innocentsmith: marilyn monroe looks away from a book, mildly incredulous (marilyn srsly?)
Going through another box of my grandmother's stuff the other day:

ME: Mom? Why would you design hair clips to look like pink lambs wearing "X"-shaped pasties?
MY MOTHER: What?
ME: ( Check it out. )
MY MOTHER: What on earth.
ME: Right?
MY MOTHER: ...I don't think those are pasties, though.
ME: What else could they be?
MY MOTHER: But wouldn't they have to be...lower? And more of them?
ME: Congratulations, you just made it weirder.

I kept them, obviously. I'm not usually much for barrettes, but these are a must-wear for Easter.

On another note, I remembered today that April is National Poetry Month! Have a poem.

I am sort of warily poking at the idea of writing a companion fic to my DSSS fic, Outer Space Is a Lovely Place. (I know, I know, I go on and on about my WIPs and then they never see the light of day. I don't know what to tell you. I am flaky that way.)

See, I was...sort of okay with how that story turned out, despite my awful screaming yellow zonkers crazy discomfort with the sex scene. Seriously, you folks who can write porn easily and fluently? I am in awe. I left that bit to the last minute, of course, and then I would write two sentences and then have to get up and run around the house going, "AAAAAAAH!" for ten minutes before I could sit down and start typing again. It was brutal. I even considered getting myself drunk to lower my own inhibitions, but since I was already on ALL THE CAFFEINE IN THE WORLD that seemed unwise.

But in the weeks leading up to deadline, I was avoiding having to sit down and write by making notes about vast quantities of plotty stuff I didn't actually end up putting in the final product, so effectively what the fic became was one slice out of a much bigger story about Fraser and Kowalski being terribly attracted but terribly confused by each other, getting to know each other by telling stories.

...And then I found this poem by Richard Siken which uncannily is the fic I wanted to write. Freaky. Anyway, I loved it, so I wanted to share it.

Scheherazade

( it’s more like a song on a policeman’s radio )

...Is that or is that not clearly about F/K? I ask you.

I was flipping through my copy of Poems of Robert Herrick, looking for some good 17th century making out for [livejournal.com profile] zabira's weekly (and awesome) Monday Kisses post. And I happened upon a poem which had somehow (heaven knows how) escaped my notice before.

It's tentacle pr0n. My hand to God, poetry written circa 1648 which would not look at all out of date as the plot in something scanned and uploaded to a hentai website. Check it.

You know, it's probably just as well that I didn't go into teaching English. Because I'd really have trouble not assigning this as a reading, just to see if my students were awake.

If you're ever trying to find a link to the notable SGA AU commonly known as the Nantucket 'verse? Your best bet is not to type "nantucket verse" into Google.

OTOH, I now have a bunch of limericks to read. Which can only be a good thing.

There was a young lady of Exeter
So lovely men all craned their necks at her.
One was even so brave
As to take out and wave
The distinguishing mark of his sex at her.

For no good reason, except that I love it and was just reminded of it:

Love Without Hope
by Robert Graves

Love without hope, as when the young bird-catcher
Swept off his tall hat to the Squire's own daughter,
So let the imprisoned larks escape and fly
Singing about her head, as she rode by.

(Reading it, I always feel inspired to write a story based on this poem, but am never sure quite how. Probably the problem is just that it's entirely enough of a story on its own.)

1. I love bagel Fridays. The breakroom kitchen is just small enough that all the mixing and mingling takes place in twos and threes, which is exactly the kind of mixing and mingling I'm half-decent at.

Tech guy, leaning in to look at my t-shirt: I wouldn't normally stare at your chest, but the writing is small.
Me: I understand.
New employee guy: Are you two familiar?
Me: ... *eyebrow*
New guy: I mean, do you know each other?
Me: We've both worked here a while. So, you know. Not just some guy I've never met who just came up and started talking about my chest.
New guy: Yeah, I thought...
Me: Although that happens sometimes.
New guy: I know. Well, I don't know, but.
Me: You mean random guys don't come up and stare at your chest?
New guy: Well, a few have. But they were drunk.
Me: And you were in college at the time.
New guy: Yeah, I've pretty much put all that behind me.

XD

2. Suddenly, and without warning, I found myself reading 2001: A Space Odyssey slash. Well, I think it's slash. Should HAL be presumed to be male? Hmm.

April is National Poetry Month.

Lovers how they come and part

A gyges' ring they bear about them still,
To be, and not seen when and where they will.
They tread on clouds, and though they sometimes fall,
They fall like dew, but make no noise at all.
So silently they one to th'other come,
As colours steal into a pear or plum,
And air-like, leave no pression to be seen
Where e'er they met, or parting place has been.
