Taking a brief break from building RG Exia to catch up on other things and eat... And I was randomly reminded of a community that I saw advertised the other day. No check-ins, except for needing to fill out a form for every single post. No exclusions except for this stuff that actually excludes a lot of people (and is overly vague)... All these formats allowed, except actually works have to be transformative. (I suspect the mods literally don't know what they're saying there?) Anyway, the initial hook was a good one and perhaps I'll steal it as it's certainly not nailed down.

RG Exia is an interesting build so far. Unlike any kit I have built, ever, the starting point is the legs. But this is also my first RG so perhaps it's a line-specific thing?

I realized earlier that I haven't heard my upstairs neighbor in at least a few days. I can't remember the last time I saw his car, either, so I guess he's headed somewhere warmer for the season. He always used to, and then stopped at one point, and now I can't remember what he's done for the last few years. ^^;;

Combination hangar and manger, the Mangar is a silver manger with colorful LED lights and model Acerby decorating a little Christmas tree while model 00 Gundam attempts to untangle some garland.

I'm working on The Mangar again this year. I've finally got it (mostly) de-mossed and painted, and mounted the first set of little LED lights I found. There is a ways to go, but that's fine.

I have seen [community profile] sunshine_revival wander by a couple of times and finally stopped to ask what exactly it was. It's hard to promote a community that has no details. ^^;; Anyway, a mod replied back that they "will be explaining more in the introduction post before the challenge starts but basically we will be providing two prompts for each challenge. One of the prompts will be geared towards journaling or reflection (mostly generic but one or two might be more fandom-oriented) and the other prompt will be for a creative option. Many of the creative prompts are toward writing, some are art. However it’s very casual so you could skip any challenge that doesn’t appeal or modify the prompt as you like!"

There's also [community profile] expandingfandom, a post-AO3 comm for these post-AO3 times... (I keep mentally parse it as Exploding Fandom for some reason.) I kid, to a degree. Maybe it's more of a pre-AO3 comm for these post-AO3 times. Anyway, as someone who does lots of comms and events on DW, I am all for more stuff not on AO3 and therefore more accessible to me, personally, a person who no longer posts on AO3. There's only an intro post so far; we'll see what happens.

3 Weeks 1

It's [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth time, a fest-in-a-sense that I used to avoid like the plague (in the original meaning, not the 2020 version) but have come to embrace because yeah, okay, kinda twee but I actually do like DW and what it's offering.

Anyway... I don't know if I'll manage something every day. I think I tried last year and then fell all the way off, but it's still the 25th so I've posted up an invitation to read over on [community profile] readingtogether. Maybe I'll finally get some reading done... I've been really unfocused and/or so exhausted when I go to bed (my usual reading time is pre-sleep) that I just zonk out.
kalloway: (Lucifer 9 RoB Cheeb)
I feel mildly guilty at starting this off with yet another comment about how tired I am, but it's the truth. I made it through the week and my appetite has mostly returned, but I am definitely still low energy despite a lot of sleep. Of course, the weather is not helping, nor is work.

However, I am still doing things, including co-modding the new community [community profile] makezines, which is dedicated to making zines (and zines in general), especially DIY zines of all types. Zines!

[community profile] tv_talk has a friending meme going on over here.

I'm still trying to get my project desk cleaned up. I managed to clean out the drawer and put a bunch of rusty x-acto blades in the scrap bucket and then picked out a bunch of crap tweezers to also go into the scrap bucket. Also sorted thru a pen (etc.) cup that was sitting there and ooof, those were some dead pens. But I have found three different red paints to try out for the details I want to do on Sengoku Astray's sword hilts, and also three markers. Goal is to get them done this weekend, but it'll keep depending on finding viable paint. (I'll also need a dark silver and a gold.)

I also need to do things with plants. So many plants...

I am mildly in awe of everyone posting 2024 roundups where they have kept track of stuff. I am basically a chaos gremlin on my best days; how am I to know what I read/wrote/watched/did?

