My niece asked for some (audio)book recommendations because she is trying to switch to not doomscrolling on her phone before bed, which meant the books also need to not be too terribly dark or sad, so I was like, "you should read Discworld," and she made some skeptical response, and I was like, "no no, don't start at the first book! You won't like it. Start with Wyrd Sisters." And I explained how there were several separate series within the larger series, and this was a good place to start. She was like, "okay, aunt victoria, I'll try it out," and the next morning, she texted me with, "You didn't say it was funny! I'm enjoying it." so that worked out. And also I reread it so it was a win all around. I don't know if she'll stick with it, but I hope so!

Did you know that Vienna Teng has a spreadsheet with links to videos of all the songs she's performed in her "Live@Home" concerts and she made it public (until November 1)? I did not until this morning, but I'm enjoying poking around and listening. It's linked here on her patreon.

With the Stop and Shop website down all week and all online orders cancelled, I turned to Instacart for my groceries yesterday, and it was fine except...somehow, I did not get the eggs I ordered. They were just left out of the delivery though I was charged for them. I unfortunately didn't realize it until much later, and it sent me into a little tizzy, because I had baking plans for this weekend that involved a lot of eggs. Twenty-two eggs to be exact, and I only had 20 in the fridge, hence the inclusion of more in my grocery order. I thought about doing another order - I can always cobble together the bare minimum of stuff to buy, even if it ends up costing more - but then this morning, I was like, I don't need to make 2 different kinds of Swiss meringue buttercream. I can make one batch for the orange cranberry cupcakes, and then do brown sugar/cinnamon cream cheese frosting for the brown sugar cupcakes, and that pivot made everything work out just fine.

I made the orange buttercream this afternoon, and tomorrow I will bake the orange cranberry cupcakes, the brown sugar cupcakes, and a new-to-me recipe for apple cider cupcakes. Then on Monday, I'll make the cream cheese frosting, put it all together, and schlep it to the office on Tuesday. I figured I'd lean into some fall flavors this time around. We'll see how it goes.

For dinner tonight, I made bacon onion flatbreads from a Milk Street recipe (paywalled, so included below the cut) and they are delicious and I have another one that I will have tomorrow night for dinner. The only thing I really did differently was I used one of those garlic and herb cheese spreads instead of crème fraîche. (I ordered the 8 oz package of Alouette and got the 5 oz package of Boursin so it wasn't quite enough to cover both flatbreads, but it was still delicious.)

Today's poem:

Fire

a woman can't survive
by her own breath
               alone
she must know
the voices of mountains
she must recognize
the foreverness of blue sky
she must flow
with the elusive
bodies
of night winds
who will take her
into herself

look at me
i am not a separate woman
i am the continuance
of blue sky
i am the throat
of the mountains
a night wind
who burns
with every breath
she takes

Ugh, daylight savings, why are we still doing this???

Anyway, I got up at my usual workday time instead of sleeping in so I could get the onions in the slow cooker, and I did both the "soak onions in cold water in the fridge for 15 minutes" and wore the stupid onion goggles, and still by the 4th onion my eyes were extremely unhappy with me. *hands* Thankfully I only had 6 onions total, so it all got done, and for dinner I made French onion pasta as planned, and now I have dinner for 3 more days as well. I do love this pasta dish - and I always use bucatini, which is one of my favorite pasta shapes, so it was pleasing all around. Every time I make it after not having made in a while, I'm like, why don't I make this more often!? and then I remember the onion-slicing and how annoying it is. Anyway, definitely recommended for a delicious and easy dinner (except for the onion-slicing). I also made bacon so I have lunch for the week also.

I meant to mention this yesterday and forgot, but The Mountain Goats collaborated with Mary Chapin Carpenter to cover World Party: Put the Message in the Box (don't worry if you only recognize one or two of those names - the song is good!).

In case you haven't listened to it yet: Streets of Minneapolis by Bruce Springsteen.

It's in my bsky feed and my tumblr dash and I saw it here on DW first (in a locked post), so I needed to have it here too.

And since I've been listening to it a lot lately, here's Help Save the Youth of America by Billy Bragg. Unfortunately always timely.

musesfool: starbuck winning all your money (this girl is taking bets)
I did indeed get in bed by 9:30 last night and slept pretty hard. I probably could have slept even more, but 11 hours is a pretty good night!

For some reason, I woke up with Barely Breathing by Duncan Sheik in my head, and when I wondered to [tumblr.com profile] angelgazing whatever happened to him, she said he co-wrote Spring Awakening, which I did not know, so good for him! From one-hit wonder to Tony winner!

