Very torn on this movie, because it does have a tremendous cast and it certainly looks gorgeous and well done.

My Week With Marilyn trailer

But on the other hand, really not sure about the apparent plotline of "You mean this hugely famous and successful woman who's gambling her livelihood on this movie project and meanwhile going through an ugly breakup...

"...she's not here to be my Manic Pixie Dream Girl?! Then perhaps she is an Evil Siren? Or, let's be generous, a Victim of the Patriarchy?"

See, okay. Maybe it's just how the trailer is cut. But a thing that's pretty important to know about the filming of "The Prince and the Showgirl" is that it wasn't like Marilyn was only there to look pretty, or was there by happenstance: ( it was the first big flagship movie of her own production company )

Oh who am I kidding, I'll totally see it anyway.

Oh, also: just watched the Doctor Who Christmas special. The episode was slight, but fun: as usual with Moffat, there's some gorgeous worldbuilding with great visuals, and the overall feel of a fairytale. Also as usual with Moffat there's some squodgy gender stuff, but I won't get into that right now.

But I have to give a great big WTF to this bit:

"Guys! We've really got to go quite quickly. I just accidentally got engaged to Marilyn Monroe."

Doctor, this is the second Christmas special in a row now in which you've hooked up offscreen with one of my all-time favorite historical ladies. It always derails my attention completely from the episode's actual plot to wondering (a) how the hell that happened, and (b) why I don't get to see that story.

If you snog and then jilt Dorothy Parker next year, I will be forced to conclude it's all a shameless bid for my attention. And really, I'm already watching the show: what more do you want from me?

I kind of want to write a fic titled "Time Lords Prefer Blondes." Except I'm sure that somebody already has, probably back circa series one. Or maybe "The Doctor's Lonely Hearts Club TARDIS" wherein Elizabeth I, Marilyn, and the Master form Team People the Doctor Left at the Altar.

No, but seriously, how did Marilyn have the number to the phone in the TARDIS?

It's insidious. You say to yourself, one more picture of Marilyn saved to my computer can't hurt. Just one more.

And then two hours later you've got 52 jpegs in a folder on your desktop, and you're wondering how exactly this crossover would work.

Procrastinating? Who's procrastinating?

I keep promising myself that soon I'll put up the big post about Why Marilyn Monroe Was F&%$ing Awesome. And hopefully I will. But in the meantime...
On rumors of her bisexuality:

"I was remembering Monty Clift. People who aren't fit to open the door for him sneer at his homosexuality. What do they know about it? Labels -- people love putting labels on each other. Then they feel safe. People tried to make me into a lesbian. I laughed. No sex is wrong if there's love in it. But too often people act as if it's gymnasium work, mechanical. They'd be as satisfied with a machine from a drugstore as with another human being. I sometimes felt they were trying to make me into a machine."

In the 1950s, yo.

Secondly, been experimenting with iconmaking. 56 Calvin & Hobbes icons, all fully gankable. You're also welcome to add text yourself. Or, if there's text you really really want but can't add yourself, you can ask me.

( I'm not dumb, I just have a command of thoroughly useless information. )
