Farewell Miss Bean
May. 16th, 2020 09:08 amThose of you who follow me on Twitter know this already, but my cat Miss Bean was put to sleep on Thursday. I miss her a lot. I'd been pilling her for about 18 months for Lymphoma, and she'd been doing very well, but went downhill rather rapidly in the last couple of weeks. The vet said that's normal for Lymphoma in cats - the pills work very well... until they don't.
Fuck cancer, seriously.
Tuesday and Wednesday of this week she spent most of her time under my bed, which previously she mostly only would go to stay if she was feeling sick or scared. She spent a lot of her first few weeks with me under that bed, so I knew her spending all day under it was a bad sign indeed. When I took her to the vet on Wednesday, he told me she had a large growth and that I should consider euthanization. There was a drug that could have kept her alive for another couple of months, but it would have just meant prolonging the inevitable and keeping her in more pain. So I took her home one last time Wednesday evening, and she got one last nap in the late afternoon sun. And then I hung out in my bedroom with her most of Thursday (my boss was kind enough to allow me to take time off that day and yesterday), and then I took her and said goodbye.
I've had her since 2014, and she's been a great comfort to me during the pandemic. I told my Mom that she was a great "starter cat", as she was so polite and gentle. I needed that, as I'd never been responsible for a cat on my own before. (Which isn't to say she couldn't be curious and get into trouble.) We had a cat when I was growing up, but though she was meant to be mine when we got her when I was 8, she ended up more my Mom's cat, as I couldn't stop bugging the poor thing and of course Mom was the one who fed her. She lived for 23 years, and that was the baseline I had for cat longevity. So I definitely wasn't expecting only six years, but they were a good six years, and Miss Bean was very, very loved during that time.
I do intend to get another cat, or possibly 2 if I can find a pair together, probably sooner rather than later as I think it'll help to have something else to focus on. But not quite yet. I'm still crying even now. (Any suggestions/recommendations on getting a shelter cat, and especially 2 at once, is appreciated.)
In closing, I'm going to post a bunch of pictures of Miss Bean to celebrate her life. Farewell, my darling girl. I will always miss you.
