HORN [BULL]

HORN (Hurtling ORbit Normalizer) is a pair of Japanese 6U CubeSats, HORN-L and HORN-R, developed by BULL to demonstrate a post-mission disposal (PMD) system that uses atmospheric drag to accelerate de-orbiting at the end of a satellite's operational life.

The two spacecraft will test BULL's PMD technology in orbit by deploying a drag-enhancing device that increases atmospheric resistance. This causes the satellites to lose altitude more rapidly after completing their missions, reducing the time they remain in orbit and helping to mitigate the growth of space debris. The passive system requires no propulsion, making it suitable for CubeSats and other small satellites.

HORN-L and HORN-R will evaluate the deployment mechanism and the effectiveness of the drag device under operational conditions. The demonstration is intended to validate a simple, lightweight, and low-cost end-of-life disposal solution that can help future satellite operators comply with post-mission disposal guidelines and promote the sustainable use of low Earth orbit.

HORN-L and -R have been launched on the maiden flight of the H-3-30S launch vehicle.
