Help with these characters?

Posted by frances_bea on 2012.01.10 at 15:41
The first character here is clearly 長/长, but I spent a bunch of time searching in Plecodict and couldn't find any character that looks like the second one. Ideas?

丽莎 and 莉萨

Posted by carmentalis on 2011.08.11 at 18:12
Is there a difference between the use of 丽莎 and  莉萨 where the name Lisa is concerned? The first is the one I know I learnt as the standard for Lisa years ago, and which my textbooks and dictionary confirm, but I've come across several cases of the second variation lately, and it's made me wonder. Is it just a matter of preference?

Register

Hello everybody!
I have a question about register in Chinese.

I have the feeling that the expression 奄奄一息 belongs to a formal register, but I have no proof of that. Can someone illuminate me, please?

I give you a little bit more context in case you needed it:

宋凡平奄奄一息了,这六个红袖章才发现自己饿了,他们暂时放过了宋凡平,向着苏妈的点心店走来。
Thanks a lot in advance!

Chinese First Name & Reference Materials Question

Hey, zhongwen !

I took Mandarin Chinese in college and in the second semester, my professor gave us each a Chinese surname (mine was 范 Fàn). I wanted to go a step further and get a first name as well, and I went to a naming website just for kicks (I know full well that's SO NOT a good idea, but I was really excited  ^_^;;;). The first name it generated for me was 安声(聲) ĀnShēng, and I fell in love with it at once. I've asked about it, but no one will give me a straight answer. So, now I ask you all: Is this a credible first name for me? I mean, I don't actually plan to use it for anything serious, but I'd love to have it, just for my own sake. But if its completely unrealistic or unsuitable as a name, I'd rather not become any more attached to it than I already am.

Also, would anyone know of a reliable reference book or website for Chinese naming? I draw and write a lot, and if I were to give one of my Chinese characters a Chinese name, I'd like it to be accurate.

Thanks, everyone!

mandarin for Windows 7

Hey, guys! Longtime lurker, first-time poster.

Does anyone here know how to install Mandarin on Windows 7? I've poked about a bit on my computer, but it isn't helping me in the slightest, and the Microsoft site isn't even listing Chinese as an installable language. But, for some odd reason, I can read Chinese characters on my screen just fine (that is, on websites and the like). I'd like to be able to type it, too - back when I was running XP, I could type out things in pinyin, then choose off a list of which character I meant.

So - does anyone know how to do this? I appreciate any help at all.

ETA Problem solved! Thanks for the fast response!

How to say "Excuse me" on the phone?

I was wondering if there is a polite and concise way to ask someone in Chinese to repeat himself while on the phone. Something akin to "Excuse me?" or "Sorry?". I always find myself saying either “什麼?” (which sounds rude) or something like “對不起,我沒聽清楚,可以再説一遍嗎?” (which is much too long and inconvenient).

Thanks in advance!

Chinese-Japanese question

Just something that I have noticed and that so far none of my Japanese Study friends could answer. Come on, let's show them Chinese Studies knows more :P

Take a look at the picture under the cut from Spirited Away (I have seen it in other anime, too).

What is the connection between oil 油 and bathhouse? Is it a homophone? An in-joke? A meaning changed over time? An abbreviation of 湢?

Does anyone know a good online list of the most common 500 or 1,000 words in Mandarin? Trying to do some intensive vocab practice, and want to focus it on stuff that's actually going to be used in day-to-day conversation.

Thanks!
