There is a spinning comm but it's been quiet for a while. Ummm ... A long while?

I threw my skein into the ring and will see if anyone else wants to discuss yarn there.

Adding honey to my tea and wondering if that’s enough honey. Then adding some more because ultimately, like a bagel is the vessel for the cream cheese, the tea is the vessel for the honey

Jewelle Gomez

Rogan: A young person came into the sci-fi library who was super into vampires in general, black vampires in particular, and when I brought out the Jewelle Gomez books, you have never seen someone so hand-flappingly excited.

This is one of those librarian moments I live for, because I SPECIFICALLY have been working to get more Gomez into our collection, because she is great and before I came around, we had only like... two short stories by her in two big different anthologies. (Also maybe a couple essays, but we're overwhelmingly a FICTION library, and Gomez mostly writes FICTION.) Now I've added another anthology with a short story by her, plus two of her books, and I am so pleased to see my efforts bearing fruit, especially since I was wondering whether I was getting anywhere when we are FLOODED with so much Norton, Lackey, McCaffrey and such. Knowing that I made this young person's day, that because of me, we have books they really want, just feels great.

(Jewelle Gomez has a BUNCH of related short stories that as far as I know, nobody has collated into a book. You have The Gilda Stories, which is a full book, but then you have at least seven OTHER Gilda stories that have never been collected, so to get everything you have to trawl a bunch of anthologies, many of which are out of print and came from small publishers. As far as I can tell, NOBODY has ever even pointed out that the non-Gilda works "Lynx and Strand" and "Be Three" are story and sequel, never mind put them together under one cover, even though "Be Three" is borderline incomprehensible without the context of "Lynx and Strand"! It makes me want to chew on my arm, because I'm sure more people would love this author and buy her work if her stuff was just TOGETHER and FINDABLE! The Gilda Stories has been continually in print for thirty years, why hasn't anyone done a Gilda II? With at least seven stories and a screenplay, surely there's enough material to make a book, right?)

Went for a short walk in the woods today because the sky was bright and the air was cool. Almost all the reds are past their prime - mostly just the faded yellows left.

Reading: I read Siren Queen (Nghi Vo), which was unsurprisingly gorgeous, and I've started reading Consider the Fork: A History of How We Cook and Eat (Bee Wilson); I'm also technically still rereading Wilson's The Secret of Cooking, but haven't made recent progress. Oh, and I read a few more chapters of the Dungeon Crawler Carl webcomic.

Last night I suddenly got a normal daily update email from Goodreads. No indication of why it stopped for a couple solid weeks. We'll see if it continues.

Watching: Last night I saw eps. 25-26 of Zhan Zhao Adventures (of 37), so I'm getting there! Just not quickly. I'm still not following the politics well at all, which is in character for me. And during the week [personal profile] scruloose and I saw an episode or two of The Apothecary Diaries.

Weathering: We've had a few rainy, windy days here, but the weekend's weather is looking good. This weather note is really to say that Cape Breton got some snow over the last day or two. o_o Hopefully it isn't sticking around.

Smelling pretty smells: The BPAL Hallowe'en release dropped this week, and after a day or so of agonizing, I (mostly) succeeded in convincing myself (because it's true) that no matter how lovely it all sounds, and despite there being sixteen or so scents I'm interested in (they are on my wishlist spreadsheet, largely in hopes that writing them down has exorcised them from my brain), I absolutely do not need to go in on a decant circle. (Even if it has been about twelve years since I caved on decant circles and I do eventually want to get some newer Samhain...so I can let it age to the point that I like it, but have something newer than 2014.) I essentially don't wear the scents I have; I haven't even tried all of the scents I have (and IIRC have still literally never entirely used up an imp, although part of that is the hoarding instinct, not because I couldn't have worn a favorite enough to be finished with it); the exchange rate and shipping would make it stupidly expensive; and it has been an expensive month here in general.

It did all at least remind me break out my existing Weenies stash and wear scents on a few days.

Farmshare: This is the second-last week of our farmshare for the year (we both lean toward doing it again next year, but the short eight-week one with a fairly small number of openings that's picking up immediately after this one filled up before we decided whether or not to sign up), and by midweek we still had rather a lot of last week's veggies left to work through. Thursday, when we were roughly planning to go do our weekly pickup, wound up being busy and exhausting, so with the end of the farmshare season arriving so soon, we decided to put this week's pickup off until tomorrow (and here's hoping I'm right that the farmshare week rolls over between Sunday and Monday). That'll mean our pickup for the final week is also a weekend one, but we won't be risking a steadily-increasing backlog.

Instead, Thursday night we washed and froze the black kale and celery, the latter of which we also first ran through the food processor. The kale and some of the celery are destined (barring incident) for Samin Nosrat's Tuscan bean and kale soup tomorrow, and that'll leave us some amount of celery for future soups (although so many recipes call for a number of stalks that it'll all be an estimate). Then last night we used up all of our potatoes and leeks and a remaining half of a Savoy cabbage in a second batch of potato leek (with cabbage) soup, so the produce situation is much more under control...until tomorrow.

Happy Caturday!

1. How often do you attend live theater performances?
Not very often, though there are a couple theater groups in the area. It's mostly a timing thing, and also a we don't hear about performances very often thing

2. Local community theater or professional theater productions?
Generally local community theater. I don't think I've ever seen a professional theater production tbh

3. Which do you prefer: dramas or musicals?
I do love a good musical

4. Have you ever participated in a theatrical production, whether acting, singing or tech?
Yeah, the class play in elementary school. That was mostly singing

5. What was the last play or other staged production you attended?
So the last play I went to was one of the theater department's plays in college. I think it was a modern variation of the Mikado? *googles the past theater schedule* Yep! Hot Mikado sounds right. That was back in 2018. And then, Roomie and I did go to the local college's Winter orchestral performance last year, and that was really fun

The first two episodes of Yaga were intriguing. It's a new Canadian show inspired by the legend of Baba Yaga.

It stars Hudson Williams and Carrie-Anne Moss.

The soundtrack has Eastern European and Russian covers of American songs. That fits well.

The novella Volatile Memory by Seth Haddon (The World of Reforged) was amazing! Scavenger Wylla Sotain finds a MARK I HAWK mask holding the consciousness of Sable Alzian.

This is a fascinating sci-fi worldbuilding with AI masks giving animal-related abilities to their wearers. The 2nd person POV works wonderfully to reveal little by little the twists of the plot.

Wylla is a trans woman and they're both sapphic.