On the Mets front, they finally got a centerfielder in Luis Robert Jr. I guess if he can stay healthy, he'll be an upgrade over last year, offensively at least, though I am still a Tyrone Taylor fan for his A+ defense. #better call tyrone

In other sports news, my attempt to get interested in basketball seems to have done serious damage to the Knicks. They have been losing a lot lately. Plus, everyone I mentioned it to was like, don't do that. I didn't realize people in my wider circle felt that way about basketball. I guess there's always the Liberty! I should figure out when that season starts. Or the Sirens for hockey, but I don't think they've been very good either. Just a bad time all round for NY sports, I guess. And it's not like I'm a fair weather fan, though this certainly sounds like it - it's just I'd like to root for a team that isn't completely terrible, you know? As a treat!

On the books front, there is finally cover art and a real blurb for Dungeon Crawler Carl 8: Parade of Horribles, but still no Kindle* or e-book edition, so I broke down and pre-ordered the hardcover. (I can't do audiobooks. I've tried.) I also decided to do a reread of the series, because I've been trying to map out all the various stuff that needs resolving - and it is A LOT - so I wanted it to be fresh in my mind. So at some point there will be a post that is basically me as that Charlie Day-at-the-murder-board meme trying to figure it all out. *hands*

*I realize that I probably need to do a "free trial" of Kindle Unlimited to get the Kindle edition but I do not want to do that at this time. As the release date gets closer, we'll see if a Kindle edition shows up and I end up cancelling the hardcover, as I would prefer not to buy a hardcover tbh. I have all the rest on kindle, which is where I do 99.5% of my book-reading these days.

So anyway, I guess for the Wednesday reading meme, I just finished a reread of book 1 of Dungeon Crawler Carl and started rereading book 2: Carl's Doomsday Scenario. And I will probably read book 3: The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook after that and so on and so forth. *wry*

I just watched that HBO documentary about Billy Joel and though it is long and a little repetitive in some ways, I thought it was well worth watching. I learned a lot that I never knew about him.

In a brief work update, they did finally announce the new CEO on Thursday, but for some reason*, the current board chair refused to give a quote for the press release, so they had the person we think is going to be the new board chair (still a secret for some reason!) give a quote instead.

*now my boss and I are speculating that she had backed a different candidate for the job and is taking it personally that she did not get her way, but that is absolutely just speculation and may be unfair to her. We just can't think of another reason why she's been so weird about the whole thing.

Yesterday was busy with committee meetings, and I logged off at about 4:45 and crashed hard into a two-hour nap, and then slept nine hours when I went back to bed for the night.

I can't believe Thanksgiving is this Thursday. Where did this entire year go?

5 things make a post:

- This New Yorker profile of Costco was super interesting, I thought, as I ordered several pounds of pecans from Costco to make holiday gifts for various co-workers.

- The Giants once again had a lead for most of a game and then lost, plus their rookie QB ended up with a concussion. I texted the family group chat that that should be enough to finally fire Brian Daboll, and sure enough, today he got canned. Woof. What a miserable few seasons it's been. Hopefully whoever the next coach is (and the current interim coach) will protect Dart a little better.

- Will the Rangers ever win a game at MSG this season???

- It's the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, so give the song a listen. It still makes me cry every time I hear it. "Does anyone know where the love of god goes / when the waves turn the minutes to hours?"

- I don't have a fifth thing.

Imagine my excitement at reading this interview with Bob Mould this morning: How Bob Mould rediscovered the great, lost live Husker Du record not because of Hüsker Dü, whom I liked but didn't love, but because he mentions that Sugar reunited. I LOVED SUGAR!!! If I Can't Change Your Mind is 3 minutes of PURE POP PERFECTION and one of my top 5 songs of ALL TIME. Back in the 90s, I saw Bob live solo at least twice (once pressed right up to the stage beneath him and his guitar at...Irving Plaza? I think?), and saw Sugar in concert at least once (maybe twice?). Copper Blue is full of great songs, as is Bob's first solo album, Workbook. (Black Sheets of Rain was also good but less accessible, imo.)

If Sugar actually tours, I might leave the house to see them!

I have other, less fun, work news, but I should probably save it for a locked post sometime later. Sigh.

As I may have mentioned, Baby Miss L loves potatoes, so when I saw a t-shirt on Etsy that said, "Potatoes gonna potate!" around a picture of a potato, I thought, I have to get it for her! Unfortunately, it was only available in neon green, which I did not like the look of. Luckily, many other vendors were also selling t-shirts with pictures of friendly potatoes on them, so I got her this one that says, "Tater tot!"

This morning, I received a series of glamour shots and a video of Baby Miss L thoroughly excited about wearing the t-shirt. It was so great!

I also learned that The Muppets covering Jungle Boogie is one of her current favorite videos. AMAZING!

On all counts, her vibes are immaculate.

