Honey I Washed The Kid

My Movie-Watching Rules

In my first movie-related piece on Note, "Substance" (たまごと鶏とシャイニング🍳), I briefly touched on this, but... these are my "My Rules" for watching movies and writing about them on Note:
Choosing a Film: I try my best not to input any prior information, judging whether or not to watch a film based solely on the poster or thumbnail image. This way, there are more surprises as I watch, which is more interesting.
When Writing:
When writing spoiler-free reviews, I keep it under 140 characters.
Even when writing reviews with spoilers, I don't write detailed plot summaries.
Before talking about the movie, I write about myself as an introduction, as it will later connect to the film.
I practice these rules every time.
Before the Movie: A Little About Me

Honey I Washed The Kid
It must have been around university that I started soaking in the bath obsessively. I moved house in the last year of junior high school, and the new house had a much bigger bathtub. It was just big enough that my feet, which aren't particularly long, could barely reach the other side.
I felt like I could spend an eternity in there. In fact, I think I brought in drinks and magazines featuring international celebrities and spent as much time as possible in the tub whenever I was home. When my mother was home from work, she would often come to check on me, asking, "Are you still alive?"

Back then, I still had a flip phone. But since junior high, I had begged my grandparents to buy me an iPod Touch, and then in university, I had an iPad Mini. I would put one of those in a Ziploc bag and bring it into the bathroom, enjoying my bath time with music. If I had subscribed to a streaming service back then, I really think I would never have come out.
In high school, part-time jobs were forbidden. When I entered university and started working part-time... when I had more money to spend freely, the first thing I bought was bath products. It was bliss to use soaps and shampoos with my favorite scents and be in a space filled with those scents.

One of my favorites was the scent called "Honey I Washed The Kid" (みつばちマーチ) from LUSH. The official website even describes it as crème brûlée, and the sweet scent fills the air with the warmth of the shower. LUSH is a British company, and back then, there were only a few stores in Japan. When I visited London in England during high school, one of my pleasures was going to the LUSH flagship store. Stepping inside, it was a two-story building unlike anything I had seen in Japan... and the excitement I felt when I got my hands on LUSH solid perfumes and original goods bags that weren't sold in Japan is something I still can't forget.
I loved enjoying the scent in the bath, but I also enjoyed going shopping at the time. It wasn't that I enjoyed talking to the very friendly staff, but that they would cut the soap to the desired weight right in front of me, like a cake. Honey I Washed The Kid really looks like a sweet, so it was a little sad to use up the soap, but the thought of "I can see that cutting process again" made my heart dance.

By the way, when I caught COVID, after my symptoms subsided and I was finally able to go outside, I wandered past a LUSH store. I realized that I couldn't smell that store's scent, and I was really shocked. After passing by several times, I smelled the LUSH scent from afar, even though the store was right in front of me, and I knew my sense of smell had returned.
Even if it's not LUSH, there are soap shops with beautiful cross-sections these days. I get excited and when I see those cross-sections, I want to go home and soak in the tub right away.
The Gap Between Sound and Reality
While I had a luxurious time at my parents' house during university, in the autumn, six months after becoming a working adult, I ran away from home on the anniversary of my father's death.
Looking back now, it was my first year as a working adult. The company I started working at after about a year of internships in university was more difficult than I had imagined. Being shaken on a packed train for over an hour in the morning, being constantly on edge to get a seat on the train when I was exhausted on the way home... and the fact that every day was the same was truly exhausting me.

After a big fight with my mother, I left home. But I had nowhere to go. My boyfriend at the time lived with his parents, and if I consulted him about "I'm thinking of leaving home," he would say, "Let's live together," and I could see myself being treated like a housekeeper. What made it even worse was that my take-home pay at the time was quite low. It was impossible for me to rent a place in Tokyo with that salary. So, I decided to live in a share house. Looking back now, it was an incredible amount of initiative. I fought with my mother, and the next day, I signed a contract for a house and moved in.
At first, it was a women-only share house in Nakameguro. Having been to an all-girls school for 10 years, I was naive and thought it would be easy. But the room was too dirty. I really wonder how I stayed in such a place. I don't remember exactly how long I was there, but... I saw on the internet that there was a vacancy in a share house in Daikanyama with about 20 men and women, and I went to see it right away. It was an instant decision. I was really happy to be able to live in the fashionable Daikanyama.

