Stand up, New Yorkers!!

This morning, I went searching for travel directions on my home computer via http://www.hopstop.com and was horrified to see the new banner across the top that read,
"HopStop will no longer be available starting October 2015"

I know most people here probably use mobile apps (IOS versus Android), but would love to know what you use, or can recommend for someone like me (PC-based). NOTE: I use this for a combination of navigating the subway & bus system as I often travel at least once a week to an unfamiliar destination, but also walk a lot too and have used HopStop.com to map my travels and estimate time.

did anyone see the F train yesterday that had 1/2 the seats re-done? It was funny, half the seats were this weird powder blue, and the other half were still orange....
2nd-Dec-2008 08:37 pm - Turkey Raffle
As much as I dislike the entire concept of the lottery, I was on the subway today and saw an ad for Turkey Raffle that made me laugh and have been having trouble locating an image. I wonder if anyone had been more proactive in taking a picture of it?

The ad basically had a dude with a big mustache and a little turkey next to him. The turkey says: "Sweet mustache. Don't eat me. Play turkey raffle" or something to that effect.

Thanksss!

the fever
Odd question, as most of mine are- but I digress. Which subway line do you think would be the emptiest around 2 PM - 5 PM on a Saturday? What about Sunday mornings around 9 AM - 12 PM?

I want to film something in a subway car but I don't want people getting in my way. And I don't have the few thousand dollars the MTA would charge me to let me use a Subway car for 30 minutes.

Thanks!
12th-Jul-2008 12:41 pm - umm wtf?
has anyone seen these posters on any other trains? my friend and i have each seen this separately on the 1 train. if you go to the website it looks like an absolut vodka ad maybe?

it's hilarious to watch people notice it.

I'm really afraid of closing subway doors. Really. Afraid. One of my biggest fears is that one day I won't stand clear of the closing doors, please! and CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH they eat me. Oh, but only half of me; the other half is hanging out the doors as the train drives away.

Is this possible? Unlike nice, polite elevator doors that instantly back up if they sense a person in their jaws, wrestling with subway doors actually feels like wrestling. Eeep.

I'm planning on adopting a kitten from NY Animal Control and since I have no car, I'll have to bring it on the train with me. My question is, will that hour and a half ride be a problem? I don't want to get fined and I don't want to scare people on the train in case the kitten makes a lot of noise (Although I don't know who would be afraid of a kitten).

And if anyone here has ever adopted from Animal Control, can you tell me about your experience with them?

Bathroom
Yesterday, while riding the train home from work, a little girl standing next to me peed her pants. It was a traumatizing incident for everyone within ten feet of the piss pool. Luckily I grabbed my bag up off the floor just in time.

If you have a subway story that beats this, do tell.

This morning there was a jingly noise as people got on at 68th. A man in a straw hat with an armload of whistles on lanyards. Ah, something new!

A rapping sales pitch for whistles, only a dollar each.

Support a minority, it’s good for the economy…

Everyone on the train started smiling and a man reached into his pocket the check his stash of cash. Nothing but 20s, too bad.

They’re endorsed by our President, George W Bush—the W stands for Whistles!

Some Biblical reasons for whistle use as we pulled out of 59th street and the man with the cash asked How many do you have?

I’ve got about 16 left.

Pass ‘em out! as he handed over a $20.

The man in the straw hat with the armload of whistles on lanyards announced that he would be giving whistles to the ladies—endorsed by the National Organization of Women!

Put it in your pocketbook, even help you stop a crook…

I wanted a whistle but we were at 51st and I had to hurry off the train.

But I still have the smile I got from the man in the straw hat with the armload of whistles on lanyards.
