
AE1a [ArkEdgeSpace]
AE5Ra, AE5Rb, and AE5Rc are Japanese 6U CubeSats manufactured and operated by ArkEdge Space of Japan. The three spacecraft are based on the companys standardized 6U satellite bus and were launched in 2025 to demonstrate radio-frequency maritime observation and multi-satellite constellation operations.
The satellites form the AE5R mission series, which focuses on radio-frequency (RF) observation of maritime activity. By detecting and analyzing electromagnetic signals emitted by ships and other maritime sources, the satellites are intended to support maritime situational awareness and safety. The mission aims to demonstrate the ability to monitor vessel activity using RF signals and to improve information available for maritime operations. In addition, the satellites are used to test operational concepts relevant to future satellite constellations, including handover techniques between satellites to maintain continuous communication with ground stations as spacecraft pass in and out of view.
AE5Ra, AE5Rb, and AE5Rc were developed by ArkEdge Space using a standardized 6U CubeSat platform. The bus design enables simultaneous design, manufacturing, and testing of multiple satellites. The development approach was supported by programs of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) beginning in fiscal year 2021 and later by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) through a research program focused on micro-satellite multi-purpose bus technology and information infrastructure for the space industry. These programs aimed to establish standardized satellite platforms that enable efficient production and operation of small satellite constellations.
The spacecraft are 6U-class micro-satellites built on a modular architecture that allows mission payloads to be integrated onto a common bus. The design is intended to support applications such as environmental monitoring, disaster observation, maritime monitoring, and Internet-of-Things communications. The AE5R satellites carry RF observation payloads designed to capture and analyze signals related to maritime activity.
AE5Ra, AE5Rb, and AE5Rc were launched on 29 November 2025 aboard a Falcon-9 v1.2 (Block 5) rocket during the SpaceX Transporter-15 mission operated by SpaceX. The launch took place from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The satellites were deployed into low Earth orbit and initial communications were confirmed on the same day through ArkEdge Space ground stations, marking the beginning of the Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP). Over subsequent months the spacecraft undergo commissioning and performance verification.
