My story and the best movie of my life

https://www.starwarscelebration.com/

Amazon Prime
Netflix
Disney+
U-NEXT

How I Started Writing About Movies

The Beginning: Finding Solace in the Library
Back in my university days, I often found it hard to keep up with the social energy of those around me. While I had a good circle of friends, there were times when spending every single break together felt exhausting. During those periods, I would retreat to the university library to study. There, I discovered a massive collection of Western films on DVD. I started picking them out one by one, purely based on the design of their spines, and spent my free time immersed in those stories.

My Movie Selection Process
I try to avoid any prior information. I decide whether to watch something based solely on the "vibe" of the poster or thumbnail. I find it much more interesting to let the story surprise me as it unfolds.

During the pandemic, I thought I had just developed a knack for efficiently picking movies on streaming services based on thumbnail aesthetics. But writing this now, I realize I’ve always instinctively chosen films through their visual design.

From Watching to Recording
As my cinema-going habits grew alongside my library visits, I started losing track of what I had already seen. I realized I needed to keep a record. I began using Twitter (now X), writing a brief synopsis in the first half of a tweet and my impressions in the second.

Before I knew it, a year had passed, and I had watched 300 films. Seeing that number was the first time I truly realized, "Oh, I guess I really love movies." However, once I started working, I deleted that account—a decision I later regretted and eventually mentioned to a colleague a few years ago.

My All-Time Favorites

Here are the films that currently sit in my "Life’s Best" list:

  • I Am Sam
The story unfolds to a soundtrack of Beatles covers, which is simply magnificent. I love the color palette. This is the film that made me fall in love with Sean Penn when I was in elementary school.

  • Across the Universe
Not only is the music all Beatles, but the musical's plot itself is inspired by their songs. Growing up listening to the Beatles, this film feels like a sparkling gift to me.

  • C’mon C’mon
The moment "Good Day Sunshine" starts playing and the two characters begin to walk, this black-and-white film feels like it bursts into color. It’s hard to believe this is the same Joaquin Phoenix from Joker. I adore this movie.

  • Amélie
I love the raspberries, the colors—I love everything about it. After I Am Sam, this film showed my younger self just how vibrant and colorful the world of cinema could be. It was a huge shock to my system.

  • Midnight in Paris
Another impactful one. It depicts Paris—a city I’ve visited—so beautifully that it makes me feel like I’m back there every time I watch it.

  • Léon: The Professional
I can only bring myself to watch this from start to finish once every few years. I love it deeply, but it requires a lot of emotional courage to sit through.

  • Baby Driver
The music and the premise are almost "unfairly" good. It’s often described as a "car chase musical," and I couldn't agree more. I think of this film every time I step into an American diner.

  • Doctor Sleep
I used to wonder who on earth would enjoy horror movies, yet here I am putting one in my top list. It’s scary, yes, but I love how it portrays the depths of human nature.

  • Interstellar
I love this film so much that I recently wrote a massive, deep-dive article about it on note. Yet, I’ve only seen it twice. It is even more emotionally taxing to watch than Léon, but it remains one of my absolute favorites.

  • Finding Neverland
This is the story of the author of Peter Pan. While the movie is wonderful, the Broadway musical version is truly spectacular. If you ever have the chance, please go see it.

Why I Started Writing About Movies on note

I had completely forgotten that I used to write 140-character reviews on Twitter until about six months ago. As I briefly mentioned in my post about Princess Mononoke, I had the chance to stay at a traditional old house (kominka) early this summer. I was fascinated by the lifestyle of the woman who owned the house and wondered how she made a living. When we were alone in the kitchen, I plucked up my courage and asked her.

She said to me, "Where is a place you love? Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could live there? Try writing about what you love. If you can earn a living through your writing, you can go anywhere in the world."

"I see," I thought. "I’ve never considered that before." I initially started writing about dance, which I took up after entering the workforce. However, after three or four posts, I hit a wall. I couldn't find the words. When I talked to a senior colleague at work about this, they remembered my old movie reviews and suggested, "Why don't you write about movies?"

That was the start of this note. I began with the recent film The Substance, and I found it so much fun that I struggled to keep the posts short! Now, writing has become an essential part of my daily life.

Why I Share "My Story" Before the Movie

Lately, I always start my posts with a personal story that eventually ties into the film. Whenever I read or hear someone else's story, I find myself wondering, "What kind of person is this?" So, I started writing these introductions as a way of introducing myself and my personality.

Currently, my job involves working with books. I find it boring to just say "I do XYZ for a living," so I share childhood memories or recent events that the movie brought to mind. While this "ability" doesn't always work when I'm feeling down (haha), I truly believe I have a "talent for encountering the perfect movie at the perfect time in my life." Fight Club, which I had put off for the longest time, was a prime example of that.