Tomorrow, I'm going to a birthday bbq at my brother's, and I'm bringing her the Batman and Robin t-shirts, plus some toddler books about Batman and the Justice League. Hopefully she enjoys them almost as much! (I also recently sent her a Captain America t-shirt, which I believe she wore for the 4th, and I also got pics of her in the Superman dress, with her arms up like she was flying. 😍😍😍)

In other news, I found this review of the new Superman movie really moving. Will I venture out to a theater to see it? Probably not, but I will be very excited to watch it when it makes its way onto HBO in a few months.

So I mentioned that I just finished watching Slow Horses, which so far has 4 seasons of 6 episodes each on Apple TV, with 2 more seasons coming. It stars Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, a super gross old master spy who's been put out to pasture at Slough House instead of retiring. He's in charge of a bunch of screw-ups who have also chosen not to quit, in the hope that someday they may be able to get back to "the Park," i.e., MI5 HQ in London, instead of the ratty old offices at Slough House. We are introduced to Slough House when River Cartwright, an MI5 nepo baby, screws up and gets turfed out to the slow horses. He is such a dumbass and I love him.

Other fantastic characters include Catherine Standish, Lamb's PA, who used to be the PA to the head of MI5 and who is an alcoholic (and Lamb never lets her forget it because he is awful; there is some compassion beneath that awfulness, but there's so much gross crustiness to chip away at to get to it); Louisa Guy, who is mostly competent and probably shouldn't be in Slough House; Diana Taverner, played by Kristin Scott Thomas in ice queen mode, and Sophie Okenedo as her boss. In season 4, we also get James Callis as the most useless bureaucrat Taverner has to deal with, and Hugo Weaving in a guest role.

There is a lot of violence (some of which requires major suspension of disbelief) and quite a bit of morally questionable decision-making, but all leavened with a lot of humor, some fun spycraft, and burgeoning teaminess amongst the slow horses. I recommend it, and I think I might watch it again.

= I told my boss about the horrid party planning meeting and she agreed with me 100%! And then today, we were in a different meeting with the guy from the other department who was present at the party planning meeting and he was like, "what the hell was that?" so I feel vindicated. They better have their act together tomorrow or I am going to make the decision for them.

= I was surprised that the fleecy blanket outpaced everything in my poll, but I think I am going to go with the dog playing cards. They are super cute!

= In case you were wondering, though, there is also a Little Board Book of Pasta, which I immediately ordered for Baby Miss L. It is adorable, just like she is!

= For some unknown reason, yesterday, 3 a.m. Eternal by KLF popped into my head and I shared the link with my niece, who was all of 1 when that song came out, and she was like, "Wtf is this???" and I informed her that it was a big club hit in 1991, when I actually went to clubs! (I didn't even bring up the weird Gregorian chants phase we had in the 90s. There's still time for that!)

= Rangers are on the west coast, which means I get to watch approximately 1 period of hockey tonight before I have to go to bed. Supposedly Chytil is not concussed, which I hope for his sake is true, because if he was, I would think it would be career-ending. Meanwhile, the Rangers played slightly better defense against the Kraken the other night, but their defense overall has been woeful. I will say that Winnipeg looked legit when they played them last week. Be interesting to see if they keep it up.

That is five things, so I guess I will post!

I had an anxiety spiral last night about work and all the stuff that has to get done for this new project, and also the letter from the building mgmt company letting us know that on top of the 10% increase in maintenance they instituted back in the spring, now they are going to be doing a $175 monthly assessment for a year starting in October. I would really like for my raise to come through! But it's unlikely before the end of this month at the earliest. Sigh. As for the work itself, I'm just going to continue to get things done as I can since so much of my anxiety is around stuff I don't control. As per usual. *hands*

Tomorrow, Baby Miss L is having tubes put in her ears. I know it's a common procedure, but please think good thoughts for her! <3

In other news, I think I've mentioned I listen to the classical station while I'm working, and this morning they played the main theme from Superman by John Williams, and it still gives me chills. Just a fantastic piece of music.

My Fringe rewatch continues and knowing now where things are going, they really did seed some stuff in pretty early on. I'd forgotten it was a JAbrams show, at least to start, but it did eventually provide some answers, more than a lot of his other stuff does, at least. And it's definitely a fun ride getting there.

I just hit the first episode of s2, and suddenly there's random Meghan Markle! I'd totally forgotten that. I'm excited to get to some of the best episodes of the show soon!

I am guessing that anyone who's interested has already watched F.D. Signifier's 3-hour long video explainer about the Kendrick Lamar vs Drake thing (I'm What the Culture Feeling (The full story of Kendrick Lamar Vs Drake)) - and if you haven't, I highly recommend it. I am a middle-aged white lady so I was only vaguely familiar with the actual music, but the feud was all over my tumblr dash when it was happening, so it was nice to get some background and context and some meta analysis.

