Well, I got my computer back from the shop today, and the bad news is they had to replace my hard drive.
The even worse news is that they were only able to recover a handful of files from the old drive, and none of them were the ones I was most hopeful of saving. :-( To wit, all of my fic files are now gone, as are my personal photos, my files of PotC icons and saved fan stories, and any program files I've downloaded/installed since we purchased this computer nine years ago. So basically, I'm rebuilding from scratch.
The (slightly) good news is some of my fanfic WIPs I have on my work computer, since I've been emailing the files to my business addy so I can work on them on my lunch breaks (which I haven't been able to do for a while, since I usually work through lunches). But since I've been doing most of my writing at home, and not at work, anything on my work computer is likely going to be much older edits of the fics, which means I've lost any updates I've made since those versions.
My last hope is to find a place that specializes in data recovery, and see if they're able to retrieve anything more than the repair shop was able to get (the repair shop did give us the old hard drive back, so I can feasibly take it to another place that might have better luck retrieving the "lost" data).
Otherwise, I'll just have to work with the older versions that I have (not quite going back to square one ... more like square three or four), and try my best to recreate whatever new stuff I added since. But right now, I'm sick at heart, knowing I've "lost" months and months of creative work that might not be able to be recreated.
(Oh, to have a photographic memory, right about now!)
Harsh lesson learned ... back up frequently, and store those backup files in a place other than your computer's hard drive, just in case the worst happens! :-(