Anyway, I've seen a few people doing general project updating and I should really do that too. I'm just going to work my way down my journal's side-bar, I guess.

The Lemonade Cafe on Neocities - general update + updated links page/removed twitter 'link'. If you have a website or fic journal or whatever and would like me to link to it, please just let me know. ^_^

[community profile] lemonadecafe - minor update; I also updated a few graphics the other day and added easy-to-copy alt-text. It's not retroactive yet; that'll be for another day.

Archival AO3/Yaoiville/SqWA sites are archival; I put the chairs on the tables on Squidgeworld the other day so that's done. AO3 has been like that for awhile, and I can't access YV so hopefully the lack of updates for almost a decade is enough of an indicator. ^^;;

Leaving my twitter link for now even though I probably check the site once a week for game news or something. I wonder if it'll last the year.

I don't think I need to do anything with [community profile] spring_renewal til April. I'm tossing all the old prompts this year and we're starting fresh. (I'm not tossing all the old prompts personally though; I have a bunch printed out that I like, lol.) Same with [community profile] octobercest and October. Hopefully I won't have a sinus infection and family emergency eat the entire month for me this year. ^^;; [community profile] no_true_pair should run on a similar schedule; it looks like I normally post that around the beginning of February...

I would like [community profile] small_fandoms to be more active, but possibly with fewer scheduled activities. I'm unsure how to achieve this, though. Either way, I guess we'll start with the annual February Drabblethon. I also need to do some promo for [community profile] videogamefanworks, and perhaps we'll have the mid-year 'make something!' fest again. While I'm promo'ing that, I should promo [community profile] mobilegames which is a more general community... As is [community profile] smallweb. I guess I should just... do some promo. I just then feel bad about doing promo because I don't want to be spamming anyone. ^^;;

[community profile] inspiredby is good as-is, and [community profile] promptmepromptly needs a re-work before it's viable. [community profile] ficortreat will be October... And that's everything that's not in a layer of mothballs, I think.

Anyway, I guess I need to level up my advertising or something.

This Again

Balanced my checkbook and shoved another pack of checks in it. I am absolutely still a check-writer; they're actually still preferred by a lot of the smaller local businesses and non-profits. (Well, also cash, of course.)

I ended up spending part of the morning digging through notes, since its time for amnesty on [community profile] 100words and I know I'd had a printout of the prompts I haven't done. This is a printout I keep making and losing, somehow... Anyway, did it again and just saved the file for when amnesty rolls around again. (I was using one from last year, I didn't have to start all the way over!)

Keeping an eye on [community profile] fandomgiftbasket. This might be the year I don't manage to make more gifts than I receive, but this summer was just rough. (iirc I posted more than twenty last year, hopefully that evens out my karma) Posting late stuff isn't much of an option either since a lot of participants don't have DW accounts. A downside.

I'm staring down 2025 and hobby-stuff plans, even though it is only September. But if I make some plans now, I have a framework and can adjust as necessary with new data?

Definitely going to have to make some new plans/adjustments with various communities I run...
kalloway: (KoH Raphael)
NaNoWriMo, hot on the heels of last year's clusterfuck, has gone all-in on being pro-AI and I do mean generative AI and is calling critics classist and ableist. There is at least one alternative in the works by someone in the Fediverse; details when there are details about that.

AO3 then decided to piss off an entire meta-fandom along with a whole lot of other people by synning the "Sherlock Holmes - All Media Types" tag to BBC Sherlock. (Other examples include synning, oh "Cinderella - All Media Types" to Disney's Cinderella...) At this point I can't imagine things getting better and once I catch up with myself, I'll probably start deleting my stuff. If they don't even want to be a usable archive, what's the point? (And then AO3 went down for like the better part of twelve hours, which was sure something.)

Work wasn't too bad even after the long weekend. My brain is mush, but it could be worse. I finally got my own ideas together for [community profile] no_true_pair but I think they'll all wait for amnesty at this point. ^^;; I still gotta see if IIBB is a thing that can happen.

