Saturday voted and got a mammogram
24 Oct 2026 05:15 pmFirst of all? I checked in online several days prior - and filled out and signed five different forms.
Is that enough? Of course not. ( Read more... ) Got upstairs. Headed to the toilet. Came out. Noticed no one was there. Another woman popped up. She was an older African-American woman (not Caribbean), who had gotten there early for an 8:45 exam. She didn't understand why she had to still have one, since she was 70. I informed her that no, you can't age opt-out of mammograms. Cancer doesn't care - it can affect you at any age. In fact they had to advocate to have them earlier. Also everybody can get it, it's not gender specific. Men can get it. Anyone who has breasts regardless of size can get it.

The breast exam itself was uneventful. In and out. ( Read more... )
After that, I grabbed the train at Bergen, took it to Jay, got out, went up the steps, then down the steps, and took the F back to Church. (Due to track work the F to Church is skipping Bergen through 4th and 9th Street, stops at 7th, then skips 15th-Church, gets off at Church, then skips to 18th, and then to Kings Highway.) Got off at Abermerle end of the station, walked up to 5th Street and Caton, and stood in line to vote.
( voting )
Gifts for voting:
( they give you a sticker and a free pen )
On the way home, I saw a sign for an apartment rental completely in Bengali. (How do I know? I see the language in the signs of stores surrounding the subway station at Church Avenue.)
( Apt sign in Bengali on a tree )
And on the sidewalk up to the voting place..
( the Fuck ICE sign on the sidewalk )
And also lots of Halloween Decorations - no one does Halloween Decorations like NYC.
( a black cat scouting the street about to pounce )
( one house went all out )
New York's Jewish Community not only lives in harmony with the Islamic Community - they host music events at the Jewish Community Center.
( sign advertising an Islamic music event at the Flatbush Jewish Community Center )
( the Flatbush Jewish Community Center down the block from my apartment in Kensington Brooklyn (originally just Flatbush) )
And finally a garden on the way to the voting spot.

All in all, a productive morning. Then I came home, surfed the net, ate lunch (pumpkin bisque and a roll - which I of course ruined by eating the gluten free brownie with whipped cream for a snack, and a protein oatmeal bite, and chocolate - my weakness is sigh, chocolate and sweets), watched Avengers Age of Ultron (which drags in the middle - pacing is a problem in that movie), napped while attempting to watch Vision Quest episode 3 (not it's fault - I was tired).

Friday is just tired...
23 Oct 2026 07:09 pmGenerally speaking, this is a personal thing, and people's mileage varies.
There's also a lot of variables at play. It depends on what the artist did, who they did it to, if they are still doing it, if they paid for it, how long ago it happened, and if whatever it was that happened happened as a direct result of the art or in the process of creating the art.
This of course involves work that I've not seen, read or heard yet, or didn't see, read or hear prior to the action or wasn't aware the action was occurring when I saw, read or heard it.
Examples?

2. Work is work. I spent a lot of time doing something that needless to say was headache inducing. But it was a lovely day, if a might bit chilly - lows in the 40sF, highs in 50sF. I wore a jacket over a sweater and was fine. Took a walk around the piers near Battery Park, watched the boats, stood in the sun, and favored my knee a bit on the way back.
3. Tomorrow, I have to get a mammogram - the annual physical mammogram. ( Read more... )
4. A bit of good news? They didn't find any more tumors (cancerous or otherwise) in Sisinlaw. The CAT scan came back negative - well except for the one tumor they are removing. But there's nothing else but that one. We are very relieved.
5. Mother: Do you remember Dave Mannverick.
Me: No, why?

The lovely thing about getting older? Is I forget stuff.
I like forgetting stuff. I just wish I had more control over it - ie. "I don't like that particular memory - I know let's delete it - gone now."
They did a movie about that once? ( Read more... )
5. I should do meme questions...
Question a Day Meme - October
20. Today is International Chefâs Day (created in 2004 by esteemed chef Dr Bill Gallagher) and is focused on educating children around the world about the importance of eating healthy, promoting the career of chefs and helping change local communities. What was the last thing you made from scratch to eat?
A salad
21. Itâs International Infection Week â we all got into the habit of carrying around some hand sanitiser back in the C19 days. Do you still do that?
Yes. I live in NYC? Although I don't always use it? But I have a ton of it. I have it at work. I have it in my bag. It's NYC?
22. Have you ever seen a FabergÃĐ egg?
Yes. Once in a museum, and often in pictures. I've only a vague memory of it.
23. Michael Crichton was born on this day in 1942. Have you read any of his novels (e.g. Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, The Great Train Robbery) or seen anything he screenwrote or produced (ER, Twister, Looker)?
Yes. I had friends who loved his writing and rec'd it. So I've read quite a few - borrowed.
Read: Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, Rising Sun, Timeline (I only remember Jurassic Park, Andromeda Strain, and Rising Sun)
Movies adapted from his books that I've seen: Rising Sun, Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, Disclosure, The Great Train Robbery
Television series and films he wrote? ER, Twister
Remember and Recommend? Andromeda Strain (it's excellent), Jurassic Park, ER and Twister
Rising Sun and Disclosure probably doesn't date well. And Timeline was horrible.
Crichton fell out of favor due to the fact that he didn't believe the science behind climate change.

