++ I watched V/H/S/Mixtape, the newest installment of the V/H/S franchise that was recently released this month. Honestly, I'm unsure how to feel about it. Because while it wasn't the greatest installment, I don't think it was all that bad either, although I understand the mixed reactions to it. Ultimately, ( smallish spoilers ) I did like some of the segments (one that was like a more demented "Smile Time" from Angel, the sensory deprivation room, and the "Death Tone" segment were my favorites), but while I liked the narrative concept it wasn't overall cohesive enough throughout, editing wise, to stick the landing, in my opinion.

Nevertheless, V/H/S is a franchise is meant to be fun and entertaining with interesting concepts featuring short horror movies fitting a particular theme. Not all of them are going to be winners, but they all have at least a segment or two worthwhile to watch, and that's all I need. I'm curious about the installment that'll be released next year.

++ There's news that Halloweentown 5 is going to be in the works, and it makes me have a lot of mixed feelings of apprehension and hopefulness. Every single time they try to do another sequel after so many years from an original IP they tend to not really do well. However, considering how the franchise fell off with the atrocity of the fourth film, if done right they can redeem themselves especially if they bring back Kimberly J. Brown as Marnie, who they shamelessly replaced in that fourth film without her knowledge. That is, of course, if they truly want to do justice to the franchise, especially by honoring Debbie Reynolds' legacy in them, and not just be another pointless cash grab for nostalgia, which unfortunately so many of these sequels tend to be even with the original cast agreeing to be involved. I don't have much faith in Disney or anyone else in the industry right now. If this had happened over a decade ago, perhaps I would be a little more optimistic, but at this point I'm just very tired of seeing good potential go to waste.

With all that being said, my idea for this fifth sequel would be: ignore the fourth movie entirely, have Kimberly J. Brown return as Marnie (and the rest of the original cast as they can), Billie Lourd to play a young Aggie Cromwell, time travel being a factor (either Marnie time travels to the past or young Aggie travels to the future), either Daniel Kountz returns as Kal or plays an ancestor of Kalabar, which would make for a good continuation of Kalabar's Revenge. This is just my personal wish, it obviously will not happen this way but in my mind, as a fan, it would be a great way to bring everything back full circle.

I don't have the energy for much right now. But inspired by [personal profile] senmut I thought I'd share a couple of playlists I've made public/unlisted on YouTube that have spooky season kinds of music.

Halloween 2026
Vampire Season but it's 199x
DA: Blood Mage
DA: Nehalenni
Lucifer
There's a Beast; Let It Run

Some of these are fandom based, some are just me putting music together to fit a vibe for one reason or another. But hopefully you find something on one or more of these you'll enjoy.

In the comments, please tell me what you're listening to for Spooky Season. <3

1. How often do you attend live theater performances?
Once or twice a year.

2. Local community theater or professional theater productions?
Almost always professional.

3. Which do you prefer: dramas or musicals?
I don’t like musicals, so answering the question strictly I prefer dramas. However, I adore opera, and a good comedy too.

4. Have you ever participated in a theatrical production, whether acting, singing or tech?
I acted in local community theatre groups between the ages 14 to 22. I was never particularly good at that, though. And I designed and made costumes for local community theatre and opera groups between the ages 21 to 31. I was good at that, but decided I wanted to sew historical clothes for myself instead, which is what I have done since then for a hobby.

5. What was the last play or other staged production you attended?
Amadeus by Peter Shaffer, 3 weeks ago. It was an absolutely amazing production, easily the best performance I have ever seen.

Feeling moderately cursed this year. Halfway through watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time, and Anthony Stewart Head dies. Halfway through a first play of Dragon Age 2, and the entirety of BioWare dies.

The writing's been on the wall in their case for long enough that "grief" isn't exactly the feeling. It's very disappointing though. Mass Effect 2 will always hold a special place as my first RPG.

There was a cheap front-row ticket available for The Play That Goes Wrong on Saturday.

I cannot do this, I thought. I saw this play less than a week ago. I cannot possibly afford to get into the habit of seeing this play every week.

So I did the sensible, responsible thing: I begged my housemates to buy the ticket instead, so I wouldn't be able to. Tem picked it up, went to the show and had a good time! I enjoyed hearing about xyr experiences afterwards.

Tem had brought a feathery crow-shaped handbag to the theatre. There's a bit before the show begins where the character of Trevor asks the audience whether they've seen a dog, Winston, who's expected to star in the play. Apparently, the exchange between Trevor and Tem went something like this:

Tem: Is the dog still missing?
Trevor: (pointing at Tem's crow bag) What's that?
Tem: It's a crow! Her name's Lenore.
Trevor: That's brilliant, that is.
Tem: Maybe she could play the dog?
Trevor: She could be the understudy? Maybe you could voice her. Can you bark?

When Tem was telling us about this:

Tem: So I started barking, right there in the theatre. Which is not something I usually do.
(Rei starts snickering.)
Rei: You did petplay with Trevor.
Tem: I... yes, I suppose I did do petplay with Trevor. I barked in front of a theatre of people just because a man told me to. (pointing aggressively at me) Put that on your Dreamwidth, Riona.

Afterwards, both Robert's actor and Trevor agreed that, if they'd used Tem's crow in place of the missing dog, it would have saved the play.

A small child in Tem's front row apparently took the missing dog VERY SERIOUSLY. She checked under everyone's seats and asked, 'Has anyone checked backstage?' When she asked Chris how the search for the dog was going, his response was 'The dog's lost? Oh, Christ.'

