Bound to the Blue Sky

Chapter 1: An Unfamiliar Addressee and an Old Empty Box

The old wooden house had quietly kept time across three eras: Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa. Kiyo, now eighty-five years old, was beginning to organize the home she had lived in for so many years, with the help of her granddaughter, Misaki.

Deep in the back of a chest of drawers, from a drawer that had not been opened in decades, they found an old, empty yellow caramel box—a brand that had been highly popular in the late 1950s. Beneath it lay a Japanese paper envelope, with the name "Mrs. Yoko Hoshino" written in Kiyo’s neat, elegant handwriting.

Inside the envelope was a twice-folded letter and a faded ticket stub for a classic European romance movie. Yet, the name "Yoko Hoshino" did not immediately ring a bell for Kiyo. With the sound of a modern news broadcast playing on the LCD television in the background, Kiyo stared at the faded box and began to slowly pull at the threads of her sepia-toned memory.
