Pride has come and gone... Again... And just like last year, it lacked any real luster only worse. I said the same thing about last year compare to the year before last. The pride is here in Jacksonville, but the drive isn't. I think moving it to the beach was a near fatal move for the committy. Don't get me wrong... There is still a heartbeat in the festival. And it is possible that it could be revivied... But it's going to take allot more than they've been giving it over the last few years. I remember, back in the late 80's, early 90's, when the festival was held at Willow Branch Park in Riverside. I never went to one. I passed THROUGH one. I drove by them. I walked by/pass them. And there were so many people and so much color and so much going on. The thing took up both sides of park street in the park and seemed to extend for miles. I wasn't even totally out yet and I got a good feeling from the vibe that radiated from it. Then, when I finally do burst out all happy and stuff back in 97, I got to go to my first pride fest. And it was at the Fairgrounds. And it was a BLAST. Again, so many people, so many colors, so much to DO! I was in new little lesbian heaven. :) But then the next year came along and there were more vendors, and less to do. Then the next year, even MORE vendors, and even LESS to do... Then we move to the beach. The same thing. Only this time, it's more vendors and nearly nothing to do. And they've moved the festival to AUGUST, the hottest month of the year, instead of JUNE, the nearly and probably 4th hottest month of the year. I know it's the City who more or less forced it to be moved to August. Well, at least, that's what Im told. Of course, they also say that they moved it because they are trying to stop the festival all together by giving us the month with the heat. But I think a big part of why the festival has gone the route it has is because of the lack of enthusiasm from diffrent directions. I've been to other pride fests in other citys and have had nothing BUT fun. Cause they have all this stuff to do, games, singers, a few celebs here and there (local and otherwise), ect... I dont know... It seems that the want to have a good festival is there, but when it comes down to it, we're all standing there in the sweltering heat, drinking over priced beer (we're used to that one :D ) and eating food while we go up and down the vendor tables. And they actually stretched them out this year... VENDOR, COMPANY, CHARITY, VENDOR, COMPANY, CHARITY, ect... Yesterday I went to the festival... I stayed MAYBE 2 hours... It was to hot. And there was to little to do. I lost intrest and got frustrated because it was so bloody hot.
I'm not saying I dont appretiate our festival... I'm not saying our festival all out sucks balls... I'm just saying, it could be better. We have the means to do it... But it just doesn't happen. And I don't know why. And that makes me sad. :(

First let me apologize, because I'm sure you get a boatload of questions like this every week or so, and I've even read back over quite a few entries but none really answered my question.
My partner and I are moving from Baltimore to Jax, and we're looking for an apartment to stay in while we settle into the city and find a house to buy. So what I need is just a decent recommendation for apartment complexes or neighborhoods to look into. We'd prefer something gay friendly, relatively safe, and within easy distance of the stuff we need (which in my case is a bar and gas station, not necessarily in that order). Right now we pay $1100/month, so we could go up to that, although we'd prefer not to go over.
Do you have any insight as to which areas are more gay-friendly/diverse? We're not super flamboyant people, but I want to feel ok and safe wherever we're living. I don't feel that way now. We're flying down to FL the early part of next month to check it out, and I'd like to have a list of places to look into by then.
If you're feeling super magnanimous, and have any relevant info, I'm a child psych nurse and will be looking for employment in Jax. I've googled the hell out of your town and all I've found were psych/behavioral units inside bigger hospitals. Do you have any freestanding psych hospitals/mental health institutes?

Hello, my name is Steffanie. In mid-October I will be moving to Jacksonville (not sure what area yet). I'm looking for maybe a studio apartment or small 2 bedroom apartment. For now, it's going to be just me but later on I might request the presence of a roomie. If anyone knows of any apartments available for rent or to buy can you please let me know? Also, what are all the areas in Jax? I know of Duval, Clay, West Arlington, Fleming Island, and Orange Park.

I haven't really been on LJ in a while but I moved to Jax last week for summer school at UNF. I'm looking for some new friends to chill with possibly. I've only got one person in Jax that I'm friends with and get to chill. We went to the Metro last weekend and NO ONE was there but hey gotta free tarot card reading. Then I found out my gf cheated on me and we broke up...well we broke up before she told me she cheated but still...it hurts. Overall its been a bad week and I need friends :(
