Köppen climate type:
An open pit sillimanite mine (35 meters deep) in the Wortel formation of the Bushmanland Group. Located 65 km west of Pofadder in the defunct district Bushmanland and 45 km north-west of the town Aggeneys. Hotson 42 farm is a portion of Wortel 42 farm. There are seven known quarries, of which five are on the Hotson farm.
The Wortel Formation consists of biotite-sillimanite schist and quartzite (Praekelt and Schoch, 1997). Amphibolite lenses occur sporadically in the Wortel Formation; these can also host the sillimanite. The latter occurs as pods and lenses in biotite-sillimanite schist ranging from a few meters to hundreds of meters in length along strike; the Hotson 6 mine exploited one of the larger lenses (Schoch et al., 1985). The sillimanite, sometimes together with corundum, has been known since the 1930s and was used for refractory purposes (Frick and Coetzee, 1974). Schoch et al. (1985) conclude that the hotsonite and associated sulfates formed by hydration and sulfidation of the sillimanite, with the sulfate derived from the oxidation of associated chalcopyrite and other sulfides (Cairncross, 2020).
