Bou Azer Mine; Bouazzar Mine
Name(s) in local language(s):
Bou Azzer

See also Bou Azzer Mining District for references.

The mine is located in the Anti-Atlas in the province of Ouarzazate at an altitude of 1300 m to 1400 m above sea level, about 45 km (as the crow flies) south of the provincial capital Ouarzazate.

The mine is located close to the asphalted national road RR108, which connects the small towns of Taznakht in the west and Agdz in the east.

The Bou-Azzer mine is part of an extensive cobalt-nickel mining area, which extends over a length of 70–90 km from northwest to southeast. The deposit is located in the Precambrian basement with a siliceous-carbonate cover. There, the mineralization occurs in the contact area with serpentinites of the Bou-Azzer ophiolite.

Bou-Azzer is a well-known mineral locality where around 180 recognized mineral species as well as various varieties and mixed crystals such as biotite, gersdorffite and hibschite (as of 2023) have been discovered so far. Bou-Azzer is also considered the type locality (first locality) for four minerals, namely irthemite, nickel austinite and wendwilsonite, as well as bouazzerite, named after its type locality.

Since the inhabitants of the region used the distinctive violet cobalt arsenate erythrite as rat poison and insecticide, a targeted search for cobalt ore was carried out in Bou Azzer between 1928 and 1930. The mining district discovered was awarded to the Société minière de Bou-Azzer et de Guerara (SMAG). During the Second World War, mining activities had to be stopped between 1940 and 1943.

Today, the mine is operated as an underground mine by the Compagnie de Tifnout Tighanimine (CTT), a subsidiary of the raw materials group Managem.

In 1999, at the suggestion (1995) of his professor Jean-Claude Samama, El Houssaine Berdouzi wrote his doctoral thesis "Étude de la dispersion des polluants minéraux autour de la mine de Bou-Azzer" on the arsenic contamination of Wadi Alougoum by cobalt arsenide (modderite) mined in the earliest mine and in Precambrian sediments in the wadi. In 2013, the Moroccan newspaper Al Massa drew attention to this again. Celia Izoard recalled this in July 2023 as well as the dubious occupational safety of subcontractors and freedom of association.

In November 2023, the issue of arsenic contamination of the environment and people was taken up by numerous German media outlets, as BMW is supplied by Managem with the cobalt mined in the Bou Azzer mine. Experts suspect that the documented conditions in the mine could conflict with German supply chain law.

BMW commissioned an investigation and announced the following in May 2024: in the area around the mine, there were "sometimes high concentrations of arsenic in waste and water collection systems on the mine site itself and in the immediate vicinity." Those commissioned to carry out the investigation were unable to establish or rule out a connection to mining operations. Since the reporting began, the mine operator has implemented construction measures to prevent water and dust from the mine from entering the environment. For this purpose, new water basins have been built, and drainage ditches have been dug, among other things. The riverbed has been cleaned of sediment.

Geochronology

Mineralization age: Carboniferous : 315 Ma to 305 Ma

Important note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
