Saukopf, Untersulzbachtal, Hohe Tauern, Salzburg, Österreich

The Saukopf is a sheer rock situated in the upper part of the Untersulzbachtal at the end of the Ascham Alm. This part of the valley belongs to the inner resp. core zone of the National Park Hohe Tauern.

On the middle of the picture you see a round black rock which is named Saukopf (sow head) possibly according to the shape. Below the Saukopf there are some debris chutes which bring down some material from the high walls of the valley.

However, this location is now extinguished. At the end of the 19th this area became a total nature and wild game reservation. Today entering for hikers and mineral collectors is totally forbidden. This will be supervised by rangers which have their observation point on the Ascham Alm which is below of the Saukopf. Besides this restriction finding of minerals there is nearly impossible because the whole area is now totally overgrown by black alders (Alnus glutinesa) and butterbur.

Since about 2005 especially the mineral collecting is forbidden also on the Ascham Alm which is announced by warning boards besides the trail.
