The Pallaflat Mining Co. was formed in 1874 and the No.1 shaft was working ten years later. 83,412 tons of iron ore were produced in 1888. Two other pits were developed before the closure of the mine in 1914.

The ore occurred as vein-like bodies on fault planes and as flats in the 1st, 2nd and 4th Limestones. A little manganese ore was also found.

The mine was well known for its exceptional calcite groups of clear, transparent nail-head and scalenohedral crystals with some 'Butterfly' twins. Some specimens displayed a 'selective' coating with hematite, colouring one side of the crystals red or brown. Baryte specimens were also produced here, with combinations of transparent pastel green crystals in association with calcite.

During the 1980s, the dumps were worked by a group of local collectors and many fine specimens were recovered.
