The most productive mine in the orefield under the Beaumonts and subsequently the Weardale Lead Co., who started working the mine in the 1940's for fluorspar.
The British Steel Corporation began the re-opening of the mine in 1969-70, under the name Beaumont Mine. Unfortunately, the hoped-for reserves of fluorspar were not found and by 1983, with all the equipment still intact, pumping had ceased and the mine was at a standstill.

While the mine failed to produce the anticipated commercial product, some important specimen finds occurred during the British Steel operation. Most notable were the pale lavender, twinned fluorites associated with sphalerite and siderite found circa 1970 in the remnants of flats along the Diana Vein.
