The Dragset deposit is a small, greenstone-hosted, pyritic sulphide deposit located 8.5 km west of Løkken Verk. The deposit was probably discovered before 1700 and worked intermittently until 1909 (Borchgrevink 1954).
The Løkken Ophiolite is composed of a 1- to 2-km-thick section of pillow lavas, divided in upper, middle and lower volcanic members (Grenne 1989a). The upper member is essentially formed by basaltic pillow lavas and massive flows with intercalated pillow breccias. The middle member is characterised by thick basaltic and subordinate intermediate flows interlayered with jasper horizons. The lower volcanic member consists of basaltic pillow lavas, hyaloclastites and subordinate massive flows. This volcanic sequence overlays the plutonic complex composed of sheeted dyke and gabbro with co-magmatic plagiogranite.
The Dragset deposit is hosted in the lower volcanic member, while the Løkken deposit, located approximately 8 km to the east of Dragset, is hosted in the middle member. The E-W striking Dragset open pit is approximately 30 m wide and 70 m long and is rimmed by a large waste dump to the north. Several deformed massive sulphide bodies in tectonically disrupted positions along with variably altered greenstone and schistosed greenstone are visible in the walls of the open pit. Mining at Dragset occurred intermittently from before 1700 to 1909 and an estimated resource of 100,000 tonnes at 2 % Cu and 2.5 % Zn is reported.
Two major ore types were found in the mine: stockwork sulphides, which represent the stringer zone, in the eastern part of the pit, and massive sulphide bodies in the northern part of the pit.
