The Shire of Esperance is 720 kilometres south-east of Perth, covers 44,336 km2.
The shire's western boundary is half way between Esperance and Hopetoun, its eastern boundary Isralite bay, and it stretches approximately 150 kilometres inland.
The town takes its named for a French exploration ship which called by in 1792. The area was first settled by Europeans in the 1870's, a telegraph station built in 1876, and a port developed for the booming goldfields inland in the 1890's. Agricultural land was opened up north of the town by an American syndicate in the 1960's.
In 1979, NASA's Skylab plummeted back to Earth over the town. The local council fined NASA $400 for littering. The fine was eventually paid by donations from American citizens.
Esperance has a very good regional museum, boat tours of the islands off-shore, and a pink lake. The coastline is incredible, with pure white beaches, aquamarine water and myriads of small islands off-shore. If it was 20 degrees warmer with palm trees, people would flock from all over the world to see it. There are several national parks along the coast containing rare flora, tame kangaroos, and more coastal scenery.
Mineral sands is mined in the shire. There are no specimen locations.
Regolith-hosted REE deposits are new to Australia, although the Newmont prospect in Western Australia was discovered in 2011. With the recent increasing demand for REEs, active exploration for the IAC-style (Ion-adsorption clay) deposits within Australia started three years ago with
a number of projects actively explored to date. Presently, the Esperance region in South-Western Australia is the largest exploration hub with active exploration over an area about 200 km long and 120 km wide. Cowalinya, Salazar, Splinter Rock and Circle Valley deposits have been established there with Mineral Resources ranging from 98 to 344 Mt of ore at 870–1308 ppm Total REE Oxide (TREO).

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Proterozoic : 2360 ± 96 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
