The out crop was discovered in 1893, 3 years after placer gold discovery in Keelung River. After arrival of Japanese, the mine was named Zuiho Gold Mine (Jui-Fang Gold Mine) and operated by Japanese until 1918. The successor owner was a Taiwanese entrepreneur named Yun-Nieng Yen who lease the mine to contracted miners, and its family continue to runs the mine until its closure in 1971. The mine was once a very important gold mine in Taiwan, and likely the very first gold outcrop mining site on the Island.

Jiufen Mine is a low - intermediate sulfidation gold mine, and has produced a range of epithermal ore vein type minerals very different to its neighbor Chinkuashih mine. The mine has been closed for more than 50 years now, specimens are rare today.

Jiufen is now as a famed tourist attraction gaining from its mining history and nice mountainous-coastal scenery.