I want to share those moments of connection on note. I may not have expert knowledge about directors, technical filming backgrounds, or deep academic analysis, but I realized that this—sharing my personal connection to film—is something I can write.

My Typical Post Structure:

  1. A personal story that eventually links to the movie.

  2. A spoiler-free review: A 140-character synopsis (like my old Twitter days) followed by my impressions.

  3. A spoiler-filled review.

  4. Bonus (Omake).

My Current Writing Style and Background

Since I’ve been writing more frequently, I thought about creating a formal self-introduction page. But since I introduce a bit of myself in every post, I’d be happy if you just explored the titles that pique your interest.

  • I watch Western films and TV dramas more often than Japanese ones.

  • Dance used to be my main hobby, but now it’s movies and writing.* As a child, I was so inspired by Shall We Dance? that I used to dance alone in our traditional Japanese room.

English is not my strong suit...
I always watch movies with subtitles, but I cannot speak or write English at all. Thanks to my mother, who insisted on showing me subtitled films from a young age, I can understand spoken English at a child's level, but reading and writing are a struggle.

However, this spring, I had the chance to attend "Star Wars Celebration." I didn't even know what it was at first, but I learned it’s a global fan event that rotates countries like the Olympics—and it was coming to Japan for the first time in 17 years. Even though I’m a relatively new fan, I traveled from Kyoto to Makruhari Messe. I expected a closed, "otaku" community, but what I found was a vast, peaceful, and welcoming world.

I felt a sudden urge to talk to the fans who had traveled from overseas. My lack of English didn't matter anymore. I wanted to know where they were from and how they made their costumes. I couldn't say much, so I focused on taking photos of fans from all

As I mentioned in my post about Fantastic Four, I once exchanged Instagram accounts with someone I met and later chatted with them using AI translation. That was a real "success story" for me. Since I’ve put so much effort into these posts on note, I wanted to provide an English version as well. However, since I can’t read or write English myself, I rely entirely on AI for the translation. Sometimes I fix parts that look obviously wrong, but mostly I post it as it is. I keep doing this in the hope that one day, when I connect with someone from overseas, all this work will have been worth it.

Movie Theater or Streaming?

I’m definitely the type who prefers seeing movies in the theater. I once had a deep regret when I watched Marriage Story at home just because it was available on Netflix. I remember thinking, "I really should have seen this on the big screen..."

Currently, I subscribe to:

  • Amazon Prime

  • Netflix

  • Disney+

  • U-NEXT

Since the pandemic, I’ve returned to the theaters, but I still watch plenty on streaming services. Since I started writing on note, I’d say my viewing is split about 50/50 between the two. Which do you prefer? I make it a rule to watch almost anything recommended to me (except for horror!), so if you have any suggestions, please let me know in the comments or in person!

Movie Reviews Reveal the Soul

Because my motto is to go in "blind" without any prior information, I almost never open other people’s reviews on note before I watch a film. Even while I’m in the middle of writing my own post, I avoid reading other opinions because I don’t want to be influenced by them.

However, once I’ve finished writing, it’s a different story. I search for the movie title on note to read everyone’s thoughts, and I look up information about the actors and the behind-the-scenes history. Right after I finish a post, I often find myself "mass-liking" (hitting the Suki button) everyone else's articles! (haha)

I believe that a person’s true self comes out in their movie reviews—what they liked, what they struggled with, and what specific details they noticed. Even the reason why they chose to watch that particular film reveals their personality. I find empathy and new discoveries in those words. That’s why I don’t think I’ll be able to stop writing movie reviews on note anytime soon.

Bonus (Omake)

I always end my posts with a "Bonus" section. It’s a space for things that have happened since my last post, random thoughts unrelated to the movie, or replies to comments I’ve received.

This time, I want to report how much my social circle and community have changed since I started writing about movies here. To be honest, I never used to talk about my movie impressions with others. I only spoke about them with very close film-loving friends or with...my mother, who has been showing me subtitled films since I was a child, whenever she asked, "Seen anything good lately?"

But interacting with everyone here on note has been so much fun that I’ve actually started showing up at movie circles and meetups. Some are gatherings for fans of specific films, while others are just for people who love cinema in general. It varies, but whereas I used to just go to the theater by myself, my social circle has grown significantly through film, and my world is expanding in ways I never expected.

This is a world I was only able to step into because of all of you who read my posts and interact with me through your likes and comments. I’m truly excited to see what kind of world awaits as I continue to write.

The End
