Granite-type uranium deposits in the eastern part the Guidong granitic pluton, a multi-period and multi-phase composite pluton consisting mainly of Indosinian and Yanshanian (Jurassic) granites. The ore field area is dominated by Yanshanian intrusions: Xiazhuang, an Early Jurassic peraluminous medium-grained two-mica granite (196 Ma) in the east; Luxi, a Middle Jurassic coarse-grained porphyritic biotite granite (185 Ma) in the southeast; and Aizi, a Late Jurassic medium-grained hornblende-biotite granite (157 Ma) in the west. Volcanism in the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous (143 Ma) produced granular and felsic porphyroclastic lavas and pyroclastic sediments. Later felsic intrusions (143-125 Ma) include small granite stocks and pegmatite and aplite dykes; the latter are ubiquitous in the area, but concentrate around late granite stocks. During the Late Cretaceous, the eastern granite segment (Xiazhuang) was uplifted and exposed to erosion before it subsided again. This block, which hosts the ore field, is limited to the north and south by two ENE-WSW trending, silicified fault zones. Litho-structural elements in the ore field include diabase dyke swarms, NNE-SSW, ESE-WNW and ENE-WSW trending silicified fracture zones, and two giant ENE-WSW trending quartz veins. Host rocks include various granites and intermediate to mafic dykes. Most of the ore bodies are blind, but some crop out at the surface.
The Xiazhuang uranium ore-field, contains an estimated 800 tonnes of U and is notable for its high ore grade (U = 0.5 %). Since its discovery in the 1950s, one large-scale uranium deposit (Zhushanxia), three medium-scale uranium deposits (Xiwang, Zhutongjian, and Xianshi), and several small-scale uranium deposits (e.g., Huziduishan) have been confirmed in the ore district. Based on the geological conditions conducive to uranium ore formation, deposits within the Xiazhuang uranium ore-field are classified into silicified vein-type, altered cataclastic rock-type, intersection-type, and exocontact-type.
The Xiazhuang ore field, situated in the eastern sector of the Guidong composite granite pluton, occupies the central-eastern segment of the Nanling E W trending tectonic-magmatic belt. Tectonically constrained by the intersection of the Dadongshan-Guidong E-W trending magmatic belt with the Huangpi Fault, Mashishan Fault, and Youshan-Xiazhuang Neocathaysian fault system, the ore field is enveloped by Sinian-Paleozoic country rocks. Since the Late Yanshanian period, the Xiazhuang district has experienced extensional rifting and differential uplift-subsidence movements, with regional-scale deep faults penetrating the upper mantle and extensive development of secondary fractures and subsidiary fissures. These structural features collectively establish the area as a favorable zone for mantle-derived fluid mineralization.
Twenty-two uranium deposits and numerous mineralized occurrences have been discovered in the Xiazhuang ore field. Most uranium orebodies occur within the Xiazhuang composite batholith, strictly controlled by fault structures, and are closely related to silicified hydrothermal alteration within the fault structural zones. Several deposits (occurrences), such as No.337, 338, and 330 etc., develop at the intersections of basic dikes and NNE-trending faults, forming the typical “intersection-type” uranium deposits in the Xiazhuang area. Recent exploration results show that small Pingtian deposits also occur within the NNE-trending fault zones near the contact zone between the batholith and Cambrian strata on the eastern edge of the batholith, generally referred to as “outer zone-type” uranium deposits, different from deposits produced inside the granite batholith, the so-called “inner zone-type” uranium deposits.