Anyway, he's just released a set of outtakes that didn't make it into the video: 7 hot takes I had to leave out of my Drake video, which I also found worth watching.

I've also watched a bunch of his other videos, and definitely recommend this one about Kanye West, this one about Dave Chappelle, and these two: There's no such thing as a "Black Conservative" and The REAL Faces of Black Conservatism. I have learned a lot.

Oh, and the video about whether "Across the Spiderverse" was copaganda was fascinating. And I still have a few others open in tabs to watch later.

In other news, tomorrow I am going out to my brother's - did I mention this? Anyway, they are on vacation, but my middle niece stayed home because she has exams (or study sessions for exams? the NCLEX?) and she asked me to come out there to keep her company for a couple days, so of course I said I would. So I might be scarce for the rest of the week. *hands*

musesfool: art deco brandy ad (been drinking since half-past three)
The meeting yesterday went well - I was planning to arrive around 3:30, but ended up taking an earlier train (which was late, thus giving me time to catch it) and arrived at 3 pm to find my boss and old boss1 and various other people already there! Assistant L had the food handled, so all I really needed to do was track attendance and take notes. So everyone was mostly happy (we had one complaint that the meeting was in midtown at rush hour, but like, come on).

The meeting ended right on time, and since Assistant L mostly handled everything, I was able to leave pretty quickly, and the walk over to 9th didn't take that long (though I must say, the length of the block between 8th and 9th Avenues is extremely long - it feels longer than even other long avenue blocks). Since our reservation wasn't until 7, I ended up sitting in a coffee shop with an iced cappuccino until about 6:50.

Dinner was lovely, and I had an Aperol spritz for the first time, as recommended by my nieces. It was delicious and felt barely alcoholic at all.

I had already decided to take a car home, given the timing of my train, and it turned out to be a Tesla, which I had never ridden in before yesterday. It was a nice enough car but I don't get the fuss. Also, why do they make it so hard to open the doors?

Anyway, I took today off and I was glad I did. I had a very mellow day - I took a nap, I made some lotion, I watched this week's episode of The Acolyte (( spoilers )).

My sister's surgery went well and she is home and feeling okay.

In other news, apparently Smooth by Santana feat. Rob Thomas is 25 years old!!! And it still rocks. I have listened to it quite a lot today. *g*

What a game last night! Were some of the calls bad? Yeah. Did the Rangers do a little embellishing? Probably. Do I care? Not that much as long as they continue to win! Also, I am not really into all the fighting but when TDA was like, "I'll fight you anytime" to K'Andre Miller, I was filled with the unholy desire for Miller to clean his clock. Ugh. Otoh, it still sits wrong that Brady Skjei is a Cane. (It's also a little weird to be rooting against Georgiev in the Dallas/Colorado series.) Anyway, the thing about OT is that if my team is gonna lose, I'd rather it be within the first five minutes of the OT; if they're going to win, I don't mind it going for a long time, though I was very glad this game ended at a reasonable hour. I did not stay up to see the OT for Stars/Avs.

With the Knicks and Rangers on every other night, and the Knicks playing the Pacers, it really does feel like 1994. 🤞🤞🤞

I think my favorite comment that I read afterwards was someone saying, "Model still says Carolina in 5!" (the model used all season by the Athletic favors the Canes quite a bit because they are analytics darlings and the Rangers are not. I understand that analytics are useful in some ways, but they're not how I engage with sports.)

Anything could happen in Raleigh (I remember last year), but I feel like everyone† is contributing right now, and Igor is being fantastic and that makes them hard to beat.

†Trouba was terrible though. He was decent in game 1, but oy, last night was not good for him.

Today is John Williams' birthday, so WQXR played a few of his scores and there's something to be said for doing spreadsheets while listening to the march from Raiders of the Lost Ark (possibly my favorite movie of all time) or the main theme to Star Wars (my other possible favorite movie of all time, by which I mean ANH). And just for good measure, have the Imperial March as well, in case you haven't heard it in a while.

musesfool: lester bangs on rock'n'roll (music)
I keep thinking of things I want to post and then being too tired to post them. But today I slept in and feel slightly more capable of typing into this box so, here some things that make a post:

= I FaceTimed with Baby Miss L today! She loves FaceTime! <333 My niece is feeling better but now her husband has tested positive, as has my sister, so they are all dealing with that. But Baby Miss L was mostly happy (she did cry a little - on top of covid and an ear infection, she's teething, which is really too much for anyone, let alone a baby, to handle with complete equanimity) and I warned my niece of the various gifts that I've been ordering and shipping directly to her for the baby's birthday and Christmas. We will have to get our heads together to finalize it, but I don't have strong feelings either way. Though I did tell her that anything holiday themed should probably go in the birthday batch so the baby could wear them as seasonally appropriate. Today she had on a pumpkin-and-leaf bedecked romper that said "Happy Autumn!" because even when ill, Baby Miss L is stylin'.

