30th-Sep-2006 08:43 am - Hi Everyone! I'm new!
1. Name or user name: Nikki

2. What "major" Holiday do you celebrate?: We celebrate Christmas, but we're so excited about the holiday season that we roll everything from Halloween to New Year's Eve into one big celebration.

3. What do you hope change this Season?: We surprizingly do an okay job of not overspending and getting our gifts ahead of schedule. I've found that if I avoid Wal-Mart at all costs, I don't overspend. So, what I'm hoping to change is getting all of the presents wrapped before December and securely in their hiding places so that it's one less thing I have to worry about. The grand parents on both sides send gifts down for the girls without wrapping them so I'll be plenty busy with that in December.

4. What is your favorite Holiday tradition?: Getting the tree!! We buy a tree from a farm so we pick it out and cut it down ourselves.

5. What is your favorite thing about the Holiday Season?: PEACE!!

6. What is your favorite holiday movie or TV special?: "The Year Without a Santa Claus", with the Heat Mizer and Freeze Mizer. I've loved it since I was a kid.

7. What is your favorite Holiday recipe?: I tell you honestly, friends, I'm not a very good cook. My husband LOVES baking and cooking so I leave it all up to him. So, in place of that, I'll tell you about my favorite air freshener! I like to put water, a bit of vanilla and a few cinnamon sticks in a pan on low on the stove. The key is just to remember to keep water in it!

4th-Sep-2006 08:55 am - Intro and HGP progress thus far.
Intro stuff first. I followed susan402 here from flylady.

1. Name or user name: Beck

2. What "major" Holiday do you celebrate?: Christmas (primarily as a secular holiday).

3. What do you hope change this Season?: I hope to have things organized and under control so there isn't a monumental list of last-minute tasks or I don't feel guilty for not having time to bake cookies for the neighbors or forgetting to send Christmas cards or not taking the time to shop for a thoughtful gift and picking up something on the way to the recipient's house. Generally I would like less stress this year.

4. What is your favorite Holiday tradition?: The tree, definitely. It's just Stacey and me and we can be rather lazy so we have a very cute, prelit tree that goes up in a matter of minutes. We have a huge entry and a small tree so we call it our Charlie Brown christmas tree. We live at the beach and have collected beach-themed ornaments (santa in swimming trunks on a lifeguard stand, a snowperson in a bikini with a flamingo, stuff like that). It's fun and festive and makes us both smile. I hope to start some new traditions this year.

5. What is your favorite thing about the Holiday Season?: I like how everyone is just a little nicer. I like to see stores decorated for holidays although generally it happens earlier than I would expect.

6. What is your favorite holiday movie or TV special?: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (old, Burl Ives edition).

7. What is your favorite Holiday recipe?:
( Thumbprint cookies!Collapse )

Now for my progress: I was doing pretty well with week 1 until we were hit by Ernesto. My rear porch is now a mess again and I still have to relocate some stuff that has been sitting on the front porch for MONTHS. So I'm a little behind on the deep cleaning.
I did make lists -- gift lists, I'm beginning to collect addresses for christmas cards, together we made a list of baked goods and unusual ingredients we need to make those items.
This week I'll be collecting the recipes so we can have them in a central place.
Historically I am a poor menu planner. I'm never able to plan meals in advance and stick to that schedule -- it feels rigid and forced and rather like growing up when we had to have spaghetti on Tuesdays whether we liked it or not. But I'll see what I can do.
And I might even answer all the questions. We'll see.

What major holiday do you celebrate?  Christmas

What do you hope to change this year?  I’d like to have things organized enough that instead of rushing around my family and I can take time to reflect upon and celebrate the real reason for the season.

What is your favorite tradition?  The original Broadway version with Zero Mostel. (Sorry, couldn’t resist. For any who don’t know, “Tradition” is a song from “Fiddler on the Roof”.)  Anyway, my three favorite Christmas traditions are: choosing and cutting our own tree; when all the family gathers at my father’s house for Christmas Day; and going to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert.  (They rock!!)

What is your favorite holiday thing?  Hmm, that’s hard to pin down.  The feeling of anticipation in the air.  People being more willing to be cheerful and nice (unless it’s during a shopping frenzy). Christmas Eve candlelight service.

What is your favorite holiday recipe?  Ever since I can remember we’ve had prime rib and Yorkshire pudding for Christmas dinner.  Now that my mother is gone it’s up to me to prepare it and I always feel her close by when I do.

and here’s a new question for you all:

What’s your favorite holiday movie or TV special?  I’m a sucker for those sappy feel-good Christmas movies!  At our house, we always put on a tape of an old made-for-TV movie starring Mickey Rooney called “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear” when we first start decorating the house.  That’s what signals the start of the holidays for us.

***************************************

By the way, I know I’m really getting into this because this morning on my way to work I passed a house and thought, “Gee, they haven’t cleaned up their front porch yet!”  lol