DW features: Comment tracking, Custom circles, RSS feeds and replying from email
21 Oct 2026 01:49 pmComment Tracking:
My personal favorite--I consider it the secret sauce of Dreamwidth (and LJ before it)--post tracking! You can use this to get notified when your favorite bloggers make new posts. But you can also CRUCIALLY use it to get notified when people leave new comments on a post you like.
So if you got dug in on a cool conversation in the comments, you can turn that on and get notifications whenever somebody leaves another reply. This lets you stay in the conversation without keeping the post open in a browser window or something. You can add a blog or post to your tracking at any time using the little bell/track this icon at the bottom of each post. You can manage your post tracking in Account Settings > Notification tab. (Also the place to go to adjust your notification settings generally.)
Create Custom Access Circles & Custom Reading Pages:
Another super useful trick, if you're somebody who likes privacy and the ability to lock your posts to certain users, is the ability to create custom access circles. On DW, you always have the ability to set posts to public, private or 'access locked' (this means people you have followed/friended). But you can also create custom access lists! So perhaps you have one for 'besties I trust with information about my mental health.' Or one for 'beta readers for my rough drafts' or 'people who opted into my obsessive posting about kpop.' You create and manage these Custom Access Groups or Custom Circles in your Account Settings > Manage Circles. Create and name one, and then add the people you want in it. Or remove people who you've blog-divorced.
As a bonus, a Circle also includes a custom reading page. So along with using them for custom blog post access, you can also use them to create specialty reading pages--maybe 'people who write weird fic,' or 'my fiber arts friends.' AND you can set those reading pages to be public or private, so that if you don't want people to know you have a weird fic reading page, you can hide it.
Subscribing to RSS feeds or, Did you know you can follow Tumblr blogs from your DW reading page?
Another super cool one: You can add RSS feeds to your Dreamwidth reading page. So you can follow people who post on Tumblr or Twitter or Bluesky. You can follow people's personal off-site blogs. You can follow news feeds from various sites--maybe you're into AP's Finance section or you want to be able to track new fics posted to your favorite AO3 fandoms. Here's the how-to of creating and following RSS/Atom feeds on your Dreamwidth. (Edit: now with 100% more actual link!)
Post to Dreamwidth via email
In your Account Settings > Mobile, you can set up the ability to send emails to Dreamwidth to make posts or reply to comments. Nice if you don't feel like logging in. If you're like me and you lurk in your email a lot, you can have DW notifications set to send you emails as post or comment notifications and then reply to them straight from email.

Happy Birthday

Dear Yulewriter
21 Oct 2026 07:59 amThank you so much for writing me a story. Write something that makes you happy, and it will make me happy.
In general I am a big fan of chosen family, happy endings, people being good at things, people helping each other be better together than they were apart, theology of all kinds, wit and banter, and kindness. I'm happy with anything (any situation, any rating) that feels right to you given the characters at hand. I'm open to AUs or to going deeper into the worldbuilding of any of these canons.
Please, no betrayal or unquenchable grief or people being awful to each other or despair. There's enough of that in RL (especially these last few years.) On Yuletide morning I want something that makes me smile. Thank you kindly.
Most of this note is my standard Dear Yulewriter letter -- these are the things I've been saying year after year, and I've been doing Yuletide since it began! but these last few years I've been really struck by the extent to which I want to see these characters get to experience joy. Maybe because the world has been difficult, in a variety of ways, for the last several years in a row? Anyway: this is just to say, thank you for figuring out how to bring these characters some sweetness.
In closing: yay Yuletide! Yay you! Thank you so much!
There's nothing below the cut that wasn't also in my Yuletide sign-up, but I include my requests here for anyone who's curious or maybe wants to write an extra treat.

20 Oct 2026 08:48 pm... I was recovering from 54 hours of labor, and my son was recovering from his first tough job - the aforementioned 54 hours of labor.
We both labored hard over the next few decades to be mother and son. It got tough at certain points, with a lot of yelling and tears.
But we also laughed hard together, and listened to music together, and loved anime together, and appreciated surreal humor together.
I watched him make music as a natural talent, write for and perform in radio plays, bring people to tears of laughter in those plays, and also in traditional theater. I watched as he worked through his own troubles and come out on the other side. I watched him learn how to ask for help, and how to take criticism and own his mistakes, and fall down and get back up.
I rejoiced when he married Emily, my lovely daughter-in-law, I missed him when they headed out to Seattle eight-plus years ago, and rejoiced again when they came home to the Midwest, to Chicago.
Today, Andy has two sons of his own, and he is as good a father as his dad was and is. I am so very proud of him.
Happy Birthday, Andrew Louis MacNeill Berlien. You make the world so much brighter.

