North Dakota is a state in the north-central United States, covering approximately 183,100 km². It is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the north, Minnesota to the east, South Dakota to the south, and Montana to the west. The state is largely rural, with a low population density, and its largest city is Fargo, while Bismarck serves as the state capital.
Geographically, North Dakota lies within the Great Plains, characterised by broad, gently rolling plains, shallow river valleys, and subtle topographic relief. The eastern part of the state includes the extremely flat Red River Valley, the former bed of glacial Lake Agassiz, while the western part rises into the Missouri Plateau, marked by higher elevations, buttes, and badlands. Major rivers include the Missouri River, which flows southward through the state, and the Red River of the North, which drains northward into Canada.
Geologically, North Dakota is underlain almost entirely by sedimentary rocks of Palaeozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic age, with no exposed crystalline basement. Bedrock units include Cretaceous shales and sandstones, Palaeogene sedimentary formations, and thick sequences of Quaternary glacial deposits. The western part of the state is underlain by the Williston Basin, a large intracratonic sedimentary basin that contains thick accumulations of oil- and gas-bearing strata. Eastern North Dakota is dominated by glacial sediments associated with repeated Pleistocene glaciations.
North Dakota’s mineral and extractive heritage is dominated by energy resources rather than metallic mining. The state is one of the USA’s leading producers of oil, primarily from the Bakken Formation in the Williston Basin, and also produces natural gas. Lignite (brown coal) has been extensively mined, mainly in western and central North Dakota, and is used primarily for electricity generation. Other extractive activities include sand and gravel production, particularly from glacial and river deposits, as well as limited clay extraction for brickmaking. Metallic mineral resources are absent.
Administratively, North Dakota is divided into 53 counties. The state’s geology, shaped by long-term sedimentation, glaciation, and basin development, has strongly influenced its agricultural economy, energy production, and settlement patterns. North Dakota is a key region for understanding continental sedimentary basin evolution, glacial geomorphology, and modern hydrocarbon systems in the interior of North America.