= I have been trying to put together everything I need for the various rounds of cupcake baking that will occur in December: December 1 for Baby Miss L's birthday, December 10-11 for my work holiday party on December 12, and then the Christmas extravaganza on December 22-23.

  • For the baby's birthday, I am waiting on a headcount, but starting with 120 chocolate and 120 vanilla as base numbers, though I'm sure it will be more in the end.
  • For work, and also for gifts for my colleagues, I am probably going to do similar numbers of chocolate and vanilla, plus the (vegan) orange ones I'm testing out later this week - once I know how many that makes, I can figure it out, but right now we're projecting 60 people, so if they each have 4 cupcakes...yeah. Then a dozen each for 7 coworkers in specific (4 of each of the 3 kinds)...
  • And then the usual Christmas baking - chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, mocha, apple cider, and new this year, strawberry.

There's a reason I have a spreadsheet! Each one is thankfully a separate grocery order, plus along with Christmas baking there's the fig cookies (12/19-12/21), so I will be busy.

= Speaking of cupcakes, I started rewatching series 2 of GBBO and was reminded IN THE FIRST EPISODE (CAKE) that they requested cupcakes from the bakers in the very first challenge, and then did a whole history segment on how they came into vogue for aristocratic ladies' tea parties! So I was yet again ENRAGED at Paul dismissing Miranda's cupcakes in the final of season 1. Cupcake Jail for Paul Hollywood! One million years!!!

= In other news, this is of great interest to me: Bridge and Tunnel Boys: Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and the Metropolitan Sound of the American Century by Jim Cullen, though it's expensive enough even on kindle that I will probably just put myself on a library waiting list.

(I am not reading books these days anyway - I don't know why it's so hard! There are so many I want to read! But I start and I just don't...continue, even ones I'm super excited about! Comics are easier - I recently reread Batman: Court of Owls (1 & 2) and now I have Cass's Batgirl run out from the library since I've never read the whole thing, only bits and pieces of it, and I think I mentioned earlier this summer catching up on some Nightwing, which I enjoyed. #everybody loves dick)

= In other music news, I did not think much of the "new" "Beatles" song (this is a thoughtful take on it), but I did get a very annoyed kick out of this ranking of all their songs. I mean, sure, whatever, these things are all subjective, but this guy (Bill Wyman! No, not that Bill Wyman, but it did make me do a doubletake when I saw the byline) is frequently objectively wrong about stuff, imo. *g*

I am not a super-fan by any means, but I did grow up with their music - my dad was a fan and hearing the news about John Lennon's murder is a very vivid memory for me - I was 10, we were off from school that day for a religious holiday (Immaculate Conception). Regardless, these lists are mainly a starting point for conversation/argument, so in that spirit, I guess mission accomplished!

= This week's Loki: ( spoilers ) Unfortunately, I still don't feel any real emotional investment in this show, but it's a fairly fun diversion.

I guess that's 5(+1) things, which make a post. *g*

musesfool: lester bangs on rock'n'roll (music)
I really enjoyed the Taylor Swift movie - I especially enjoyed how much my nieces enjoyed it - and Swift puts on a good show. Did we really need the full 10 minute version of "All Too Well" or as many songs off Midnight at the expense of other eras? Probably not imo, but I realize I am not the target audience, and that is what other people want. And like every concert, there's always going to be songs I like left out in favor of songs I don't know or don't care about. But we did a lot of chair dancing and singing along, even though the theater wasn't that big or full. Also, I feel like it was so polished (possibly because they combined stuff from multiple shows? I am unsure if that's true, but I think I read that) that it didn't have some of the rawer edges you often get with live music. But maybe I am just used to rock bands rather than pop performers. I don't mean I wanted long random solos, because I did not, but I mean the kinds of call and response you get at live shows, or the improvisational singing, or the snippets of covers on a segue from one song to another. This had none of that - it was very polished and choreographed to within an inch of its life.

And I think that it probably works like gangbusters if you are actually in the stadium, but watching it from a remove, it didn't quite hit the mark for me in that way. I mean, I am not a spiritual person at all but the closest thing I've ever found to transcendence is at concerts, where people who are deeply passionate come together to participate in the thing they are deeply passionate about. A good crowd is as important as the performer in the alchemical formula of a great concert.

But this was a concert at a remove. As I said, seeing it with my nieces gave me some small measure of that feeling, and there were moments when I had got chills or even teared up a little (music frequently makes me cry - it's involuntary and I hate when it happens in public), but I was always conscious of it as not just a performance (which every concert, no matter how heartfelt, is) but as a movie, which took it a step further into being prepackaged. So it was an interesting experience.

