For anyone out there considering teaching in Asia--learn basic Chinese characters!  Kanji in Japan, hanja here in Korea.  You may not be able to speak with them (each language has different pronunciations) but the same characters are more or less the same and are readable in all three places.  And being able to read things like "exit", "large" and the names of cities are easily as useful as knowing "thank you" and "hello"  in the local language.  This and it impresses the locals a lot faster than your crappy accent. ;)

Sailing upwind

If the wind is blowing south, you'd think you couldn't sail north. But you can. You know how to work your sails, what angle to point your ship at...you have a decent ship and a fine crew who knows what they're doing. Without these you might as well be driftwood with leaves, at the mercy of the breezes. With them, it will be hard work, rough seas, and slow going, but you can sail upwind.

A metaphor for small insights gained on a little photo safari.
