At The Nation, our work comes from people. AI can help with small tasks, but it does not create our journalism.
1. Human reporting comes first
Every story we publish grows out of real reporting. AI tools do not gather facts, run interviews, shape narratives, or write the news.
2. AI only plays a support role
We use AI for small, mechanical tasks such as:
grammar fixes
tightening language
polishing the flow
summaries of long documents
ideas for headlines
routine newsroom chores
These tools act like digital helpers. They do not steer the story, set the argument, or introduce facts.
3. AI does not write our journalism
We do not allow AI to:
write news or opinion pieces
create scenes, quotes, or description
add background that we have not verified
generate reports based on unconfirmed information
replace the judgment of our staff
All editorial choices rest with human editors.
4. Accuracy and accountability
Every reporter and editor is responsible for the accuracy of their work. If an AI tool was used for any part of the workflow, the team still checks every fact and makes sure nothing slipped in that should not be there.
5. Transparency
If an AI tool plays a noticeable role in non editorial elements such as graphics or routine summaries, we may say so when needed. The journalism itself remains created by people.
Our commitment
We use technology to make our work cleaner and stronger, not to replace the craft of journalism.