I don't watch a lot of concert movies, but I was just thinking about the Springsteen on Broadway show that was recorded and shown on Netflix, and that did kind of have that distance but I think a lot of that was ameliorated by the intimacy of the performance. So you're not getting the crowd vibe but you are getting closer into the stage than you would in the theater. And in this movie, you do get views you couldn't possibly get in the stadium, even in the closest few rows. So that was very cool. But it also made me very conscious of being in a theater watching a movie, not being at the concert I was watching.

And I mean, I can't undersell the benefits of 1. not paying $1500 or even $250 to see the concert, not having to be pressed in a crowd entering and exiting a stadium, nor sitting in a parking lot for 45 minutes, waiting to be able to get out onto the road. And not being deafened by the sound, or unable to hear any of the between song patter - all of that is crystal clear in the film. But even in a theater with other fans, chair dancing to songs we love, it didn't quite have the uplifting vibe of a really good in-person show.

If you like Swift's music, I would recommend the movie, but only if you go with other fans. I don't think the experience would work quite as well alone, and I generally don't mind going to the movies alone. I don't do that for concerts, though.

Afterwards, I went to my brother's and spent most of the weekend there. We were supposed to have a nor'easter yesterday, which didn't really materialize outside a lot of rain, and some wind separately today, but there was also a bug situation in my apartment that the exterminator just took care of on Friday and I was looking to be out of the apartment for a little bit after that. I took so much allergy medication and still had hives from the cat, but it was worth it.

And now I'm home and it's back to work tomorrow.

musesfool: a glass of iced coffee with milk (nectar of the gods)
RIP Sinead O'Connor. I hope she's at peace now. The Lion and the Cobra and I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got were in constant rotation on my walkman during my commute in the early 1990s. I saw her in concert once, at the Beacon Theatre, and her voice was just as stunning live as it was on tape.

Work yesterday was good - in addition to my birthday, both associate GCs had birthdays in the last few weeks, so my boss took us all out for lunch. We split a pizza as an appetizer and I had mozzarella in carrozza as my entree. It was very good, though it seemed like our waitress had never been a waitress before? Idk, but she was not good at the job, and she was alone for much of the lunch rush, which seems like a bad way to run your restaurant, since it was also very busy.

Of course, my train was late and then on the subway, we sat in the tunnel for a while, so I didn't arrive in the office until 9:20, which was luckily in time for my 9:30 meeting, but meant I couldn't stop off at Starbucks for an iced latte first. Sigh.

★

I did make coffee granita on Monday night, and this morning I whipped up some whipped cream to have with it. It was so good. I am looking forward to it tomorrow and Friday as well. It's super easy to make and doesn't require any special equipment: Whisk 1/4 cup of sugar* into 2 cups of strong hot coffee, pour it into a shallow metal or glass dish (I used a loaf pan though I have also done it in a pie plate), wait for it to come to room temperature, and then put it in the freezer. After an hour, scrape down the frozen bits around the edges, and return to the freezer. Continue to scrape and stir it up every 20-30 minutes for a couple of hours, until it's fully frozen, then serve.

*I don't take sugar in my coffee, but it's necessary here to keep the liquid from freezing completely smooth and solid. You could probably use liquor instead, since alcohol also inhibits freezing - Kahlua or Bailey's might work, or if you're looking for that full espresso experience, use amaretto or Sambuca - but I don't know how much you'd need. A tablespoon maybe? you'd have to test it out.

musesfool: Kory from Titans (i must confess i still believe)
I'm supposed to go to my sister's tomorrow to help babysit Baby Miss L, but the exterminator - the reason I didn't go today - is being rescheduled (arrggh), so I texted my sister that I could come this afternoon if needed, and she's like, "wait, we may be having other guests" so...I'm waiting.

In the meantime, RIP Tony Bennett. #legends only

In other music news, Gaslight Anthem has anew song out: History Books, featuring Bruce Springsteen!

Yesterday, I watched Queen Charlotte, the Bridgerton prequel on Netflix, and I mostly enjoyed it. India Amarteifio knocks it out of the park as young Charlotte, and Arsema Thomas is fantastic as young Lady Danbury. At least once an episode I rolled my eyes at the show trying to make George III a romantic figure, but despite the tyranny, I did feel bad for him about his mental illness, which may or may not have been bipolar but was portrayed more as some kind of schizophrenia. Despite his mental health issues, he and Charlotte do have a charming romance and were allegedly devoted to each other in real life as well. I also liked that it explained some of the worldbuilding we see in the series proper, but you still can't think too hard about it or it all falls apart. Mainly, the thing I disliked was ( spoiler ) I did love the different portrayals of widowhood and the women who have to live with it in a world where their main value (popping out kids) is long past. And the parallel with Charlotte, who is not actually a widow by may as well be give how little time she and George get to spend together in the narrative present/Regency era. I also enjoyed getting some of Brimsley's backstory, ( spoiler )

So if you're looking for light entertainment on a hot summer weekend, you might enjoy it.