Spent more than two hours, mostly on hold, with the phone company trying to get the 'rents phone/internet working again after ??? happened. Finally got passed to the right guy who reset one thing and had it all working in like two minutes. *facepalm*

Got August's mail sent before running out of August, and got my old phone updated at the library. Waitress at our usual Sat lunch spot mentioned we were running late so she got to hear the whole phone company story... ^^;; Usual Sat lunch spot went from pre-remodel blaring loud Asian pop from the kitchen to post-remodel playing canned and terrible covers of mostly already mediocre songs. This actually has impacted how often we go/eat in. But we are getting back to ~weekly, I think. ^^;;

It is nearly September, which means time for a lot of posts across places. Whew! Folks are already posting to [community profile] no_true_pair, I see a first post is up for [community profile] smallweb September, and [community profile] bbtp_challenge is open. I also need to do a quick roundup and check tags on [community profile] small_fandoms and announce some stuff over there.

Also aiming for a couple thousands words for [community profile] iddyiddybangbang this weekend or else I'll gracefully drop. I know what I want to write, but August.
kalloway: (Exos Benten)
Firstly:

[community profile] smallweb is going to be having Small Web September which is basically just a challenge for the month to work on your website/whatnot. I am not the one running it and that it is happening brings me joy. Like, to have folks using the community to do things - this is what I want for this community. ^_^

Anyway, there's no minimums or anything - if you just want to challenge yourself to update some tiny bit or make a whole new thing, it's all good.

Otherwise:

I am working on catching up on comments/emails/correspondence. My apocalypse fic is done and posted (privately) on my DW fic archive so I can just unlock it in a few days, and I at least have some ideas for BBTP. (But it got hot again and blrgh.)

Caught up with [personal profile] ket_makura for lunch and semi-belated birthday stuff (where did August go?) and also dropped by the library for a few minutes and tablet update over the weekend.

For anyone curious about the AmazonJP blank-book saga, and the new-to-me courier, the first package (I did order a couple other books and the order got split) made it across the ocean to LA, through customs, and now "Package transferred to another carrier for delivery." though I don't know which one. I am guessing USPS for a long-distance last-mile delivery but I won't know for sure until tomorrow when I can inquire to the male parent if I've had a package label pop into mail tracking (since packages go there not here). The other package has arrived in LA but hasn't hit customs yet.
kalloway: FFXV's Aranea in War of the Visions (FFXV Aranea 1)
No production today so I ate a dayshift to be able to work. Ended up doing the exact work I didn't want to do (nothing hot, pls? ah yes let's literally do one of the hottest things possible)...

I still have a half-typed entry from last weekend to finish. Bleh. Too hot, not enough brains + a bad case of "but nobody cares, K".

[community profile] no_true_pair signups are open. It's an old-school mad-libs challenge where you make a list of characters and then get prompts featuring them in different combos.

[community profile] small_fandoms has its hopefully-annual August fest going on now, too.

JFF Theater - the Japanese film fest from a couple of months ago has renovated into an ongoing selection of films, anime, and dramas. Completely free, check for compatibility with language+country of residence/vpn.

And because I need more books, I snagged Humble Book Bundle: All About Gaming by MIT Press,
From D&D to Call of Duty, this bundle from MIT Press explores the histories, cultures & theories driving games of all types! Your purchase helps Girls Who Code.
- there are only a handful of days left on this one, if it sounds interesting to you.
kalloway: (KoA Siegfried Purify)
[community profile] inspiredby prompts are up for August. ^^;;

[community profile] videogamefanworks has its first challenge posting dates next week!

[community profile] small_fandoms has has the Evening Sunset fest coming up in August, prompts are all Rolling Stones song titles because I felt like it.

(and a note to myself to get the [community profile] no_true_pair prompts finalized because signups open ~August 1)

Adoptable moths for websites!

