I have an informational interview first thing tomorrow with someone for a possible new job in a different department at work. It would be pretty different from what I'm doing now and I'm not sure I want to change jobs, as I really like the people I'm working with now, and my boss is awesome, but I've been doing it for 6 years come the end of next week, and... I don't know. It's definitely time for something to change, I'm just not sure it's my job. So if you would, please think of me and send your best wishes and/or prayers for good judgment.
beck_liz: Bamboo Yellow Flowers (Default)
I am conflicted about the new show Intelligence. On the one hand, it has the wonderful Meghan Ory (previously seen on Once Upon a Time as Red), who I like quite a bit, Marg Helgenberger, John Billingsley, Josh Holloway's arms, and apparently Lance Reddick is going to make an appearance at some point. On the other hand, ( Cut for spoilers )

Movie-wise, I saw the new Jack Ryan movie Friday night and the Mandela movie on Saturday. I enjoyed both for very different reasons. ( Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit spoilers )

( Spoilers for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom )
beck_liz: BBC Sherlock 2010: Holmes peering over Watson's shoulder (SherlockBBC: Holmes & Watson)
So I watched The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug for the second time, a month after I watched it the first time. In that time, I have read a lot of fanfiction. (I, too, have fallen into the Bilbo/Thorin trap. Sue me. And while I had read some of the fic before, I really dove into it over Christmas.) My main feeling after all that fic and watching it again, was ( Spoiler Cut )

After the movie I went to Target for supplies and groceries, which may have been a mistake. I think I hit the red zone on my social interaction meter at some point, and by the time I got to Target I mostly just wanted to run people down with my shopping cart so they'd get out of my way so I could get home more quickly.

While I'm posting, I might as well put in my two cents about the Sherlock episode "My Last Vow". ( Spoiler Cut ) I will not be livestreaming this weekend's episode, so it will be interesting to watch the reaction roll across social media at around 5 PM EST.
beck_liz: BBC Sherlock 2010: Holmes peering over Watson's shoulder (SherlockBBC: Holmes & Watson)
Just watched the new Sherlock. As a side note, I got an Apple TV for Christmas, which means I got to *ahem* the episode and stream it directly to my widescreen TV from my computer. Yay.

( Spoilers )

Anyone who wants to see the promo for next week can see it here.
beck_liz: House, MD - Why Do I Even Bother? (HouseBother by cheesygirl)
Two things I'm hoping the computer savvy among you can help me with.

First, my 4-year old desktop PC running Windows 7 has had a problem twice in the last six months where I log in and then it just gets stuck on the Windows loading screen and never actually loads Windows. Can get into safe mode with no issues. Last time I went back to a recovery point and that took care of it. This time I've gone into MSConfig and turned off a number of items that start when Windows does. Is my only option to go in and turn them on one by one until I hit the problem again so I can know which item to fix/get rid of? Any suggestions?

Second, I would like to get a new desktop, preferably soon before they start selling machines with Windows 7 entirely. I tried a Windows 8 laptop for a few weeks this summer, and while I could have lived with it, I'd prefer not to and it makes even less sense on a desktop. I have a perfectly good monitor that I have no intention of exchanging for a touchscreen unless that's the best option. Thoughts?

I got home last night after visiting my parents for Christmas week and my desktop doesn't work. So. Frustrating. And it's back to work for me tomorrow. Whoo.
beck_liz: 10th Doctor reindeer pulling TARDIS from 2009 BBC ident (DW - 10TARDISreindeer)
I finally watched it this morning. I was going to watch it last night on BBCA, but although my mom has watched and enjoyed some Doctor Who in the past, she's never been a fan and hasn't watched much (if any) of Eleven's episodes. Given that I was feeling conflicted about the last episode, I decided it was better if we stuck with Fred & Ginger in Top Hat. I have to admit I haven't really enjoyed Doctor Who in awhile, which is nothing against Matt Smith, who was perfectly fine as the Doctor even if I didn't particularly like most of his storylines. I probably liked his first series the best and the rest has just been sort of meh. So I did feel like it was time for him to go, but I also feel like it's time for a change in the creative team. I mostly watch these days out of nostalgia and a stubborn hope that I'll start engaging in it again.

So I mostly watched this episode so I could see how Matt Smith left the show and how Peter Capaldi joined it. ( Cutting for spoilers )
beck_liz: Doctor Who: Christmas tree and TARDIS (Christmas Who by Fuzzy)
Merry Christmas to all who celebrate! I hope that those who don't have a fantastic day also!

I've been mostly on Twitter and Tumblr lately, and let's face it: I was never the most prolific of posters in the first place. But I would like to share two things with you today.