Because it was Daikanyama, there were models, hairdressers, and various other people living there. I still keep in touch with the residents from that time, and I even get my hair cut by them every time I come to Kansai or go home. However, that's where the good vibes end. The rent I could afford at the time meant that everyone was struggling financially to some extent. What's even more amazing is that, although the men and women were in separate rooms, of course, there were 4 people living in one room (I think it was about 8 tatami mats) with 2 bunk beds. There was one vacancy in my room... so there were 3 of us. The oldest was a female trainer from Rizap, which was expanding at an incredible rate at the time, and she was over 30. The other one didn't say anything specific about what she did, but she worked at a hostess club.
I was too desperate at the time to think about it at all, but now I think about how awful the living situation was... Now, even if I tell acquaintances that I lived in a share house, I don't reveal the existence of the bunk beds.
Still, everyone got along really well, and it was fun to cook in the shared kitchen and eat in the shared living room. We confided in each other, and when the model brother was featured in GU (a clothing store), we went to GU to see him, even though we didn't buy anything. The gap between the sound of Daikanyama and the reality of the living situation was huge, but... there were so many experiences that I wouldn't have gained if I hadn't lived there at that time.

By the way, when people hear about a mixed-gender share house, they often ask, "Were there any romances?" Everyone was desperate to make a living. There was a bond like comrades, but no one had the余裕 (yoyu - leeway/room) for that. But it was definitely one of my youths.
9/11
I wrote a little about this in "Ballerina," but... toys I wanted when I was little after seeing them in commercials. However, my parents had too much sense of style, and they bought me things that were slightly different. One of those things was a set of miniature furniture and appliances imported from overseas instead of the Sylvanian Families red-roofed house that I wanted.

I thought, "It's not the Sylvanian Families red-roofed house at all..." but I thought it was cute and if I could get it, I would take the big package and go home.
I didn't realize it at the time, but in the last year of junior high, when I moved house, I was surprised to see that miniature set again after a long time when it came out of the storage room. There was a sticker on the screen of that small TV, and the image that was showing was... the World Trade Center, which no longer exists.
Along with the surprise, I was instantly transported back to that morning, stunned in front of the TV.

It's a beloved work, and I've read the original novel, but it's one of the few depictions I can bear to watch of a boy who lost his father in 9/11 and his family.
A month before my father passed away, I was in the third grade and about to turn nine. He died at home... I was already there. When I woke up, my father was staring blankly at the TV. My mother was busily preparing breakfast, but she kept pacing back and forth in front of the TV. Sensing the strange atmosphere, I quietly approached, knelt next to my father, and sat in front of the TV. The image of a plane crashing into the first tower instantly froze me. Smoke was rising from the building. The news anchor was saying something, but I couldn't hear a word.
I now understand, after researching, that the actual terrorist attacks happened the night before due to the time difference. The next morning, a compilation of footage was being shown on TV. I think I was watching it as if it were happening in real-time. Soon, footage of another plane crashing into the adjacent tower was shown. And then, unbelievably, the huge buildings collapsed into the ground in a cloud of dust.

At that moment, I felt an emotion that I still can't put into words.
Spoiler-Free Review

A man lives the same repetitive life every day. He's dressed in designer clothes and should be living a fulfilling life, but he struggles with insomnia. That daily routine changes drastically when he meets someone.
The film uses unique cinematic techniques and offers life lessons that feel almost educational. At the same time, the characters are distinct and the film is entertaining. It's a movie packed with various facets. (140 characters)
Spoiler-Filled Review
Two Days After Watching
A poster I've seen countless times in the last 10 years.

According to my usual rule (deciding whether to watch a movie based on the poster's aesthetic), it's a poster from a genre I like. I've seen the poster and thumbnails countless times over the past decade and have often thought about watching it... but I never did. That's because, as I wrote in "My Story," it was a movie my then-boyfriend loved when I ran away from home.
Even though it's a poster I really like, I couldn't bring myself to enjoy it and avoided it. However, recently, someone recommended two special movies to me in the comments on my Note: [Magnolia] and [Se7en]. I briefly touched on [Magnolia] at the beginning of my [The Silence of the Lambs] piece, and [Se7en] towards the end of my [Ballerina] piece, adding a little extra commentary.

This summer, [Se7en] was the movie that kept me glued to the TV in my parents' house, with a glass of barley tea in hand. After watching it, I did some research and was shocked to discover that the director of [Fight Club], which I had avoided for years, was also the director of [Se7en]...
I was torn between wanting to watch it and feeling reluctant. I spent the past week debating whether to watch it or not, but I finally decided to watch it on the train home on Friday.

There were many moments where Tyler's lines and actions resonated with me, and I understood why my then-boyfriend loved the movie. He had survived a major car accident. Even though his presence lingered, it was a movie I needed to watch now. And it was genuinely interesting.
Terror Stemming from Discomfort
One of my rules for watching movies is to avoid seeking out information beforehand. Sometimes, I watch movies without knowing what genre they are. I find it more surprising and interesting, and I've been enjoying this approach lately.
From the title [Fight Club], I thought it would be about fighting. Well, they were fighting, but... As soon as the movie started, I was overcome with an indescribable sense of terror. I regretted it, thinking I had accidentally watched a horror movie that was completely different from what I had imagined from the poster. I was sitting in a chair, but I braced myself so hard from the fear that I pressed my weight deeply into the backrest. I even wondered if I was psychic.
I've always been curious about what this thing in the upper right corner was when I watched movies as a child. I'm glad I finally know what it is! I couldn't verbalize it when I was little, and I couldn't even ask what it was.