Robotech: Among the Stars Kickstarter, for new Tabletop stuff. I have the first book of the set and missed the KS for the second and distribution has been ass so I'm probably going to go kinda hard on this. (Part of me is like 'do I need this?' and another part is like 'self you were incredibly mad a few months back at finding out the second part is impossible to get so even if you never play it, just get it and shut up'.)

Anti-Caste Speculative Fiction - by Blaft Publications, who I follow on Fedi, and this is their second KS. (I always want to buy a ton of random zines from their site - maybe once current random orders are done?)

Half-Year

Home again... Actually, I've been home since early-afternoon on Saturday. What was technically only an overnight trip still felt like three days, somehow. I unfortunately need to be a bit cagey about exactly what I was there to do, but I can say my objective was achieved. Along the way, I ate a ton of good food, walked a lot, bought a giant stuffed d20, and met a kind and humble rock star.

It is time for [community profile] fandomgiftbasket - I'm working on a long-list of requests, which might be the same as last year's with a couple of additions/subtractions.

It is also the end of the first round of [community profile] promptmepromptly, which went pretty well overall! I know I had wanted to do some overhauls to the signup form and... ??? what were they??? *sigh*

I'm working through my inbox again, so allow me to offer the usual apologies for really late replies (or none at all, if enough time has passed that it feels too awkward to yell "YEAH!" like a half-caffeinated Kool-Aid Man before shambling back off into the night...)

I'm sure I had some other things to mention, but it is time to head off to work...
kalloway: (Exos Ramge & Sia)
I bought a notebook at the grocery store which is pre-titled 'Ideas'. So far, it is empty.

[community profile] videogamefanworks is hosting a 'make something' challenge running through June-July with posting late-July. It is a low bar and I will probably trip over it.

The [community profile] small_fandoms Surprise Scramble is over, though late entries are quietly welcome.

Quiet-ish weekend. I bought a new boombox, so hopefully I can get back to making some tapes for work (and theoretically taking something that can play cassettes to work, I guess) and whatnot. Also stopped at a craft store to see what they had and got myself a few stickers and some feather and wing charms for potential lulz. (it may depend if I can paint them - I may have to buy some better paint)

More information on the Japan Film Festival Online which is starting in a few days. Availability varies by location so get your VPN ready, but there's a good selection overall. I hope I can watch a few things.

Oh! And debating signing up for jukebox june—a musical prompt fest (untrue, we know I'm going to do it)
kalloway: Zeta from Granblue Fantasy (GBF Zeta)
(Started yesterday before work, maaaybe I can get it posted today?)

Well, it's nearly May and that means its time to make a list of things I'd like to do in May which is basically daydreaming but also something to look at if I'm flailing around unfocused.

I have a lot going on IRL with both family and work but, IDK, having hobby things going on helps keep me calm? Or something else to think about, at least. [Things I need a minute or two a day to check on, basically. And things that will not fall apart if I need to step away for a day or two.]

It has been a year since I last posted to AO3 and I feel like I have a lot of thoughts about this but maybe I don't? As I've mentioned before, I feel fine. There have been some fests and exchanges I've clawed at the walls for a minute over missing, but then I've been fine. I've fully realized the ridiculousness of relying on AO3 for everything including as a tool for validation (and vaguely thought that before - it does make sense for events also happening on AO3 and I'm going to die still laughing that Yuletide finally removed its head from its ass the year I'd fucked off) despite the idea certainly brewing for awhile, and I've embraced being able to set up my own stuff the way I want.

Talking about how I got from Point A to Point Q feels repetitive, and it's not a straight shot anyway. In short, it was the perfect storm of already poking around the smallweb, missing the smallweb, and all the absolutely heinous stuff that came out about the OTW/AO3 last May (and kept coming out and keeps coming out)... I think even if I was still doing some stuff on AO3, I'd also be making the smallweb jump.

I wrote a wrap-up post for [community profile] spring_renewal and a nudge for [community profile] promptmepromptly and definitely have some thoughts on the latter. I'm running a minithon on [community profile] readingtogether, and Promofest will start on [community profile] small_fandoms in a few days.

