Been catching up on my PR fanfic lately, and I'm amazed by how well some of these writers can write. There are whole universes created within some of these fanfics that although makes sense, can get very confusing sometimes. I marvel at the authors ability to keep all the facts about their universes straight. Especially those with multi-verses.
My brother himself has a fanfic posted at RB. I like how he crossed over with other authors and storylines, bringing in characters that have already been established and meshing it with his own story-verse. Although his style of writing gives me a headache at times - too many different POVs - and his grammatical errors make me wanna demand he let me proof read his drafts first. Too bad he's too busy now to actually finish the story. Hopefully, if I nag at him enough, he'll complete it when he has the time. He refuses to let me know how the story is going to develop and I really hate stories with no endings.
Reading all these fanfiction has really made me want to go and finish the fanfiction that I have lying around in my laptop for a few years now. It probably needs a complete revamp, since I've got one too many plot bunnies hopping around with huge bats clobbering me on the head to get my attention, and reading what I had written all those years ago makes me wanna bang my head against the wall in mortification. Ah well. We'll see. I'll probably do something about those plot bunnies. As to whether or not I'll do something with it once it's done is another matter altogether. Probably let my brother read it first. If he doesn't laugh in my face then I'll probably post it somewhere. Dratted plot bunnies.
Maybe it's my reading habits, but I'm more inclined towards a fanfiction with romance. If it's more action/adventure, then it has to be written well enough, and be coherent enough, to capture my attention. If it's finished then that's even better. I
really hate to be left hanging. I've been steering clear of a lot of the Tommy/Kimberly ones cos some of them are just so badly written, and/or make absolutely no sense at all. The ones that bash Kat are even worse. Even though I like romance, there are enough fics about Tommy/Kim to make me want to throw up.
I do enjoy some of those with unconventional pairings. Especially when they are written well enough to make the pairings work by exploring the characters and their relationships. One of these pairings is Jason/Kat.
Dagmar Buse has written a few that I really adore about this pairing, like
Casting Stones and
Times Present, Times Past. Another one would be Adam/Kat. Although there are hardly any fanfics written about this pairing, I did happen to find one that I really enjoyed -
Long Stories, New Beginnings by
Moonlite-n-Roses. She did another fanfic featuring Adam in unconventional pairing with Kira that I liked as well:
Drabbles of an Unlikely Duo. I'm currently following a action/adventure/humour fic that she is co-writing with another author,
Rivulet027, titled
An Unexpected Mission. Updates are rather slow, but I am enjoying the fic so far.
While I do pay more attention to Adam-centric fics (mainly because I feel that he has so much potential as a character and the show did not do him justice) and I do adore him, there are several fics that I really adored because of the development of the characters and the interesting plots. Some of them can get confusing just because there are so many characters, like
Didi's
Keys to the Universe and
New Start. I loved
Ellen Brand's Personality Conflicts series, where each ficlet focuses on a different character, almost like the TV show with focus episodes. Her character development leaves me speechless.
I do enjoy the fics that are focused on MMPR just a little bit more because that was the series that I had grown up with, and I lost interest around Turbo, so I wasn't all that familiar with the later characters. However, some fics that I came across caught my attention and I found myself really drawn to the characters, like
the Heritage trilogy that
Jadelyn Tate did that is set in the SPD timeline. She did a couple of oneshots that I adored as well that features another unconventional pairing of Adam/Kim -
Conversations and Revelations and
Precedent.
Although I'm not that big a fan of Mary Sues (even though I am guilty of having them in my fanfics), there are a select few that somehow works for me. Like Carri Hillard from
Ranger Scrolls by
KJ. Several other authors have borrowed Carri and used them in their fics as well. One of them is
KSuzie who wrote the amazing multi-verse fic called
The Coins. I have no idea how she manages to keep the facts about all her universes straight, but there you have it.
I do try to steer clear of the slash stuff, mainly because I'm not a fan of it. No offense to the people who are gay or simply like the yaoi stuff, but it's just not my cup of tea. I prefer my men to be straight, that's all. However, there was one fic with a slash pairing that I did like.
Ibonekoen's
Ninjetti Twins Series. I mostly ignored the slash pairing of Adam/Rocky and just enjoyed the story in that one.
A fic that I've been following for a while now is
Of Love and Bunnies co-written by
CrazyGirl47,
Freyja SilverWillow & Bryn Spikess. The humour and wackiness it it just cracks me up. Yet another fic that I've been following that tickles me to no end is
Left Out by
RedAsARose. A list of things to do at Walmart when you are bored. I just totally LMAO at that one.
One last fic that I can remember just off the top of my head is
One Little Change by
SailorNeo. It's slightly AU, in that Kim and Tommy got back together sometime after the Turbo movie, but pretty much follows continuity apart from that. Romance and humour - what's not to like?
I've mostly been fishing around
fanfiction.net and
Jenga's Library, but I'll probably move on to RB soon. Already there are several fics there that have caught my eye. Now I just have to find the time to read those.