June recs update:

[personal profile] unfitforsociety has been updated for June 2023 with 25 recs in 6 fandoms:

✭ 19 DCU and 1 DCU/Criminal Minds crossover
✭ 2 Ted Lasso
✭ 1 Earthsea, 1 The Old Guard, and 1 Star Wars

✭

And have some fun music links:

= Fall Out Boy's update of We Didn't Start the Fire, which I enjoyed.

= Rick Astley at Glastonbury: Never Gonna Give You Up and There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. Honest to god, who needs Morrissey when Rick Astley is available to sing The Smiths?

✭

I took today off since we had our event last night - there may be a locked post coming with more details about that - so I ended up not doing any of the chores I need to do (laundry, mostly) but I did make this strawberry doughnut recipe as cupcakes and I think they turned out really well. I got exactly 12 standard sized cupcakes, so it would probably make 36 minis. I might have to test it again with strawberry frosting - it could be a new Christmas addition this year, especially since you can make 'em with frozen strawbs. I did a lemon poppyseed one last year, but they were not the best (hence me continuing to try to find a lemon cupcake I really love), and this could replace that. Hmm...

What's Love Got to Do With It

Private Dancer

We Don't Need Another Hero

Better Be Good to Me

I Don't Wanna Fight

My oldest niece and I send each other links to songs we're currently vibing to fairly often, labeled "song of the day," and here was yesterday's song of the day: Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of Dear Prudence.

This evening, I enjoyed Justin Verlander warming up to "Till I Collapse". Hopefully I will enjoy this game as well - that is not guaranteed with how bad the Mets have been lately.

I had a 9:30 am dental appointment this morning and I was afraid I was going to be late so I called to give them a heads up and they tried to tell me to come back at 11 am. Like, I am on my way into the city for this! I am not hanging around for 90 minutes! I made it by 9:40 and had the fastest cleaning I've ever had in my life. The trip home was a lot less fraught, and I was at my desk by 11 am. Normally I try to schedule dental appointments for when I'm in the office, since they're only a few stops away from each other, and back in November, I was scheduled to be in today, but the schedule has undergone multiple revisions and I was not going to be in today. I do have to go in next Tuesday, but next Thursday's meeting was switched to video only so I don't have to schlep in twice in one week.

Anyway, in order to make the 9:30 appt, I had to get up earlier than I do on days when I work from home, so of course I woke up an hour before that and then wondered if I hadn't set the alarm properly or something but it did eventually go off. Sigh. And I went to bed at a reasonable hour and everything! This weather has been good for sleeping, so I'm trying to enjoy it while I can.

musesfool: Mal (i will not speak to lie)
I think I've mentioned I've been listening to WQXR lately while I work at home, and they sometimes play movie scores in addition to the other classical stuff, and today they played the main theme from The Magnificent Seven by Elmer Bernstein, and holy shit, guys, I forgot how good it is. It gave me literal chills, so I've been listening to it on repeat all afternoon.

(It also reminds me of my dad, and today would have been his 88th birthday, so I also got a little teary, but that's just me. I think everybody would get chills. *g*)

In more prosaic news, I got my laundry done (except towels and sheets), so all that's left is the folding and putting away, which I can do while watching tv tonight.

Today's poem:

Descriptions of Heaven and Hell
by Mark Jarman

The wave breaks
And I'm carried into it.
This is hell, I know,
Yet my father laughs,
Chest-deep, proving I'm wrong.
We're safely rooted,
Rocked on his toes.

Nothing irked him more
Than asking, "What is there
Beyond death?"
His theory once was
That love greets you,
And the loveless
Don't know what to say.

Yesterday, as usual on the day before a grocery delivery, I went through my order and refined it - I deleted things that were no longer on sale or which could wait until next week, added a thing or two I'd forgotten earlier etc. This morning, imagine my surprise when all of the new items plus all the deleted items arrived with my delivery. Like, why would I need two bags of arugula?? I deleted the more expensive bag in favor of the one on sale but somehow received both. Also it's stuff like Parmesan cheese and butter, so it's not like I won't use it, but it bumped my grocery bill up fro about $75 (with tip and delivery) to over $100, which I was obviously not expecting. Idk, I guess there was a glitch on the Stop and Shop website?