I exist in the obnoxious void between "everyone is going to get tired of me promoting stuff" and "nobody will know if it never comes up". Blrgh.

2018 calendar by artist mushimaro with a cover containing characters from multiple cygames properties

( sample months )

A lovely 2018 desk calendar! Aside from the cover, there are months for both Lucifer and Albert which are very nice. ^_^ Obviously it dates to around the same time as my wallscroll and pins. \o/

Well, [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth has begun. I admit to the concept being a little abstract but the gist seems to be 'do things on Dreamwidth' and I am good with that!

I updated my 'annual' multi-fandom prompt community list - it's right over here and I'm definitely looking for additions. I know I've missed things. ^^;; (But all the closed communities have been removed, at least.)

I don't know if I'll manage things every day, but I do want to just post to communities and chat with people and w/e.

ETA: [community profile] inspiredby is updated with May's potential inspiration~
kalloway: (Lucifer 6 RoB)
A wall scroll of Lucifer from Rage of Bahamut, illustrated by Mushimaro

Since I had commented on sharing shinies, here is the first shiny! A gorgeous wall scroll of Rage of Bahamut!Lucifer and a big part of the reason I made the order - when was something like this going to come up again? I've already started on arrangements to have it properly framed. ^^;;

(Sorry about the angle - the best place to get him out and unrolled was in the hall which makes it impossible to back up properly for a good picture.)

[community profile] no_true_pair is over for a few months, and it's time for [community profile] spring_renewal. After this round (which probably ends in 2025), I'm tossing all the prompts in the bin and starting over. I always disliked communities that did this but I definitely see the necessity now (alas). I'll just have to save all the prompts I like for later~

It's a new month and I'm doing some general social media/community cleanup. It's nothing major, just unsubscribing/unfollowing from things I'm not really doing anything with right now. (Fighting the conflicting urges of 'I am so happy to see people doing/making stuff!' and 'There is too much going into my skull right now!'...)

I made a short-ish list of projects for the weekend and am working on them a bit slower than intended. ^^;;

So far, I have archived three Atelier Online: Alchemist of Bressisle fics to Neocities and [community profile] lemonadecafe, and will turn them loose on SqWA in a bit. Both 2022 and 2023 were messes for different reasons and I didn't archive much either year, so I also have a lot of stuff in my folder that might've been posted only to various communities or not at all. I'm going to try to start working some of that into my routine as well. (Along with things from this year, which is yet another new year.)

I also tweaked tags on one drabble on AO3 to a more specific category. It was a late treat from an exchange and the person it was gifted to has never surfaced again after a reasonable amount of years so I figure I'm fine to change it from the more umbrella category they'd requested to a specific one.

[community profile] no_true_pair is open for signups.

Over on [community profile] promptmepromptly, I'm offering Exos Heroes, Dragalia Lost, and Rage of Bahamut fic alongside original fantasy/sci-fi. I'm really happy with how the community has worked so far and how thoughtful and responsive folks have been. (I definitely have ideas for tweaks already. This isn't quite a community-by-committee but there are so many variables at play that I'm welcoming feedback with the most open of arms.)

I feel like I should be doing something more 'productive', but have no idea what that looks like so I'm going to keep on noodling along with virtual things. Maybe I'll try to sort some book piles down later, or go through a few things in my closet.
kalloway: (Xmas Lights 16 Points of Light)
Before I forget (again), I have gotten cards in the recent(enough) past from [personal profile] used_songs and [personal profile] misbegotten, thank you!

And I've gotten a few offer sign-ups on [community profile] promptmepromptly and am hoping for more. There's a few days left. I made a post to [community profile] fictional_fans, too, which is fairly low-traffic. I'm just not ready to hit up, like, [community profile] fandomcalendar with what is absolutely a beta test.