But as I kept watching, when Tyler explained his "hobby during work," the reason for the terror I felt was revealed, and I was truly relieved. I was glad it wasn't a hallucination or a psychic experience.
Beauty
For me, horror is all about bizarre obsession. As I wrote in [Substance], my first piece on Note, even beauty and youth can become horrific if you're obsessed enough. However, the environment that fosters that obsession is nothing short of horror itself. Social media must be accelerating that horror, but even [Substance], which doesn't depict any of that, still ends up as horror, which is quite something.

Regarding beauty, I had a truly horrific experience once. It was when I was in middle or high school and saw a product labeled "Placenta." I asked my mother, "What's this?" She gave me a shocking answer: "Isn't it an ingredient from the umbilical cord?" I was speechless and couldn't say anything. "What the...?"

In contrast to Burt's Bees, Tyler's soap-making is equally horrifying, but I'm convinced that his products are luxurious and could be sold in department stores.
A Netflix Movie Showed Me That I Hadn't Noticed Social Media as Promotion
During the pandemic, I was addicted to YouTube and glued to my smartphone all day. What brought me back to my senses was a movie: the Netflix documentary [The Social Dilemma]. I was surprised when I looked it up and saw that it had been nominated for an Emmy Award for documentary.

When I was in college, I used to take magazines into the bath with me. They were filled with overseas celebrities and were a mix of fashion and gossip magazines. When I looked it up now, I found that all the magazines of that genre, which I thought had multiple titles, had been discontinued. Working in the bookstore/publishing industry, I often hear about magazines being discontinued, but... it's a shame. However, you can now find all the information that I used to read in those magazines on online news sites and Instagram.
However, behind that information lies a promotion of consumerism... and [The Social Dilemma] showed me, someone who rarely watches documentaries, that there are many mechanisms in place to make you feel addicted and that you can't live without that content. Former executives from search engines and major social media companies explain in detail what kind of mechanisms they're creating.

I rewatched [The Social Network] after learning that it was also directed by David Fincher. I didn't get it when someone said, "The Spider-Man guy is in it," but... he was totally in it! (Laughs)
Furthermore, when I was reading those magazines, it wasn't because I liked gossip... it was for the fashion. I'm petite, but Japanese fashion magazines only feature girls of average height or model-like figures. And, moreover, it was all fashion that wasn't for petite girls like me. I bought magazines to see the private clothes and red-carpet interviews of Ariana Grande, who was just starting out at the time and had a lot of media exposure.
I constantly looked at the balance of Ariana Grande's (who is petite, but taller than me) fashion and thought, "Maybe I could wear clothes like that..." and bought a lot of fast fashion from overseas brands. That habit didn't go away even after I changed jobs and started earning a stable salary compared to when I was living in a share house.

What made me realize this was... the Netflix original documentary [The Social Dilemma]. It had been several years since I stopped buying clothes. Tyler's words pierced me, even though I had forgotten about that incident.
An Unexpected Share House
The share house I lived in was on one floor of a large apartment building. The rooms were much larger in [Fight Club], but... the floor wasn't rotten, but it was just as dirty, I think.

When I first stayed at Tyler's house, I never imagined that it would turn into a share house. Before I knew it, I was living in a group with a team that was like a cult or a strong military force. I wrote about this a little in my piece on the movie [National Treasure], but it reminded me of the chefs who lived and worked at traditional Japanese restaurants.

In that bizarre scene, I remembered the fun and friendly life I had in the share house... and even though I was nervous about what would happen next, I felt a sense of familiarity with the scene.
If Your Driver's License Was Pinned to the Door
Like the guy who dreams of becoming a veterinarian, if Tyler held a gun to your head and pinned your driver's license to the door, what would you do?

I recently took my driver's license out ofmy card case, and my hands trembled as I remembered this scene.

Do you see that door, visible for just a moment, as a symbol of those who have experienced terror, or as a sign of those lucky enough to have gained a true future?
It was during this scene that I wanted to pat myself on the back for deciding to watch this movie on the train. You could die in a matter of seconds. That's true for everyone. I didn't even know the word "terrorism" back then... Japan is said to be peaceful and safe, but you never know what might happen, where, or when.
Even if you're not involved in a major accident, your heart could stop... If you knew how long you had to live...

