I was looking forward to this, and Mark Gatiss didn't let me down. The world of 1963 was very believable, and I loved the scenes with Hartnell's granddaughter, exactly the same age as I was.
The theme of making it in spite of prejudice (key players an Indian director and a female producer. In 1963!) and of the magic that can result was handled beautifully. David Bradley as Hartnell was wonderful, and deserves all sorts of awards. And a little touch of proper magic near the end brought a real lump to my throat, and very nearly a tear as well.
My little brother and I used to play at being that Doctor, all through the winter holidays that year, and on into many other years. We even had a stick, found in the garden, which we decided was his, and would fight over the right to use it, as you could only really be the Doctor if you had that stick. And we did Dalek voices, like every child in the country - that was a lovely moment on the bus, when Verity saw two children being Daleks and knew it was a hit.
This anniversary makes me ridiculously nostalgic. And looking forward to the next episode of The Show.