The strap tore off my work bag about thirty feet from my door yesterday, which was mildly annoying but not a huge surprise. This work bag was a small soft cooler, which I'd bought last year for less than $5 from a bin of budget father's day gifts and only because my previous work bag had absolutely died of old age.

Reattaching the strap is probably possible but likely also requires more technical skill than I have with mending and also time I'm not sure I want to spend on a bag I've never felt like I actually liked. So I'll put it aside and if I've not touched it in a $timeperiod, it can go.

I ended up using a ratty tote last night and all I really learned from that is that I need a bag with one small-ish pocket. I'll keep digging around in my bag collection and see if anything I have might work.

Dream workbag is big enough for a couple bottles of water and my lunch, various supplies, a few notebooks, phone charger, wrist brace, small tablet, brush, a few more notebooks, some pens, snacks, also notebooks, and a notebook or two. Strong strap necessary, cross-body would be amazing but at worst, something that actually stays put on my shoulder. Must have room for more notebooks than that.

They're my emotional support notebooks, it does not matter that I don't even look at them.
kalloway: (Xmas Ornaments 6 Golden)
I used a vacation day for tonight-coming, basically as a mental health day. I am nowhere near ready to play FFVIIR2, but I might start FFVII on Switch.

The Game Magazine That Spent Two Years Taunting A Final Fantasy VIII Hater - this is amazing in every way and now I need to dig around and see if I have any issues of this. (ETA: I do and I found the screenshot!)

Bound Up in Fanfic Controversy Fanfic authors are contemplating scrubbing the internet of their writing due to bound book sellers stealing their work.

This just makes me angry, even as someone who doesn't write anything long enough or popular enough to even worry about having someone poach it.

[community profile] small_fandoms has managed over 100 drabbles (ha!) in this year's drabblethon! I wasn't sure how well the fest would do off AO3 but the answer is fine and that brings me joy.

I'm watching the current Automattic/Tumblr/Word Press situation unfold and am especially impressed with how folks on the Fediverse are sharing resources and whatnot. Fedi has been such an uplifting experience in general. (I'm taking a brief break from posting, though. This week has been stressful and I was feeling overly perceived in general.)

Me: I want to talk to people!
People: Hello!
Me: Help, people are talking to me!

Of course, with [community profile] small_fandoms wrapping up for a couple months, it is now time to start planning for March and both [community profile] no_true_pair and [community profile] promptmepromptly. I'm not advertising the latter beyond word of mouth and traditionally don't advertise the former beyond word of mouth, either. (I do advertise the ~fall round, but the ~spring mini-round is more casual.) I don't think either will be too stressful, though I do expect [community profile] promptmepromptly to introduce some questions and situations I hadn't anticipated that will inform future rounds. (i.e. can't predict people)
kalloway: (SaGa Subier 8)
Had to make a stop at the 'rents on Saturday as a combined wellness check and flower delivery. (All is okay enough and I don't have to worry about killing these daffodils, now.) Mailed out mail like two weeks late (whoops) and exchanged library books. Visited the five-n-dime but it's so empty that there wasn't anything I could find to buy. (I'll probably go one more time before the end, but it's slim, slim pickings.) Had a good lunch...

I put up the weekly megapost on [community profile] mobilegames, and March's prompts are up for [community profile] inspiredby. Sunday, I went to bed a smidge early because I just felt kind of off. Like, I had all my usual migraine symptoms minus the actual headache and it was really weird. But felt fine at work later. The weather is changing and the older I get, the more little weather changes smack me in the face like an iron pipe. *sigh*

I didn't get a lot done over the weekend, but I did start to get [community profile] promptmepromptly into shape for a round starting next month. It's very much semi-open-beta at this point and the first round is going to be words-only to see how it goes. (If it goes well, then art/icons/podfic/vids/graphics/curative stuff/everything else I'm not awake enough to list will be welcome in the future. There may be two words-only rounds, one with advertising to big comms in order to do more stress-testing. It's hard to know how well a recurring DW fest will do.)

If you'd like advertise it in your spaces, please do!