The same child also very sincerely asked 'Are you okay?' whenever someone was hurt in the play. Which is cute! Although it does sound like she had a very concerning afternoon at the theatre.

After Tem had regaled us with xyr theatrical adventures:

Me: By the way, I'm going to be out on Wednesday evening.
Tem: Oh, what are you doing?
Me: N-normal things.
(pause)
Tem: Are you going to The Play That Goes Wrong again?
Me: ...maybe.
Tem: Riona! I went to the theatre so you wouldn't have to, and then I came back to find you'd bought more theatre tickets while I was at the theatre! So there was no point to it at all! Why did I even go to the theatre? Just to 'have a good time'??

So, yes, I went to see The Play That Goes Wrong for the fourth time yesterday. I'm an embarrassment.

I'd brought a friend of mine, Fedz, who was seeing the show for the first time. 'This is incredibly stupid,' he commented in the interval, 'and I love it.'

( The Play That Goes Wrong, 21 October 2026. )

I thought at first, getting into a theatre fandom, that I was lucky to live in London. I have now realised that it is, in fact, a curse. The Play That Goes Wrong is on almost every day! Counting matinÃĐes, I could see this play up to eight times per week! It would bankrupt me, obviously, but it is tantalisingly possible.

Challenge 319:
POPULARITY
Who doesn’t want to be popular?

Well, quite a lot of people, it turns out! Being well-liked, whether that’s by your classmates, your coworkers, or the general public, has its perks, but it’s not all fun and games. There’s a lot of pressure in needing to be someone that everyone can like, and you might find yourself hiding important parts of yourself. On the other hand, being unpopular has some serious downsides, too. Being liked by everyone might come with pressure, but being overlooked – or worse, disliked – by everyone can make your life miserable, even if no one acts on it.

Are your characters popular (in whatever setting they’re in)? How do they feel about that?

Write a story about popularity.

BONUS GOAL: “You don’t know what it’s like.”

If your submission includes this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, November 2 at 9:00PM EST. Please note that due to your mod’s real-life commitments, this will be a two-week challenge!

Friends, it's time we spoke about Shiratori Sari. At last, you might all be saying right now!

lucky Sarii!

Here's the bad news: Sarii graduated in May, earlier this year. In the time we've taken to go through these Team AKB Oshi introductions, another member has sadly departed, and in Sarii's case, aged 16 and probably seriously thinking about her ambitions and her education, two years, two months, and fourteen days were enough for her to know that her future wasn't on the stage at Don Quijote in Akihabara. If I was being cruel, I might suggest that having not been featured in the senbatsu for a single, it's conceivable that Sarii's choice might be the right one, but we know that singles aren't the right way to measure a member's career and we also know that senbatsu in AKB is always so much more of a gamble than in the sister groups, something that rests on so many other factors.

During her time with AKB, Sarii was a member of the nineteenth generation, debuting in 2024 as the youngest member amongst her peers with a production of Tadaima Renaichuu and a schedule for livestreams. As an older member of the audience, I feel that livestreaming at 14-years-old is a big deal, but I know some of you have grown up with this sort of interaction being a natural part of your childhood, so I think this immediate reaction is either evidence of how out of touch I am or the fact that you don't realise the internet has made child actors of you all. Whatever the case, I'm assuming (hoping) girls like Sarii got the support they needed during these activities from both management and SHOWROOM, although it's worth noting that I feel there's more than one reason why SHOWROOM is locked outside of Japan unless you have a VPN and the fact that the platform is like this is an acknowledgement of how things could go wrong and the limits of the staff there and their capability for addressing such things.

Hopefully guiding Sarii along the way either way were the older members of her generation, Hanada Mei, Ito Momoka, Okumoto Kairi, and Kawamura Yui, and together they appeared on Yumemite Gomen, Koi Tsun Jatta B side. In fact, reading through Sarii's discography, it is almost a litany of B sides we have covered before—Kimi to Boku no Polestar, Sakura no Hanabiratachi 2025, Skipping Stone, Ishi no Taiboku, and, last by not least, Tan! Cy! Borg! Because of this, it's easy maybe to characterise Sarii as someone present to fill out the numbers, but to think of her in this way is to do her a disservice. Although she clearly wasn't top of the list, I think a longer run in the group would have definitely seen her begin to appear regularly in the senbatsu as it was only in 2025 that she was promoted to the regular members. It's a shame then that the demands of being an idol and progressing at school got the better of her as whilst leaving was obviously the best move for her personally, we never really got to see what Sarii could do as an idol if given a real chance. Perhaps later in her career, we might see her return as a member of a different group, as many others have before her, but I am sad that this moment passed us all by so quickly and never bore the fruit we all hoped for.

Shiratori Sari, born after Heavy Rotation had been released, AKB48 a part of her childhood, a girl whose most admired member were Miyawaki Sakura and Oguri Yui, girls who we saw grow up, has momentarily left behind her dreams of being an idol, but, despite this, I hope she doesn't forget the stage completely in what she does next.

Fannish Interests: I've been an anime/manga fan for 30+ years so I know and like a lot (a LOT) of series. I tend to obsess on sports series but I haven't found one I love much since Haikyuu!!. Currently I'm enjoying Boku no Hero Academia and playing Hades a lot.
I like to post about: I mostly post fanarts, fanfics, and recs :)
About Me/Other Info: I love to get art requests and do art trades. I tend to be a single-minded-OTP girl but will definitely post about lots of series. I used to be on LJ (same handle) and thrive to find the sense of community fandom we used to have over there 15-20 years ago.
