October is almost OctOVER.
Oct. 24th, 2026 03:47 pm++ I watched V/H/S/Mixtape, the newest installment of the V/H/S franchise that was recently released this month. Honestly, I'm unsure how to feel about it. Because while it wasn't the greatest installment, I don't think it was all that bad either, although I understand the mixed reactions to it. Ultimately, ( smallish spoilers ) I did like some of the segments (one that was like a more demented "Smile Time" from Angel, the sensory deprivation room, and the "Death Tone" segment were my favorites), but while I liked the narrative concept it wasn't overall cohesive enough throughout, editing wise, to stick the landing, in my opinion.
Nevertheless, V/H/S is a franchise is meant to be fun and entertaining with interesting concepts featuring short horror movies fitting a particular theme. Not all of them are going to be winners, but they all have at least a segment or two worthwhile to watch, and that's all I need. I'm curious about the installment that'll be released next year.
++ There's news that Halloweentown 5 is going to be in the works, and it makes me have a lot of mixed feelings of apprehension and hopefulness. Every single time they try to do another sequel after so many years from an original IP they tend to not really do well. However, considering how the franchise fell off with the atrocity of the fourth film, if done right they can redeem themselves especially if they bring back Kimberly J. Brown as Marnie, who they shamelessly replaced in that fourth film without her knowledge. That is, of course, if they truly want to do justice to the franchise, especially by honoring Debbie Reynolds' legacy in them, and not just be another pointless cash grab for nostalgia, which unfortunately so many of these sequels tend to be even with the original cast agreeing to be involved. I don't have much faith in Disney or anyone else in the industry right now. If this had happened over a decade ago, perhaps I would be a little more optimistic, but at this point I'm just very tired of seeing good potential go to waste.
With all that being said, my idea for this fifth sequel would be: ignore the fourth movie entirely, have Kimberly J. Brown return as Marnie (and the rest of the original cast as they can), Billie Lourd to play a young Aggie Cromwell, time travel being a factor (either Marnie time travels to the past or young Aggie travels to the future), either Daniel Kountz returns as Kal or plays an ancestor of Kalabar, which would make for a good continuation of Kalabar's Revenge. This is just my personal wish, it obviously will not happen this way but in my mind, as a fan, it would be a great way to bring everything back full circle.
