Skarn and stratabound gold-sulphur deposit.
The Tianmashan deposit is the largest active gold mine in the Tongguanshan field and the largest known independent gold deposit in the Tongling district, with reserves exceeding 60 tonnes of gold at an average grade of 6.39 g/t. Discovered between 1958 and 1961 and in operation since 1984, the mine is now approaching the end of its productive life.
The local stratigraphy ranges from the Devonian to the Quaternary, with a total thickness exceeding 2030 m. The main host rocks are the Carboniferous Huanglong and Chuanshan formations. The Huanglong Formation consists of massive limestone and saccharoidal marble, whereas the Chuanshan Formation is characterized by thick-bedded coral-bearing limestone. The main intrusion exposed in the Tianmashan area is the Tian’ebaodanshan stock, which mainly consists of quartz diorite porphyry and granodiorite porphyry. It has an irregular sub-circular outcrop with an exposed area of approximately 0.7–0.8 km2. Its contact zones generally dip inward, although in some areas the intrusion protrudes outward in a semi-funnel shape or extends into the Carboniferous strata as apophyses, which are strongly altered and difficult to recognize. In the Tianmashan deposit, the main intrusive rock is quartz diorite porphyry, which is genetically related to skarn alteration. The Tianmashan orebodies are mainly hosted within Carboniferous strata and extend for more than 1,700 m along a NE strike, generally dipping to the southeast. Two types of orebodies are recognized in the deposit: interlayer replacement-type orebodies and skarn-type orebodies. The interlayer replacement-type orebodies constitute the dominant mineralization style, with its orientation generally consistent with that of the host strata, indicating strong lithological control on ore deposition.
