Apparently it's a new non-profit advocacy group for fanfic writers. They plan to make an IRS and OTS recognized Non profit agency which will provide a non-commercial web archieve to host fanfiction, create a academic journal to review fanfic, and provide legal defense for fanfic writers.
Sounds rather on the surface like Fanlib... except there are a few key differences.
The first is that it's being run by amongst others Naomi Novik, a best selling author and unrepentant fanfic writer, as well as a slew of university professors. Their position is that "Transformative Literature" should be legal under fair use laws. Secondly, they are all women, and very aware that fanfic writing as a genre is done primarily by women. The last is they don't plan on making a profit on fanfic writers works.
So... will this turn into a huge debacle full of anxious hair tearing and cries of "they are going to ruin fandom!" or will it turn into something people embrace ... who knows.