Twitter keeps asking...
What is your favorite television show, in various guises - with the caveat that it can't be Breaking Bad, The Wire, Sopranoes, Game of Thrones, The Office, Mad Men...
And with cheeky thrill, I state: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Mainly because all the other shows (which you can't state) are so fulled with testosterone, I almost gag on it. I wouldn't have picked any of them anyhow? Well maybe the Wire - except I have no interest in rewatching it?
While Buffy is a comfort show that I've rewatched about 50 times.
Also Buffy had game-changing episodes - that changed television as an art form.
The other thing those other shows have in common is they focused on anti-heroes. Male anti-heroes. Not something I have any interest in rewatching.
***
Speaking of comfort rewatches...I'm rewatching the MCU films out of order, although some in order. Vision Quest kind of inspired me. I rewatched "The Avengers" over two days, because I kept getting interrupted. ( Read more... )
Also considering a Star Wars comfort rewatch and dive into Star Wars content.

Work has gotten mildly busy again. I keep trying to delete files or find files I can delete to free up disc space, because it keeps telling me that if I don't - it can't update my computer with vital security patches. It's annoying. I may have to call them.
And the weather keeps jumping between 38-74 degrees F. It's in the 30s in the morning, and 70 by afternoon. Makes it hard to figure out what to wear to work each day? I've been doing layers. It is clear though, pretty clear blue skies.

20 Oct 2026 10:37 amOn DW, post tagging works differently than more modern platforms. Here, your tag archive is easily accessible to you and others, and manageable. Check out my list. (I made those nested ones by using tags fandom: wod and fandom: temeraire--the system understands that's actually two nested tags.)
You can even display them as a widget in your blog's sidebar, like I did on mine:
The post creation module also makes it very easy to review and select the tags you want to apply to any given post. So if you have categories you want to keep organized, such as 'my art' or 'my fic' or 'book recs,' apply them consistently and you can end up with a premade library. Which, yes, you can link to. Here's my 'dreamwidth' tag.
How to @ a user or community
Shows like e.g.
How to do that text box thing I just did
How to make linkable text
Most platforms make this easy to do these days, but hey, just in case you want to do it by hand and you don't know how:
And it shows like this: Here I'm linking to The text I want to be visible.
How to add a read-more cut
And here's how it comes out.
( Your cut will look like this )
( In fact, you can have multiple cuts in a single post, if desired! )
Note that this does automatically start the cut-text on a new line. If you want to hide or black out a spoiler or potentially triggering text in the middle of a paragraph, it doesn't work well for that purpose.

Sometimes I miss the old Windows Operating systems, which seemingly had less updates.

It's cooler here? In the low 50s, dipping into the 40s at night, and the upper fifties to mid-sixties during the day. Jacket weather. And alas the radiators are on again. Although not too bad. I had them turn off the one in my bedroom. I have a radiator and a pipe, both get hot, one had to be turned off. It still gets a little warm but not overtly so.
Pretty day though. Lots of blue sky. I took a walk, ran across a young film documentarian on the piers, while snapping my own shots with my iphone. He had a complicated and professional camera.
I watched the boats glide on by. They were moving faster than I was.

One of which appeared to be a privately owned fishing boat, staked out in the middle of the harbor.

And took time to look at the flowers. (Some not pictured, had a lot of honey bees and small butterflies.)

Television Review
I finished East of Eden - the most recent adaptation. I've seen three and read the book. I recommend the book - mainly because it is broader in scope and doesn't just focus on the tragic Trask family. There's the Hamiltons, Lee, and various other side characters that are not featured in either the mini-serieses or the original Elia Kazan/James Dean film.
This adaptation is fairly similar to the 1981 version, except in some respects the casting is slightly better for the leads, also Florence Pugh plays Cathy with a touch more vulnerability than Jane Seymour did, and Cathy is written as far more sympathetic. Her sociopathic behavior is partially explained by a history of abuse, and a dark passage in her childhood, that is alluded to, but unexplained. This is quite different than the other versions, and the book - in that Cathy is present as a sociopath without much if any explanation.
Unlike others who have reviewed this mini-series, I found Adam to be for the most part unlikeable. ( spoilers lie within )

Dear ASpecEx Author
18 Oct 2026 03:15 pmHi!
This letter is currently a WIP - working on it as I go!
General comment: I would much rather read a fic you enjoyed writing than something you hated but felt obliged to write. As such, as long as you stay far away from my DNWs and write something belonging to one of my tags, I'll be filled with joy! Any other details in this letter are strictly optional and provided in case they offer some ideas or inspiration.
Have fun writing!

( Aspec thoughts )
( Sex/kink/etc )
Specific fandom thoughts
Under each of these cuts I'm going to list some ideas I like. These are intended to offer inspiration if you're feeling light on ideas - if you're not, feel free to ignore completely! I'm also going to maybe ramble about why I particularly like these pairings/characters. Again, intended for inspiration purposes, not as a straitjacket.
