Cell Phone
(You tried to call on the Cell Phone.)
It's nothing but garbage noise.
Narration, Chapter 2 onward
The Cell Phone (JP: ケータイ Kētai) is a default Key Item that is always in Kris's inventory. It causes unique dialogue depending on the Chapter and Kris's location. From the Light World inventory, the Cell Phone can be used by selecting "CELL" and choosing a listed number while in Hometown.
Unlike most Light World items, the Cell Phone does not have a Dark World counterpart. When Kris is in a Dark World, their phone does not ring, though they occasionally have missed Light World calls. In Chapter 4, Kris's Cell Phone is on during certain Light World cutscenes, where their caller is conversing on speaker.
- Call Home: the Dreemurr residence's landline is listed at the start of every Chapter.
- Sans's Number/Not Sans's Number: Exclusively in Chapter 1, Sans's alleged phone number can appear after conversing with him in front of the 'Sans store. This number cannot be called in later Chapters, as it is no longer listed in the "CELL" option.
- Call Toriel: exclusively at school in Chapter 2, which is Toriel's cell phone.
- Exclusively in Chapter 4, all numbers have been deleted after Kris reinserts the SOUL at Noelle's House.
- Dreemurr residence
- Calling anywhere except the main room causes Toriel pick up, though she becomes agitated with Kris. This does not occur in Chapter 4 and Chapter 5.
- In the main room, the landline rings. However, narration jokingly states that Kris cannot pick up the phone, as they are already on their cell phone.
- Dark World
- When the Cell Phone is used in any Dark World, it emits 6 seconds of an unskippable
mus_smilesound, and does not function. In Chapter 1, the narration states "But it doesn't seem to be working." Starting in Chapter 2, the narration states that "It's nothing but garbage noise."
- Post Card Kingdom
- Toriel calls Kris[1] when they are about to exit the school. Toriel expresses worry, but is happy that Kris was spending the time with "a friend". She permits Kris to stay out a little longer. This call is scripted to occur at the school entrance, but if Kris calls before then, the dialogue remains the same.
- If called again while in Hometown, Kris asks Toriel to drive them home. Toriel instead encourages them to walk home and reminds them of where her house is located. On the third call, she mentions she is busy grading.
- By talking to Sans, Kris can obtain a second phone number. However, when called, it directs Kris to a hotline for "idiot babies", where the player can choose if they are an Idiot, a Baby, an Idiot Baby, or None. The option then changes to "Not Sans's Number" and rings indefinitely when called.
- Balancing a trash orb at school
- At the school's entrance hall, Kris can call while balancing a trash orb. They have a slightly different response depending if they overheard Alphys and Toriel. It is implied that Kris attempts to offer their phone to Alphys so she can explain their response. Immediately after, Kris informs Toriel that they will be at the library.
- If they did not overhear, they inform Toriel that they "made a "trash orb"".
- If Kris calls after they overhear, they state that they are "normal".
- If called a second time after either of these, Toriel states to not worry about the library.
- Pre Cyber World
- Kris can notify Toriel that they are going to work on their project, causing Toriel excitedly offer to help before Kris states that they have a partner. Toriel is elated, and hopes that their partner likes homemade, "butterscotch-scented gluesticks".
- After any of the above calls, Toriel comments to not worry about the library. She states that if Berdly pesters Kris over their debt, she may come and throw a "smoke bomb" so Kris can escape. She laughs at her joke, and encourages Kris to try their best before hanging up.
- Post Cyber World
- Hometown
- Toriel asks Kris how their school project went and plans to drive them home. Kris states that there is no need, though Toriel is happy to hear they are spending time with their friend. She tells them to be home by sunset before hanging up.
- If Kris calls a second time, Toriel is amused and questions Kris, "What must your friend think?". She then ends the call by telling Kris to have fun with their friend.
- Dreemurr residence
- If called while Toriel and Susie are in the kitchen, Toriel asks Kris to pick up the landline phone. She becomes annoyed and confused when she realizes Kris called.
- If Kris calls while in the bathroom instead, they ask Toriel to give the phone to Susie. Susie yells to Kris to hurry up and finish washing their hands.
- After either of the above calls, the narration states that "(Everybody seems too busy to pick up the phone...)".
- Post Dess's closet
- Selecting "CELL" after regaining control of Kris in Noelle's House prompts them to check their contacts and recent dials, with their contacts deleted.
- Post Flower Kingdom
- After sealing the Flower King Fountain, checking the Cell Phone reveals Kris has a number of missed calls.[2] Checking it the second time onward causes Kris to look at the back side of their phone.[3]
- The debt Toriel references in Chapter 2 is for the How to Draw Dragons book found at the second floor's hallway in the Dreemurr residence.
- The narration's Dark World description parallels an Addison recalling Spamton's past in Chapter 2.[4]

K... Kris!?
— Toriel calling Kris, Chapter 1
Whatever have you been doing!?
I sat in the car waiting for you after school for half an hour...!
I called and called, but you never picked up...
You had your poor mother worried sick!
Kris, I am afraid I am going to have to punish you...
... huh?
... A friend?
You were spending time with... a friend?
...
Kris...
I will make an exception this time.
You can continue your adventures a little longer.
But when you return home...
You are going to have to go to bed early.
See you soon, honey. - ↑