[Gattaca] was recommended to me by AI after watching [Fight Club]. Maybe it was because I wasn't expecting much, but it was interesting. It made me feel like I could achieve even a big dream like becoming an astronaut if I really put my mind to it.
What's the first thing that comes to mind as something you should do right now?
A High-Rise Building
I started dating the "reason I had been putting off watching this movie" in the observation room of a high-rise building in Tokyo. I won't go into specifics, but... At the end of our relationship, he cast a curse on me that I couldn't escape. I was so cursed that I even bought the body soap he used. I know it's creepy... But I'm proud of myself for growing to the point where I can analyze how crazy I was and put it into words.

I once discussed why drinking parties are so boring. We concluded that it was because people don't self-disclose. In the process, I remembered how I only listened to the stories of my bosses, seniors, and clients, without talking about myself, and all I could think was, "I want to go home."
I don't know why, but I suddenly started writing this and wondered, "What is 'loving'?"
It includes the feeling of accepting and respecting the other person as they are.
I asked Google, in hiragana, "What does 'aisuru' mean?"
Accepting each other as they are, like Tyler and the protagonist... That's what I realized loving is. I'm truly happy that so many people are reading my pieces, written as "My Story," which are about the real me.

When I saw the last scene of this movie, I remembered myself in a high-rise building with my then-boyfriend, about 10 years ago. The ending of this movie wasn't a sad reminder of the "blank-faced me" who watched the news in the morning as a child... I was finally able to accept the two of us as we were back then and put it in the past. Even though I had avoided this movie for so long... It was only because I watched it now that it had this ending for me. Watching the last scene, I felt from the bottom of my heart that "[Fight Club]" was a good movie.
Bonus
Overseas Dramas I Always Wanted to Watch But Never Did
In my previous piece, I wrote about movies featuring dogs. However, "the overseas dramas I love" made up the majority of it. That would be [This Is Us].

Also, I had been debating whether to watch [Fight Club], which I wrote about this time, for 10 years. Similarly, on Amazon Prime, which I started watching for long periods of time during the pandemic, I was always curious about [The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel], but for some reason, I never watched it.

I don't know how many times I've seen this thumbnail, as it's been on my watchlist forever...
Recently, it happened to pop up in an Instagram reel, and I found it so interesting that AI started recommending stand-up comedy to me. I heard that Milo Ventimiglia, who starred in [The Art of Racing in the Rain], appears in a few episodes of [Mrs. Maisel], so I started watching it. At first, I thought it was just okay, but... From season 2, I was incredibly drawn in. I already knew about stand-up, and I loved the costumes like in [Populaire]... But that wasn't what attracted me. In my piece on [The Silence of the Lambs], I mentioned Florence as a city I'd like to live in someday... But the next city I'd like to live in is Paris. In season 2, the streets of Paris are on full display, like in [Emily in Paris].

But... Sorry... I gave up after one episode, so I can't write about it in detail. I hope I can watch [Emily in Paris], [Fight Club], and [Mrs. Maisel] properly someday...
And what surprised me even more was that the protagonist finds joy in doing stand-up comedy, a style of self-disclosure... And the mother, who drastically changes her life, living in a communal kitchen, if not a share house like I lived in Paris. I couldn't help but see myself in them.

By the way, the father is played by the guy from [Monk], as an eccentric college professor.
And what surprised me even more as I continued watching was that Randall from [This Is Us] appears in a few episodes, singing... Or rather, it should be said that it's the guy from [Black Panther]... By the way, [Paradise], the overseas drama starring Sterling K. Brown, is so interesting that it's worth watching.

[The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel] is in season 3... So I'm looking forward to watching more.
9/11
It's been 24 years since that morning when I was 8 years old and stunned... But I still remember it like it was yesterday.

When this day comes, I remember 2001. However, after becoming a working adult, it became the anniversary of my grandfather's death, who passed away when I was a senior in college and was cremated three days later. My grandfather appears often in my writing, along with my mother and father... I wrote mainly about "Grandfather's Story" in my piece on [Apocalypse Now].
When I wrote that piece, I repeatedly recalled my grandfather's profile as he told the story of his time during the war, which he only did once. After telling the story, my grandfather said to me, "I want you to write this story down someday." I couldn't fulfill his wish to have him read it himself... But I feel like he's watching me from somewhere, diligently writing on Note.
A chef who loved beef tongue, he would buy a whole one from somewhere if I said I wanted to eat it... And he would prepare beef tongue stew in the home kitchen. When we went to a restaurant, he would say, "This restaurant's menu is..." "This restaurant's floor is run by this many people..." Whenever I go to a restaurant, I remember my grandfather's joyful expression... And when I eat Java curry at my beloved Royal Host, I always remember my grandfather's face as he happily analyzed, "This ingredient must be used..."

No matter how hot it is every year, on September 11th, I feel that autumn is just around the corner when I walk the night streets. Today at work, we were in the library and talked about how it was September 11th. How did you spend your September 11th?
