FrontierSat [CalgaryToSpace]

FrontierSat, also known as CTS-SAT 1 is a Canadian 3U Cubesat developed by the CalgaryToSpace student team at the University of Calgary as an atmospheric science and technology demonstration mission. The project was supported by the University of Calgary, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and the European Space Agency (ESA) through the Fly Your Satellite! program.

The primary scientific payload is the Mini Plasma Imager (MPI), a miniaturized version of the Thermal Ion Imager (TII) flown on ESA's Swarm satellites. The instrument is designed to investigate the Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement (STEVE) phenomenon, an aurora-like atmospheric event associated with fast plasma flows in the ionosphere. MPI functions as a charged-particle anemometer: an electrostatic analyzer separates incoming ions according to their energy-per-charge ratio, while an IonCCD detector measures the ion flux. The instrument produces 32 measurement frames per second, generating a raw telemetry stream of about 5.1 kB/s.

A second payload, the Deployable Composite Lattice Boom (DCLB), is a technology demonstration that evaluates the deployment of a lightweight composite boom in orbit. The deployment process is monitored by an onboard camera to assess the performance of the mechanism for future spacecraft applications.

FrontierSat was launched on 3 May 2026 aboard a Falcon 9 rocket as part of the CAS500-2 rideshare mission. Following deployment, the satellite successfully established communications and began transmitting beacon signals from orbit.
