For Mindat purposes the Mount Margaret Goldfield extends from about 10 kilometres west of Laverton to the Leonora Shire border. It encompasses mines near the Old Laverton Road, and Leonora-Laverton Roads.

Mount Margaret itself is a geographic hill near the southern boundary of the goldfield with the Lake Cary salt-pan. It was named by John Forrest in 1869, after a woman he would later marry. There is also a Mount Margaret indigenous community near the hill.

Mines are not numerous, but are varied- all gold though. Prospector fields include Red Flag, Hawkes Nest and Koorong of scattered historic shafts hidden in the scrub. Mount Morgans was a major historic mining centre, which in later times was developed via several open pits and underground workings. The Westralia pit is by far the largest. Information signs and a historic building can be seen at Mount Morgans.

To the south near Lake Carey is the Mount Morven and Jupiter mines. The first is on indigenous land and is out of bounds. Jupiter is possibly active with exploration at the time of writing, with a new mine planned in the near future. The old pit walls are a sight to behold of red syenite, white albite and dark basalt, creating a crazy pavement pattern, with many faults and shears.
