I have actually been posting like crazy over the last week, because I've been participating in the annual Halloween challenge at sb_fag_ends, the site for all your short fic Spuffy needs. Right now it is bursting at the seams with fabulous new fics, most of them written at the speed of light, or possibly smashing the space-time continuum altogether. It's on a points system, and when I tell you I have posted 23 fics and am lying only in third place, you'll see what I mean. Go look - there are some awesome things there. When it calms down (it ends on Friday) I will revise them all, possibly linking some together, and post them here and at AO3, but that will take some time anyway. ( In the meantime I have been busy doing other stuff. Warning: picspam.Collapse )I have begun work on the faux-fur capes. This may explain why this cough won't go away. Lint rollers!!!! ETA: I completely forgot to mention I found the pig in the church. No relation to Babe but a chunk of lead, stripped off the Abbey roof for sale but then mislaid for centuries before being dug up about eighty years ago. Yesterday was lovely. The breakfast was enormous - and we were being restrained! Pancakes, fruits and various meats, smoked and pickled fish, bread of all sorts, yoghurts, pastries, coffee that just kept on coming. We were selective but still ridiculously full. ( Cut for some picspamCollapse )Tags: estonia, family, historical places, picspam, pretty places

It takes me a week, sometimes, to sort out pictures and unscramble my brain enough to make a post. Wednesday is my day off. It also happens to be the day off of my old friend (former bridesmaid, even!) Mary, who lives a mile away with her husband, Dave. (A ridiculously high percentage of my closer male friends is called "Dave". It's the era.) Last week they phoned me - their niece, R, was staying with them. Would I like to go out with them to visit a National Trust property? For those who don't know Britain so well, the NT is a long-standing charity which owns vast swathes of land and rather a lot of distinguished old houses and mansions, to preserve them for the nation. Everything the NT owns is, by Act of Parliament, "inalienable" - it can never be sold, compulsorily purchased or annexed by government. We've been members for many years. Beware of a lot of pictures below the cut. ( So, we went to Canons AshbyCollapse )I think the National Trust is amazing. Every room had a guide, a volunteer who works there unpaid and has accrued an amazing level of knowledge. They enjoy talking about the history, the family and the objects - and they really make the trip for me. Tags: historical places, picspam, pretty places

We went to Bristol for the morning on Saturday. R had an audition at 9.45, which is not a good time if you're coming from the Midlands. She'd have had to take a train at about six, so we nobly drove down, leaving home at seven, both parents, and went for a stroll around while the audition proceeded. ( Cut for picspam of Bristol, including certain TV related sites.Collapse )( We found a certain pink house.Collapse )We packed all this into a relatively short time, and returned home for R to be at her rehearsal on time at 3.00. She's singing a lead role in Hair, though she promises that they all keep their clothes on - bet they don't mention that bit in their publicity! Bristol is an extremely interesting place which I haven't visited enough - as an adult I think I've been there three times, two of which were Diana Wynne Jones related. As, indeed, is the heading of this post. Some of you, Dere Reeders, may even recognise it. R is due to hear if she has a recall sometime later this week. If you can spare the fingers, keep them crossed for her! Tags: family, picspam