In what might have been a harbinger of how today was going to go, I woke up at 8:25 am and realized my alarm was not set (it usually goes off at 8:15 on WFH days), so I guess it's good I woke up on my own? I don't even remember turning it off yesterday (as opposed to just turning off the radio but leaving the alarm set, which is what I usually do), but I must have.

When I turned the radio on in lieu of my alarm, it was in the middle of a report on the snow/ice situation that [personal profile] rachelmanija has been dealing with in San Bernadino, along with a resident, but I missed the intro so I don't know if it was you or someone else being interviewed! (It was on CBS NewsRadio 880.)

In other radio-related news, I have been livestreaming WQXR a lot recently while working - sometimes the silence of working from home is oppressive, but classical makes for a nice, unobtrusive background, and it reminds me of my dad. It was his regular listening in the car and at home.

The other day, they played Boléro and dedicated it to people with repetitive jobs (because the drummer plays the same thing throughout the whole piece), and while this isn't the version they played, it's one I like a lot: Wiener Philharmoniker - Maurice Ravel - Bolero - Conductor Gustavo Dudamel. Dudamel is coming to the NY Philharmonic this year, which is pretty cool.

In baseball news, this was a fun read: Here's how Team USA got its superstars to say ‘yes’ (re: participating in the World Baseball Classic).

While I'm a little skeptical of so many Mets being at the WBC, I was glad to hear Matt Harvey had a good outing for Team Italy (!?) yesterday, and it's nice to see all the kids getting a chance to play while the regulars are gone.

For today's January Journal topic, [personal profile] swingandswirl asked: If you could delete one mainstream media movie/book/series/intellectual property from existence, entirely removing it from everyone’s memory and cauterizing the timeline so it cannot reemerge, what would it be?

Since "intellectual property" was included there as a catch-all, I am going to give you my top 5 most hated songs in the universe (in no particular order) - they should all be scourged from my memory and the collective record as well, including all cover versions (I'm sure there are other songs I really hate, but these are evergreen and also what came to mind immediately when I read this question):

- "Wonderful Christmastime" by Paul McCartney
- "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo
- "You're Having My Baby" by Paul Anka
- "25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago
- "Take a Letter, Maria" - I don't know who did this but the music could stay if they write completely new and better lyrics

If you enjoy any of these, I'm so sorry, but you'd get over their disappearance and the universe would be a better place.

In better musical news, I woke up with "Drown" by Smashing Pumpkins in my head so I have been listening to it on repeat all day.

I made a pasta dish for dinner last night that included browned butter and lemon juice served over arugula - so like my favorite tortellini dish (except that also has balsamic vinegar in it) - but this recipe called for browning almond slices in the butter, so I did that, and I did not think they added anything to the dish at all. Maybe some crunch? But I didn't feel that texture was really necessary in a pasta dish. Maybe pine nuts or pistachios would have worked better? I love almonds but their flavor doesn't really stand up to brown butter and lemon, imo. It was tasty, but I feel like adding the almonds was a waste of good nuts.

musesfool: Jason Toddler shows off his new costume to Dick (everybody starts somewhere)
I woke up this morning with Scarborough Fair in my head, which seems somewhat apt for All Saints Day.

Today was the first time it really felt like fall this year, despite the weather still being unseasonably warm. It was the light, or lack of it, or something. Idk.

Why does every update of an app somehow make it worse and less functional? Why? I can't remember the last time I saw an update and thought, "oh, this is so much better!"

The Robin onesie I ordered for the baby came today. It's so cute! Admittedly, it doesn't have a hat with wings, like the Captain America onesie or the Flash onesie, but I am partial to Robin. *g*

This article, and the accompanying video, of Joni Mitchell at the Newport Folk Festival (NYTimes, so possibly paywalled; the video is also here) made me cry a lot. Like, a lot. Every time I thought I was done, no, there was more crying.

I posted the Jedi!Steve story last night:

Star Wars/Captain America; Steve/Bucky, Steve/Peggy; AU; pg; 21,516 words
Steve gave his life to help save the Republic. He's not thrilled to wake up and find the Empire in its place.

If you ever wanted to read about Steve and Bucky in the GFFA, well, now you can. *g*

I slept the sleep of the just last night - out like a light at 11:45 pm and sleeping through until 7:55 am, just 15 minutes before my alarm goes off. So I'm not sure why I'm so tired right now. Anxiety, maybe. The bosses are meeting tomorrow to discuss whether we're going back to the office again starting next week, or if they're going to keep putting it off for a bit.

In other news, this was linked from the NYTimes cooking newsletter and I am having so much 80s nostalgia right now: WLIR/WDRE Screamers/Shrieks of the Week, 1980 - 1997. I don't think it's complete (and it seems to include things I would be surprised were ever played on the station), but it is a fantastic blast from the past.
